Ignoring the too-easy response of, "sometimes"...

You didn't say they were scrotes and villains because they were committing a crime. You seemed surprised that their relatives might see the good in them.

He might have been surprised. Me, that's my contention, friends and family don't see the bad. If there's little bad to be seen, no argument. When the rest of society see bad, that's where I came in...

The people who are not friends and family of the subject, but who are members of a community.
For example subject A. Let's say he's a gang member and lives in, uhmm Salford say, and he puts himself up for Mayor of Salford.
His family are self evident (although a little more complex than in my parent's day).
His friends are the people who are his friends.
Someone who is neither of the above but who lives in Salford is part of the rest of society.
Ulus Cingar who lives in the Khingan mountains of Outer Mongolia, although neither friend or family of the potential mayor, because he has no community ties to Salford whatsoever would not be counted amongst 'the rest of society'.
I hope that answers the question.

Living in Salford, where we've had said gang member running for President, who constituted "the rest of society" would all depend on who was asking the question... ;-)

You mean, who was asking the 'hypothetical' question. I wouldn't be daft enough to go to Salford and ask questions... :D

Do we know Ulus Cingar has no community ties to Salford whatsoever, or are we just making an assumption?

Oh and would his opinion be any less valid than say anyone else that knew nothing of subject A, the circumstances surrounding his standing for the office of Mayor of Salford, or the merit of his candidacy? Regardless of which postcode they resided in.

How do we know subject A is a gang member?

I know Ulus has no community ties to Salford. He speaky no English.
As for subject A his very candidacy as mayor relies on his enthusiastic espousal of his ability to 'knock heads together' and 'get things done'. These euphemisms are interpreted in widely different manner by friends and family, and 'the rest of the community' (which poor Ulus doesn't belong to, sadly).

Safe to assume then that if he, Ulus, reads shall we say, the Mongolian language edition of the Mail Online (Salford Edition), his opinion would be as well informed as most that get to judge subject A?

Correct.
One has to remember though that actual judgement, as opposed to subjective opinions, are carried out by courts of law.
(sorry internet spasm)
Many opinions are formed from circumstantial evidence. The reading of a newspaper article that reports a judgement from a court of law for example. Society tends to corral opinions into black and white. A similar process to how families (and friends) form opinions. A kind of "you're with us or agin us" thing.
Most people only make that choice if there is a reason too, like either being a friend, family member, or part of society that is affected by the actions and character of Subject A.
Ulus, although armed with the tools, does not have the necessary 'emotional' qualifications to make that judgement as he is isolated and therefore not swayed by the majority, whichever side of the fence he should happen to fall on.

I've often felt that true of many Salford residents, especially after they've had a few.

There are no doubt a good few Salford residents that speaky no English, yet would be perfectly within their right to cast a vote either for, or agin, the fellow know as subject A.

Well, today I'm angry about what seems to be the far more prevalent use of advertising slogans that seem like an outright assault on grammar. I mean Apple had 'Think Different', Subway 'Eat Fresh' but they're all over the place now.

'Be More Dog', 'Find Your Happy', 'Arrive Awesome', 'I am train'. There's loads more I'm sure.

Is it one person who comes up with all of these or is it just the way trends go in advertising? Whimsical acoustic covers of well known pop songs and rip offs of viral videos are the other two.
