It's not that simple here Monty. They are considering routine flexi- sigmoidoscopy as a proactive check at 55 but it hasn't been rolled out yet. You can't just request a test here. Hmmm scan or camera up the jacksy?? I'll take the scan thanks!

Ouch!

Blood tests can indicate susceptibility of cancer.

Late diagnoses of cancer is not always quickly terminal, treatments are harsh but can work.

It is absolutely correct that simple signs can be misunderstood by GP's but if there is any doubt from previous family experience or you are over 50, hopefully they will act.

Life is too short to get paranoid, enjoy it.
My colonoscopy (I was finally pressured into having my first at 70 - the notion had not appealed at all) was not painful. It was all rather interesting watching it on the tv. It is true the prior cleaning out process is not very pleasant but really no worse than accidentally drinking the local water in Costa Rica. If BB is worried, just have one.
Had three, the first and second not too bad, the third, OMG! would not have liked to be down the other end when I followed the nurses instruction to the letter to let out the 'trapped wind' causing my discomfort, the five min fart is putting it mildly, worked though

It's a very small camera! They found a polyp in me and decided to get rid of it. It looked like the size of Glastonbury Tor and suddenly these giant claws shot out and tried to grab it, stopping beside it. This is getting a bit worrying I thought until the doctor said a millimeter to the right. Then I realized how tiny the claws were and how great the magnification. They grabbed the polyp and there was a bright flash and Glastonbury Tor was gone. The report said they removed "one diminutive polyp". Never felt a thing throughout. I presume a scan can't fix anything and may not even see everything.

We don't request them - our GP refers us and there is a six month wait unless you go to a private clinic. My doctor said men should really have one after 50 years old and then every five or ten years depending on what turns up in the first. No further required after 80.

Other than for commercial purposes, does anyone use a sewing machine anymore? :conf:

My Mum used to use one AND we had 150 Friesians (plus 10 or so Jerseys and Guernseys to get the butterfat content up) ;)

everyone who has milk delivered in bottles - according to a top-ranking scientific survey...

seriously, though - sewing machine sales have been rising for years - largely due to the massive increase in jobless "stay-at-home-moms" / "full-time" moms taking up various crafting hobbies... even my missus bought one and she has a job - and she has never sewed curtains in her life...

it all started kicking off about a decade ago:
The number of Singer and Brother models sold by Argos catalogue shops rose by 50 per cent in 2006-7. Sales of Argos's cheapest model, costing £69.99, were up 500 per cent, while sewing machine sales at Woolworth's shot up by 258 per cent over the same period.
if you go into hobbycraft or any of those hobby stores - there is a large sewing machine display - same in John Lewis and Argos.... you wanna get one Bruce - they're bang on trend! maybe your local milko could deliver one? 8)

As someone that works in the textile industry, Bish, I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is for our fabricating operation to find trained machinists. The upsurge in the sale of machines is due to the rise in the Asian 'cottage industry' market, so therefor commercial, as I said. They're not 'bang on trend' at all. And your Mrs only has one because there isn't a Primark in Piddle-on-the-Gusset or wherever it is that you live. :D

I'm not sure how that contradicts what i said... short answer - as I said - yes - people still use sewing machines - lots of them! They won't apply for jobs as trained machinists because they are not trained machinists - they are hobbyists - doing assorted home-craft activities...

I've just been reading his rants in the BN comments section, the bloke is a total fruitcake, the reason I ask is I'm sure I saw that name banded around on here once, was he a member? Batman?

I know Batman well, and though he is called Chris he isn't called Amos, and to be fair to him he does publish stuff under his own name.
