It's an interesting question. I haven't noticed the difference but they moved from Nigeria to Newcastle when Shola was five; Sammy was born five years after that. So Shola will have been learning English 'on the hoof' in the playground, whereas because the Ameobis apparently made a determined effort at home to only speak English (for better integration), Sammi would have been brought up in a house where everyone was speaking, perhaps, "textbook" English - I dunno, maybe from a course of tapes or something. His secondary school wasn't posh - local comprehensive, non-selective, merged and rebuilt just as he got there, and more recently judged inadequate and turned into an Academy.
Murphy is yet to impress me but as I say, clean slate. I'd add Hobbs to your defensive list: he's been training with us and I can't imagine a million other options for him or us. Brockbank too: he might start at right-back with older lads in the middle as he learns his trade.Prufrock wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:02 pmat this stage I'd happily keep them all. Magennis even more so than Oz. But they're both top 6 players at this level. Add Murphy, Lowe, the keepers and say Wheater and Taylor and you've got the bones of a team. I think we'll probably go down but I don't think it's a racing certainty.

Hmm, not sure. "lined up by" but non-compulsory, he's just making calls and suggesting people. And for all his drawbacks, Parkinson does seem to have contacts in the game and a good grasp of lower-league players. A lot of people seem to want to play for him. Wheater's almost apologetically hanging around.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:15 pmI don't think any manager is hiring players. They've been lined up by Cousins. And its very much "take what we can get".LeverEnd wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:09 pmAgreed. And the longer this has gone on the happier I am that Parkinson is still there. I was all for the fresh start, but given the mess were in, appointing a new manager right now is a non starter. Attractive football is very low down the list of priorities. Let him.hire some big donkeys to practice set pieces with and you never know.

There are many parts of Nigeria where English is the native language, but, a bit like Australia and the Appalachians, mainly incomprehensible to outsiders, unless, like in Appalachia and Australia, your family are rich and you speak merchant English.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:26 pmIt's an interesting question. Indeed: that's the hangover of empire (well one of them). Apparently the young Ameobis lost their ability to speak Yoruba because they focused on English.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:48 pmThere are many parts of Nigeria where English is the native language, but, a bit like Australia and the Appalachians, mainly incomprehensible to outsiders, unless, like in Appalachia and Australia, your family are rich and you speak merchant English.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:26 pmIt's an interesting question. There'll be an element of beggars can't be choosers I'm sure, but they'd be daft not to closely consult a manager who's been there 3 years and knows the division very well.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:15 pmI don't think any manager is hiring players. I still want to know why Sammy doesn't have an accent but Shola does. Did Shola's early Newcastle wages go on sending Sammy to some sort of Geordie posh school? That's what Nixon and Iles should be focusing on.
I also agree that at this stage I'd happily keep them all. Magennis even more so than Oz. But they're both top 6 players at this level. Plus, as DSb says, players are sticking around to train with him.

I'm sure Parky is in the discussions but I don't think he's central to the process. Cousins worked for the admins to ensure the football club could carry on if/once a takeover was done. The premise was that we'd need players regardless (Aldridge did the same job on the commercial side of the club) but that new owners might want to make a decision on the coaching staff.......LeverEnd wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 3:43 pmThere'll be an element of beggars can't be choosers I'm sure, but they'd be daft not to closely consult a manager who's been there 3 years and knows the division very well.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 12:15 pmI don't think any manager is hiring players. If the club had been able to continue normally (had enough cash reserves) in effect Cousins and Aldridge would have been running it on behalf of administrators.
Re: Onwards and Downwards: 2020 transfer speculation thread.
Doesn't bode well for him if he's not consulted I guess.

I wouldn't read an enormous amount into it, LE. The administrators appointed Cousins but they won't appoint a manager. That's for FV to decide. Had the administrators decided to let Parky line up signings, we might quite rightly accuse them of overstepping their mark.
But in truth, I wouldn't be amazed if Cousins had spoken to Parky. As much as anything, there's no point them both "chasing" the same players.

I reckon we might sign someone tomorrow!
Wheater wasted at Oldham IMO. Could have done a year here. We must be signing better.

Probably a daft question, but will paying the players back wages (presumably as a lump sum) affect the taxes they pay as opposed to seperate cheques (whatever) and could it possaibly cause further ado?

They will backdate the pay so it doesn’t. They’ve missed one from last tax year haven’t they?

Clocks ticking, I’m assuming players need to be registered by 12pm, whether new or existing / youth team?

Seems there is a lot to do in the next 37 minutes, unless it's done and they are working on the last one.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2019 11:17 amClocks ticking, I’m assuming players need to be registered by 12pm, whether new or existing / youth team?

The EFL reckoned most of the paperwork was already ready for processing / being processed (without necessarily "executing") from what the new woman said the other night IIRC?DJBlu wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2019 11:23 amSeems there is a lot to do in the next 37 minutes, unless it's done and they are working on the last one.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2019 11:17 amClocks ticking, I’m assuming players need to be registered by 12pm, whether new or existing / youth team?

Just feel we're the next in line to be duped by Mr Appleton. Seems he's fed a line to somebody and it's gone viral.
I so want to be wrong.

Nixon insists Josh Earl (loaned from Preston) and James Weir (ex-MU) are on the coach. So, who’d know them if they were sat next to them? Any good? What positions?
