For new signings, ask the man from the Pru

we are probably investing in keeping our club alive, and the weekly PAY packets of Amos, Pratley, Davies etc
can only see us treading water in the transfer market until we get promoted or they go

PP, per BN:
I have had two good chats with Josh and he’s very committed to this club. Things could change if you get a life-changing offer from a club, a bit like Rob Holding, then it’s different. But we don’t want to lose our best players.

We are in discussions with the chairman about that [extending contracts] now and we are very focused about doing what’s best for this squad. By the time the window closes we want to have a stronger squad, not a weaker one. At the moment we’re just focussing on getting the next couple of weeks out of the way. I think most clubs will be in that situation.

I just want to make sure when I write the squad up on the board in my office I know it’s strong enough to compete. There are other teams who keep adding players – we have to be the same.

I don't think Vela is good enough at any one thing to excel in midfield (though neither is Derik and people were raving about him - must be the hair). At the same time, since the arse fell out of the club, how many players have we signed that have been better?

Better the devil you know for me. He can play in two positions and is fairly solid at both. I'd not be rushing to sell for anything under a million.

One other thing from elsewhere in the BN: PP says “We’re not yet in a position yet to be paying fees but the deal for Rob (Holding) was heavily weighted in favour of him doing well at Arsenal.”

Anyone change their mind on Vela after last nights performance? Apparently played well. An exception or a sign of things to come?

We'll see. But I'm not having it that he's talentless or washed up.

Mixed up by constant changes and maybe lost some verve but I do feel PP is the type of man to work on him rather than abandon him like the last 2 managers.

Time will tell .... & he's not the next Kevin Nolan ... but there's enough there to be a solid performer in this league and, for me, Division 2 (old money) as well.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Liam Trotter is like Xabi Alonso in this league, it's a piece of piss.

Per BN: Iles says Parky wants a winger.
Marc Iles wrote:WANDERERS will go all-out for a winger in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Phil Parkinson has lost out on two wide men in the last fortnight – and faces a struggle to land long-time target Mustapha Carayol from Middlesbrough.

The Gambia international has been told he can leave the Riverside and has spoken to Wanderers about a potential loan move. But the deal has gone cold in the last couple of weeks, with sources close to the player claiming he would prefer a club in London.
PP said rather than wrote:There will be one or two changes before the window closes. In a way I'll be quite happy when it is closed because we’ve got what we’ve got then. We’re short in wide areas, we know that, but they are difficult to get those players and a lot of teams are saying the same. We have missed out on a couple but we’ll try and rectify that as soon as possible.

It has been a long summer, a good one, but a long one. I've enjoyed piecing the squad together and it’s taken slightly longer than I anticipated but hopefully we can get a couple more pieces of the jigsaw. We do lack in a couple of areas, we know that, but we’re working very closely with the chairman and doing everything we can to add those extra players who can make a difference.

Other clubs who haven’t made great starts have reached for the cheque book and brought in players – we need to make sure we are strong enough too.

Getting the club away from a constant loss maker is more important. The only way to do that is t bring players through and sell them. That's where we are now nd I'm fine with it, as long as we can keep bringing players through.

If we get £2m for an academy player, we'd probably put a third back into the academy and 2 thirds into the coffers. It's how 90% of clubs are run and how we now have to be run

Not arguing against your central point but ISTR it costs a tier-2 academy (like ours) cost £1m per year to run, legally enforced by the terms of EPPP. In fact the BN report from when we chose not to downgrade says up to £1.2m per year depending on grants. That's three or four Velas per year. Part of the reason many clubs have given up on academies.

Well there you go.. All the more reason for the club to cash in and not buy replacements

It's not perfect, but it's the only sustainable model for us

According to the BN, we've turned down bids for Woolery, Dervite & Spearing, as well as for Vela. Plus we're in for a striker & a central defender.

Very good to hear we are rejecting these bids. Dervite might be the one it makes sense to accept? For his championship level £500k pa we can get a replacement decent league1 level CH, and still have a lot left to pay the wages for another player. It is getting to the point in the TW where a lot of the best buys have gone though...

Trouble is Dervite's injured.* But it makes a nice change not selling some of our best players*....*(This comment does not include Dervite)

The Spearing one surprises me. High wages and that thing where we had to stop playing him.

I reckon Spearing is the key to a successful season this year. Without him, we'd really struggle in the centre............and scoring goals. I suspect PP will be looking to build a team around him. He's certainly looked a class apart so far in this league.
