I thought it appropriate to start a thread on this game after the sad events of the past few days.

I think it is only fitting that the Reebok is FILLED to the rafters for this game in memory of the great man and I hope any fan who can attend does so to pay respects.

Sometimes football is about more than a game, a result a performance, because for me quite frankly come Monday all that is irrelevant. This game is not about the current team or current players but about remembering someone who, whilst most of us did not see him play or know him, still leaves sadness in our hearts.

But it is important that the crowd celebrate him for what he was on Monday.

And having done a little reading, how ironic that the game is against Chelsea who according to wikipedia, Nat made his league debut for Bolton against.

It's my 50th birthday on monday. I'm not supposed to know about a party on saturday, or the expensive meal my wife has booked on mon night. Won't even be able to watch it on telly, be a sky+ job. It would be nice to win it for Nat; it would be alltogether more important to win it due to our increasingly precarious position. And it would be a nice prezzie for me too!

I think Chelsea is acknoweldged as his "league debut". Which is somewhat ironic in my opinion.

I think Bury was his pre-war debut according to most sources.

Will there be a minutes silence or a minutes applause as is the modern trend? Whilst I acknowledge the feeling and reason behind a minutes applause, I still don't think it reaches the poignancy of 20,000 people stood in silence to remember a special person or sad event. Just my feeling on it.

I always consider the traditional silence much more of a show of respect than the applause. The applause thing to me, smacks of Americanism; whoop whoop and all that. Hey! give it up for Randy, he's had a haircut! Feck off. If I want to remember someone, I like to do it quietly.

As far as I am concerned it depends on the situation. I could easily see a minute applause being very respectful of Sir Nat. He lived a good long life, and a minutes applause celebrates that fact. If someone dies prematurely or tragically then a moments silence is certainly more respectful and appropriate. I feel that for Sir Nat we should be celebrating the joy he brought to the Bolton Wanderers and the town of Bolton as he gave us many great moments of happiness over the course of his life.

I also understand that most of you will disagree with me, but to each his own.

in many cases the applause is to hide the fact that there is (usually) an element in the crowd that will not observe a minutes silence and organisers get scared of the boo boys ruining the moment. However, in this case I think it may be observed (certainly by all home fans), hopefulyl by away fans too.

Due to Nats passing away in his advanced years and as a celebration of his life, achievements and legendary status as a footballer for both club and country, then applause would be a fitting tribute.
