Re: The athletics/running thread
I'm over in Donegal at the minute seeing friends and taking part in the annual Ballyliffin Coastal Challenge. It's a 10 mile road race set on the coast with lots of hills and a 2 mile finish on a golden sandy beach. Except this year large areas of the sand had been washed away and replaced by large pebbles and shingle which, after running 8 challenging miles was absolute hell on the knees, quads and calfs.
I was absolutely delighted though to have finished seconds over 1hr 20 minutes. The next few days are devoted to beer and the pursuit of oblivion........

I love running but agree. I rarely watch it.Prufrock wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Stunning. Are you watching Cardiff, Pru? Kenyans, Eritreans, Ethiopians running in the worst possible conditions and ripping it. Mo Farah third and sets a European record. Kamworor, the winner, actually fell at the start line and has ran with bleeding knees.Prufrock wrote:Proper runners are frightening. LE posted this in 2014 and it's stuck with me:I'm 27, play football twice a week, usually get out for a run once more, the gym at least once, and have always been relatively fit, especially now I've pretty much quit smoking. My fastest spilt time when I'm doing a 5k is usually about 6:30 so I reckon even with all the training in the world I'd be hard pushed to get near a 5 min mile. He did 26 of the feck. In a row.LeverEnd wrote:Dennis Kimetto just broke the world marathon record in Berlin with a time of 2:02:57.
Absolutely stupendous, that works out at 26 consecutive 4:41 miles, or 42 x 2:54 kilometres.
I'm not. To my shame, whilst if I find knowledge of these incredible feats fascinating and literally awesome, I find watching them actually do itinterminably dull!
I meant to watch the half as my old Birmingham Uni teammate Rachel was running, first GB vest at 36 after having kids, delighted for her. But forgot it was on. Whoops.

Oh yes and as for my own running, managed to keep up the progress with 18:57 ast Woodhouse Moor parkrun yesterday, then got headbutted in the knee by a fecking dog running round Rivington this afternoon and now it's swollen and sore. feck's sake!

If I took that feck* to a vet it would be a one way trip the way my knee feels this morning. It came barrelling across from the other side of the path and charged into me hitting the outside of my left knee with all my weight planted on it pushing it inwards. Didn't bark or try to bite. Usually they jump and just want to play but this was an odd one. Owners were dicks and showed very little concern. Presumably I led it on by running in shorts!!

Oh eck! I was only thinking how good (& odd) it was for those of us who post on this thread to be all fit and running at the same time. On behalf of all dog owners LE - sorry
hope it soon rights itself

Haven't ran in 3 weeks, Harry. Just can't shift this bastard of a cold. Has there ever actually been a time when we've all been fit at the same time?Harry Genshaw wrote:Oh eck! Ha! I often stop to say hello to a friendly dog but this one was weird. I think it may have been gene-spliced with a bull. It wasn't a bulldog however, but one of those squat ugly terrier type things. I'll go and see my cousin's new beagle puppy in Harrogate to restore my faith.Harry Genshaw wrote:Oh eck! Caught the end of the Pike race Saturday, did you not fancy it? Or were you on some ultra odyssey?
I've still not done a fell race, but am thinking about a MT race in Holmfirth in a few weeks with plenty of climbing. Work my way up to it.

I just need a few days off, just bruising on a delicate part of the knee I think. I'll be around at least for breakfast next weekend anyway.

Sorry to hearvabout you injury LE.
Loose Dogs can be a real hazard.
Sacked off a 5km race this morning as I am, frankly, still pissed from last night. Went to an '80s disco at the local hotel which didn't start until 10.00pm. Got home at 4.00am
Donegal rocks.

As far as stupid injuries go, that is right up there with jarring my back getting off the stepladder, whilst decorating!!LeverEnd wrote:Very good. You and all? I've had what I imagine to be the same f*cker 10 days and no sign of shifting it.Bruce Rioja wrote:Haven't ran in 3 weeks, Harry. Just can't shift this bastard of a cold. Aye, got off of a plane with that whole stinging sinus business going on and thought - here we go. Thing is, every morning I wake up thinking 'yeay, it's gone, I'll go for a run' only to get up and realise that the fecking thing's far from gone!Prufrock wrote:You and all? Wish I had. Was supposed to be walking the first 2 of the 3 peaks but for one reason and another it never happened. If you're home this week you not fancy Curlys 5k series which starts on Wednesday? It's on the trails round there but I don't know the exact route. Bruce, BP ?LeverEnd wrote:
