Had my one and only taste of Greenall Whitley bitter in there. I'm glad that Greenall Whitley Land doesn't exist. Bloody hideous stuff.TANGODANCER wrote:I'll throw a mention in for the Lower Nag's Head as the best Friday night pub in Bolton. Twas a long time ago mind.

Good shout on Starkie Arms. Went in there once and found it to be dog rough. What was the name of the one in town centre on the corner near the old DHSS building, couple of doors up from Washingtons Hair dressers? Went in there as a young lad and got chatted up by quite an aggressive bird - weren't sure if she were trying to seduce me or rob me

It was just up from the Art College on thew same side. Demolished in 84? That makes me 17 on the night it all kicked off. Actually, that makes more sense (in a certain sort of way) tooTANGODANCER wrote:The New Zealand Chief was on Great Moor Street. Going back some, but can somebody remind me what the piano-bar place opposite the Nevada was called? Never can remember.

Do you remember the original Nag's Head, Tango? Which must have been next door to Burton's, I think.TANGODANCER wrote:I'll throw a mention in for the Lower Nag's Head as the best Friday night pub in Bolton. Twas a long time ago mind.
The Lower Nag's Head was renowned for letting underage drinkers in whilst I was at school. It was the first town centre pub that I went in, aged 15.

Just remembered another Breightmet pub. The Mosley Arms on Red Lane. Somehow found myself in there one night at the age of 18-19. Can't for the life of me think why i'd have been there.

Yep, that's the one I meant. Cheers. Bolton went a bit upmarket on names around then with Monteray's and Taskers etc.Burnden Paddock wrote:Think it's been a few things over the years, but the name I know it by is Hawthorns.TANGODANCER wrote:Going back some, but can somebody remind me what the piano-bar place opposite the Navada was called? Tis the one I mean Bruce, downstairs between Burtons and Marks and Spencers. A fine venue to quaff a pint before going to drink that awful Double Diamond and Watneys Red Barrel at The Empress round the corner.Bruce Rioja wrote:Do you remember the original Nag's Head, Tango? Re: Pubs of Bolton
Not in Bolton, but I would recommend The Winston in Salford near the Shopping City for an 'experience'. I know a few of the local people from around there and they all call it 'The Fraggle Rock' and avoid it like the plague. This was a few years ago but I am guessing it hasn't changed. Unfortunately, I was on my way home from Manchester after a good many ales and the bus broke down nearby and my bladder would not last until the next bus came. So I went into The Winston for a pee and a pint as you do. What a truly frightening experience! I not only got called various names which refer to a member of the police force, but also 'nonce' and many other choice phrases to that effect. Very loud buying and selling of drugs and sportswear I presume to be stolen was in full flow. When I ordered a bottle of Holt's ale, the barmaid threw it at me with the lid still on. When I asked if she would be so kind as to open it for me, she tutted, opened it and slammed it down on the bar so hard that about half of it shot out of the bottle not disimilar to the champers at the end of a Formula One race. When I drank the remainder of my ale in record time I quickly left. As I was walking towards the bus stop, I turned around and realised that several of the guys in the pub were walking along behind me. Thankfully my bus was waiting and I jumped straight on. I will never know whether they were just walking somewhere purely coincedentally at the same time I left or whether I was in trouble, but I have vowed never to return to The Winston again!

Funnily enough, it wasn't too long after the infamous goings on at the Brass Handles. But you know what its like when you have been on the sauce and need a tinkle!

Oh I do.
For those not familiar with said goings-on at the Brass Handles here's a link. And folk think The Rocket's less than desirable. Sheesh.

I was working in the area at the time of the above incident and was told that when the cops arrived, the first thing they saw was a little girl aged about 7 kicking one of the failed assassins in the head whilst calling him a C***. Classy.
Uma mesa para um, faz favor. Obrigado.
Re: Pubs of Bolton
And they say Salford has gone up market wonder whether the BBC crew would have a change of opinion on Salford if they dropped into one of those two pus given in mind they only see the quays and even that's with a police escort.
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.
