And whilst on the subject, who really gives a shit if there is a trace of water on Mars or the odd bone in Uranus?
I mean come on, we are fecked at the bottom end of our society yet we spend billions on these projects to keep some researchers happy!
All I want to know about space is if something big is going to hit us in the next 30 years or so and what we are capable of doing to stop it, not the depth of a crater in some far flung point of the universe or a black hole they really know fcuk all about, just theories.
Now there's an idea, maybe we could fly these sensitive researchers who think their life and worth is far more than the average bin man off to personally experience a black hole.

I don't think they wasted much money researching a flat world bish, just had the equivalent of Indiana Jones sail off in a boat to find the worlds edge.thebish wrote:bobo the clown wrote:Well, we're still involved with CERN thank God. As for the atoms, the world would be a far safer place.

But all this stuff existed to build the super toy in the first place, it's not just been discovered as a result of billions on a giant ray gun.throwawayboltonian wrote:None taken mate. As montreal and AT have said most high quality research is carried out by universities (PhD candidates through to professional academics), government organisations, and research groups born out of collaborations; all of which are publicly funded in some way. Generally speaking private funding tends to lead to bias (again as they said!) - see the whole vaccinations causing autism debacle, privately funded and falsified research.Hoboh wrote:No offence meant here but surely the real brains in R&D are employed and work for the global companies and not financed solely by public funding?throwawayboltonian wrote:Told you guys that there would be impacts that you might not directly notice. Anyway, which ever way you look at the result Cameron cocked up, he should merely have said he would hold a referendum in the next parliamentary term, given he was going before then his successor (Osbourne?) could then have back tracked on the promise using the thing that undid Cameron, circumstances.
You do realise the applications that come from technology like this? Computing and modelling technology, electronics, high speed data analysis, radiation detectors, accelerators for use in medical and life sciences, new superconducting technologies, cryogenics (specifically for MRIs and things)? It's not just 'finding a particle that everyone knew was there'. You know the communication tool you're currently using to rant about publicly funded European research? Developed at CERN on the back of experiments like this. Give something called 'technology transfer' a read.bobo the clown wrote:Well, we're still involved with CERN thank God. Edit: In fact here's an entire document on the impact that this sort of research has on every day lives.
Sorry to point this out to you fella but the biggest leaps in tech and a lot of other areas come from conflict and the way things are going it's about to get another boost.

Well no. Global companies, take Pharmaceuticals for example, are often not that interested in big breakthroughs. They do routine science with decently qualified people for things like drug discovery. But the real innovative thinking and boundary pushing research is publicallly funded.Hoboh wrote:No offence meant here but surely the real brains in R&D are employed and work for the global companies and not financed solely by public funding?throwawayboltonian wrote:Told you guys that there would be impacts that you might not directly notice. A lot of so called "R&D" that companies do is merely taking ideas/designs/products that already exist and modifying and testing them for their own purposes. It isn't the same as publically funded science research in many cases.

I'm guessing you live in a cave and want nowt to do with any of the progress made in the last thousand years or so. Nobody hands money to researchers to make them happy. They hand money over with lots of restrictions and caveats so that we can progress. Understanding what happens on Mars, or Uranus for that matter, means that we might understand more about how the solar system works, which might help us in combating the absolute mess we're making of our own planet. Understanding depth of craters might help us understand what caused said crater, which in turn might help us work out how to avoid such a crater replacing your cave.Hoboh wrote:That's one problem with scientists and researchers, a bloody huge expensive toy to further human development by what? Yes you're right. The international scientific community is wasting it's time trying to answer huge questions about the Universe or research new technologies or drugs.Hoboh wrote:That's one problem with scientists and researchers, a bloody huge expensive toy to further human development by what? What they need to do, is just pop round yours and find out what you want to know. That way I'm sure they can be doing something useful like calculating the tensile strength of fecking hob nob biscuits rather than fannying about with all that sub-atomic particle gibberish or worrying about the future of the planet....

^^no-one is arguing about research on drugs. Some of the esoteric high-end .... & staggeringly expensive stuff is simply kite flying with no end goal.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

You look at your HR list, determine you don't know what it does, determine it can't be very important then, sack it and watch the world end.bobo the clown wrote:^^no-one is arguing about research on drugs. What would you do with a bucket of any sub-atomic particles, say protons?bobo the clown wrote:^^no-one is arguing about research on drugs. Some of the esoteric high-end .... & staggeringly expensive stuff is simply kite flying with no end goal.

But then understanding sub-atomic structure has been fairly useful for chemistry which in turn is applied into organic chemistry which in turn is applied into the methods for drug discovery........

Aye, it's been pretty well upfront in providing the means to terminate most living things in milliseconds.BWFC_Insane wrote:What would you do with a bucket of any sub-atomic particles, say protons?bobo the clown wrote:^^no-one is arguing about research on drugs. I live in a nice 3 bedroom house thank you and I don't mind progress in the slightest, but all that bollocks about space is exactly that, bollocks.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I'm guessing you live in a cave and want nowt to do with any of the progress made in the last thousand years or so. We ain't going to get a real life version of James T Kirk for at least a millennium if at all and providing humans still exist.

aye - and the experience of progress is that it is often kite0-flying research that leads to the expansion of knowledge... that's a good thing.
i think the idea that people are handed billions of quids with no restrictions and a looney idea to research bobbins and live off the fat of their gold-plated grants is simply Daily-Mail bobbins-talk.

These scientists that work on subsidies and are based in universities etc, how much do they do that leads to more breakthroughs in technology etc, than lets say, BAE systems in the private sector, for example?

Lots. It's why BAE systems partners with so many Universities for such a wide array of projects.boltonboris wrote:These scientists that work on subsidies and are based in universities etc, how much do they do that leads to more breakthroughs in technology etc, than lets say, BAE systems in the private sector, for example?

BAE send loads of theirs back to uni to do masters and PhDs and the like.
