Is it some anniversary of the Battle of Britain? I think that started in August 1940.Worthy4England wrote:Aye, Blackpool airshow. The three in the pic were on at 15:00.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Think there is some show of sorts on at Blackpool.

No, it's an annual event. The aircraft take part in shows all over the country, kinda 'least we forget'.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Is it some anniversary of the Battle of Britain? I worked with a bloke when I was 17 who was a Lancaster pilot and the tales he told curled your hair, he said you never returned from Germany without losing someone you knew or without loads of holes in the plane, it was to quote, "A bloody miracle we got there in the first place, never mind home".

That's the first UFO photograph I've seen that isn't all blurry. Well done, Bruce.

My uncle was a navigator on a Lancaster... He reckoned they were right bastard planes...Hoboh wrote:No, it's an annual event. ^^ similar. Father-in-law was firstly a navigator & later changed to pilot in Halifax's. Flew over 100 missions. Said he lost so many friends and colleagues he became blasé about the losses in the end ... being the only way to cope with them all.
Suffered from survivor's guilt after the war and said every single day afterwards was like an undeserved bonus.
Not too empathetic to those who criticised the late war bombing raids.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: General Chit Chat
Because our armed forces and response capability is folding fast, the Royal navy, last month, had no major warships at sea, we still need to fly Tornado's because we have no suitable bombing capability, it would take weeks and weeks for the army to be able to respond to any outside threat past a suicidal small amount of a rapid response unit, with the state of our so called European colleagues forces, if the US ever dragged it's feet or turned it's major attention down Asia way, we'd be fcuked.Harry Genshaw wrote:Why does this matter?Hoboh wrote:http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/rus ... spartandhp

Re: General Chit Chat
Do you seriously think Russia or anyone else wants to invade us? We don't need and can't afford a huge armed force any more.

Di you think that, without some concern that there'd be international resistance Putin's Russia wouldn't simply reconsume Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Just as they did Crimea ? ..
& then into wherever next ?

I'm pretty certain the money to be spent on Trident and HS2/3 could be better spent and still provide jobs.Harry Genshaw wrote:Do you seriously think Russia or anyone else wants to invade us? We don't need and can't afford a huge armed force any more.
Harry, don't underestimate the threats to our security that exist now and are increasing year by year, we need to maintain a robust armed services, no matter what the cost.

Crimea was a pretty unique set of circumstances but it's not like we could stop em either way!bobo the clown wrote:Di you think that, without some concern that there'd be international resistance Putin's Russia wouldn't simply reconsume Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Just as they did Crimea ? ..

I understand the need for an armed force Hobes - just in todays day and age we should imo have a scaled down force not dissimilar to say Portugal or Denmark

I don't think we need to maintain an army that could "outgun" russia on our own - Russia has at least twice the population that we do and a significantly bigger territory to defend...
that's the point of not being isolationist and forming military alliances...

Re: General Chit Chat
Unique .... sort of.. But unique enough to be very similar to the circumstances in Estonia and in Georgia. So maybe not unique at all !!Harry Genshaw wrote:Crimea was a pretty unique set of circumstances but it's not like we could stop em either way!bobo the clown wrote:Di you think that, without some concern that there'd be international resistance Putin's Russia wouldn't simply reconsume Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Have you ever actually engaged, Hoboh? Or are you happy to cower behind the lives of the sons and daughters of others whilst bravely shouting the odds?Hoboh wrote:Which are about as useful as a chocolate fire guard.Harry Genshaw wrote:Crimea was a pretty unique set of circumstances but it's not like we could stop em either way!bobo the clown wrote:Di you think that, without some concern that there'd be international resistance Putin's Russia wouldn't simply reconsume Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
