Re: Looking back to go forward.
That was a great read HG and brought back a lot of memories, thanks. Very well written too.
If that was all written from memory, then i'll be even more impressed!

nice one, Harry - the fall-from-grace the the front page has had over the last couple of years has been a loss to the forum - good stuff like yours and DSBs might help revive it!

throwawayboltonian wrote:Good read. nice job HG. The period you're discussing was before my time, being born in the late 80s, but it's one I've read about before in a book about BWFC's history that I received as a present. Completely agree though, I think it'll be at least a decade before we're thinking about top flight football again, and honestly I fear that we might fall further before then.
bloody norah - way to make people feel their age!

Cheers chaps, don't think DSB needs to clear his desk just yet but I enjoyed doing it
. I was only a young chap myself then but funny how much more important it all seemed then

Really good piece, mate. Thanks for that. More than enough room at the writer's table. More please!
The season in question was just before my time – born on Cup Final day '74, I was barely 8 when it started – but my dad and sister had been Burnden regulars through the '70s, and I was starting to like football (España 82 etc), so I took notice of a few things.
Was that away win – and bear in mind here that you might have to explain the phrase "away win" for the younger viewers - at Oldham the one that inspired the local newspaper headline "Royle blasts Doyle"? That piqued my nascent interest in wordplay...
I also recall, as relegation was confirmed by the Grandstand vidiprinter, proudly saying to the old fella "Oh, so we'll have to start in the FA Cup First Round next year" - he didn't seem very happy to hear this thing I'd learned, thus giving me an early example of the difference between knowledge and wisdom...

It was! Doyle clashed with Roger Wylde, I think, and they both squared up to each other with Doyle falling pretty theatrically to the ground clutching his face. Nobody in the ground bought it buf the ref didDave Sutton's barnet wrote:

I was at that 5-0 defeat at Carlisle. Tuesday night game. Must have been the Easter holidays for me & my dad (a teacher) to have trekked up there on a school night.

Bad memories, but a good read, thanks HG!
I'd forgotten that we got Whatmore back (and another couple of times after this)...One more win would've sent Grimsby down on GD.

Re: Looking back to go forward.
I missed this.good read HG.
Just realised the keegan game you refer to is the first I remember. I went with my grandfather aged 6 and sat in the Burnden Stand next to an elderly Geordie (probably my age now!). I remember being in terms ground younger but not details.
