TD simply said it would be ridiculous. It is, but that won't stop whatever happens from happening will it?BWFC_Insane wrote: I think everyone is agreed we won't get near 5M for him, apart from TD of course!

Tango - do you honestly believe it'd be ridiculous, for a club that's just announced its debt level as being something in the order of £90M, to accept a bid of £5M for a player that can walk away for nothing shortly after?TANGODANCER wrote:TD simply said it would be ridiculous. Re: Nixon Latest on Elmander
My first post said, quote: £5m for an in form striker is a bit of a joke. I didn't say we wouldn't take it, because we would, we'd have to. I know he'll go for nothing when his contracts up. I accept this will happen unless he re-signs. It's the situation that's ridiculous, one of our prime assets can walk away for nothing at a time when he's just hitting form and after paying 13m for him. That's what's ridiculous.Bruce Rioja wrote:Tango - do you honestly believe it'd be ridiculous, for a club that's just announced its debt level as being something in the order of £90M, to accept a bid of £5M for a player that can walk away for nothing shortly after?TANGODANCER wrote:TD simply said it would be ridiculous. Now then, back to the top. £5m for an in-form striker is a bit of joke. What will it buy us as a replacement? The statement won't change a thing, but it's still a joke. It's football today, I can't deny it or change it. I don't have to think it's right. What more enlightenment is need for an opinion?

Well you do, because it is. The Bosman ruling says so.TANGODANCER wrote: I don't have to think it's right.

Re: Nixon Latest on Elmander
It might be frustrating - but it is clearly not ridiculous. Players sign contracts - so do clubs. When that contract has run its course - the club has no claim on that player and the player has no claim on the club. We signed him for three years - that was the deal - no more, no less. At the end of the season the deal is up - what we signed up for.TANGODANCER wrote: My first post said, quote: £5m for an in form striker is a bit of a joke. what is ridiculous about that? There is nothing at all about the situation that is ridiculous.
what would be ridiculous would be for a club to shell out whatever you imagine Elmo is worth - £15million??? - when a few months later they could have him for free... (fee wise)
if Bolton did that - I imagine you would describe it (wisely) as lunacy - I certainly would.
You don't think it's right - I get that - the question is, though - what would be right? Would it be right for us now to "own" Elmo in perpetuity until we decide to sack him or sell him?

The Bosman ruling is a bugger and does little to help the 'owning' club. It is, however, the very same ruling which got us Stelios for free and, I'm guessing, Holden and a good few others.
We are an established Prem. club and we are now able to rob a few clubs of their better players. We'll reeturn from our theiving raids to find that while we are out someone nicked ours.
I don't like it, but there you go.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Bit of witchunt going on here, it seems with Tango. I totally understand where he's coming from. It's shite that he's potentially leaving us for a relative pittance after the season he's had so far.
I'm sure TD is just aggrieved that after 2 years of paying shitloads in wages and transfer fee, for next to nothing goalswise, we now risk losing him because he may think the grass is greener somewhere else.
It's up to him, the offer from us is there and I'm sure an improved one will be too. Let's see if he wants to give us something back.

Yeah, I don't think Tango's point of view is unreasonable either. It's undoubtedly a very frustrating situation that we've found ourselves in.

Better that he goes for 5 million than leaving a contract unsigned and playing out next spring with his mind on his next club. 5 mil would be good value in terms of a fee for a player 6 months away from a free.Mind you there's also the question of what wage his agent tries to haggle for given the circumstances.
Hope he stays but if he doesn't get what we can and move on.

One thing I don't fear is that Elmo will stop caring if he elects to wind down his contract. He isn't a total arse and he knows he owes the fans and manager. And what sort of striker wouldn't be making a maximum effort to score at every opportunity?

True but it would be a distraction and should he hit a lean spell there will be plenty willing to put 2 and 2 together and make 22Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:One thing I don't fear is that Elmo will stop caring if he elects to wind down his contract. The thing is though, Tom, it's not like the Bosman ruling was introduced midway through Elmo's contract, is it?Tombwfc wrote:Yeah, I don't think Tango's point of view is unreasonable either. It's undoubtedly a very frustrating situation that we've found ourselves in.
It is what it is and the club were very aware of it in the first place. I really cannot see why anyone would get upset about it now.
