Where will we finish?

I'm happy looking at that league table since January that somebody helpfully put together
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind

Aye sure. I don't think anyone's ever said the defence is perfect no further required. It was arguments over priorities and more immediate needs.
I'm happy with my conclusion that we'd be worse off if we'd signed two centre backs but kept playing Johnstone in midfield

Yup. The defending was a symptom of a lack of options elsewhere in the squad, not the personnel at the back.Prufrock wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 3:25 pmAye sure. I don't think anyone's ever said the defence is perfect no further required. It was arguments over priorities and more immediate needs.

We went down the Tuchel route, which was the easiest tactical solve. Switched to a back three for the extra man and forced runners wide to let us get bodies back when countered.
We fixed the bits of the squad that could have got us relegated if left alone and hopefully we can now improve the defence to the point where we're a genuinely top side.
If we want to play a back four and approach games more like Liverpool (as Evatt has said) then we definitely need to switch things up a bit at the back - in addition to clearly needing bodies in. We also probably need another option to cover in midfield if we want to play a four, but we'll see what we do.

The graph’s not the easiest to read but basically it’s been a nuts season in terms of points required to make the playoffs.

Evatt, apparently.
"73 points, that was the target and we got it."
The stuff that comes out of his mouth.

Of course it was, Ian.

My wife was wondering what I was watching after he said that and I shouted, "feck off, you daft bastard!" with a massive smile on my face.
Re: Where will we finish?
Nope. I had us 8th
But I did forecast 73 points

I went wild for 6th but thought 78 points would be enough

Re: Where will we finish?
I genuinely thought we'd make the play-offs, but the tops sides just kicked on and the gap was way too big.
We're genuinely a decent side now, though. Light years on from what we were before January.
We're one of the sides best place to go up next season. However, there's loads to do in the market and on the training pitch before then.

At least he didn't say of Dion's second goal "we've put a lot of time in, on the training pitch, so it came as no surprise to me"GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 8:51 pmEvatt, apparently.

Sir need only look at my "fill the missing games in" tables, to see us in 9th, twice.

I'm sure the current side would be in the promotion places next season if we keep them all. But can we retain key players or replace them with equal quality?GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 10:15 pm

I have my doubts that this current squad, given a free run, gets promoted next season.Montreal Wanderer wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 4:07 amI'm sure the current side would be in the promotion places next season if we keep them all. But can we retain key players or replace them with equal quality?
It's probably more of a thread topic than a reply, but I think we're currently short on both quality and depth.

Re: Where will we finish?
He did an interview a few games back saying we wanted to win every game and end on the max we could which was 73 points. In fairness I think that’s all he’s referring to here.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 8:51 pmEvatt, apparently.

I would agree with this. Our points return since the turn of the year would have us finishing third, certainly very impressive but in matches against the very best it felt to me that we were just short of the standard required.

Hence the semi-joking Pessimists topic I posted. If you stand still you go backwards, as the cliche has it.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 9:11 amI would agree with this. We need to add better players in this summer window than we currently have at the club. I have no worries about the coaching or the approach. We just need more of the best players in the league to be Bolton players.

Re: Where will we finish?
The play-offs are upon us - Wycombe-McDons in the Culture Clash tonight, Sunderland-Wednesday in the Hubris Face-Off tomorrow (return legs Sun & Mon).
Who do you think will win?
Purely for you, who do you want to win?
Who do you want to win to get out of our way for next year?
For me, that's
(1) Wednesday - they seem to have the spirit
(2) McDons - I don't like the club but I like the football and I dislike the others too
(3) Wednesday - I think they would be the strongest of the four next season
