Have you read Smith's manifesto ? It's as left wing as Corbyn's .... but it's wearing a suit & tie. Makes Michael Foot's infamous "longest suicide note in history" seem merely a bit off the wall.


This statement, if it was the reply to an exam paper, isn't exactly wrong .... but terribly poor politics and also ignores that Daish aren't yer average bunch of freedom fighters.

I think he/or the PLP in nominating him been pretty savvy actually (comments about ISIS notwithstanding - though he later clarified to say he was only teaking about talking to ISIS if they renounced violence, which is less mad in a that's-never-going-to-happen-way).

Any candidate going against Corbs on a "he's too left-wing" platform was always going to get massacred. The only line to take is, "look, I'm just as left-wing, but unlike Jeremy, bless him [insert phrase "decent man" somehow] I'm competent".

Here I go predicting things again but: it's a lot closer than the headline CLP nominations count makes out. Corbyn still overwhelming favourite, but I think Smith will get c. 40% which hopefully is enough to keep the normals' heads up.

Smith trails behind at 7/1."

Plus, this weekend 6 Momentum people won election to the Labour NEC giving Corbyn's bunch a majority there. In the very vague possibility that he doesn't win the now Momentum run NEC will simply come back again.

I certainly don't think he'll win. However, in terms of votes cast at CLP nomination meetings Corbs is winning 2:1 rather than the 5:1 in nominations, and I'd expect a greater proportion of Corbyn folk to turn up to those. Also lots of CLPs in areas you'd expect to support Smith haven't bothered having nomination meetings.

I reckon he'll get 35-40%.

As for him, it's hard to know what to think. I'd nut even heard of him 3 months ago. The manifesto he has put forward could be Corbyn's. He's not who I'd pick, but I think he actually wants a Labour government, and we're at the point where that's literally enough for me!

I can happily say that since they were lads on byker grove, many years ago, I have never watched a whole programme with either/both of them in it. I'm still happy with that! Still - now Farridge has stood down I guess you're looking for someone of equal stature to invest your opinions in!

In news of slightly more importance, the Jewish Labour Movement the other day endorsed Smith by 92% to 4% to Corbyn. His fans might not think Corbynism has a problem with anti-semitism, after all, a Jewish member being shouted over so she couldn't speak just "sounds like any constituency meeting", but Labour's Jewish members quite clearly seem to think it does.
