Also, Jussi's lad always looked too small to me to make it as a keeper nowadays.
Was reading yesterday that in 1961 Mexico turned up at Wembley for a friendly against England with a goalkeeper who was only 5ft 2in. Losing 8-0 didn't deter them from including him in the World Cup squads in 1962 and 1970.
Not that I'm saying we should sign Jussi Junior, or chop him off at the knees...
Mexico's legendary Jorge Capos was only 5'5, too. His shirts made him look a foot taller

Re: Retained list
EDIT more clubs added
Might as well keep the retained/released lists in here...
As expected, Rotherham release Tom Thorpe. Also goalkeeper Lee Camp (32), defenders Stephen Kelly (33), Joel Ekstrand (28) and Kelvin Wilson (31), plus midfielder Chris Dawson (22). They've offered a certain Danny Ward (26) a contract extension but he's expected to leave. Hmm...
Barnsley have released defenders Aidy White, Callum Evans and Lewin Nyatanga and midfielder Ryan Williams, while midfielder Josh Scowen and forward Marley Watkins have declined extensions and will be freebies.
Burton have released first-choice goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, defender Phil Edwards and midfielders Lee Williamson, Callum Reilly and Charlie Gatter.
Preston are cutting Jermaine Beckford (33), Anders Lindegaard (33) and Clive Smith (19, defender, never played.
Forest might be cutting some, judging by new boss Warburton’s comments: "We came in to 33-34 players and we are trimming. We need a tight squad. I want a squad of 21-22 players next year. A tighter squad is far more beneficial than a heavy squad."
Ipswich haven’t announced their retained/released list yet, but have said that Christophe Berra will leave to be nearer his family in Scotland. #alnwick
Norwich are canning goalkeeper John Ruddy (30), defenders Sebastien Bassong (30), Steven Whittaker (32), Ryan Bennett (27) and Michael Turner (33), midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu (30) and striker Kyle Lafferty (29).
No word yet (as I can see) from Leeds, Derby, Brentford, Cardiff, Villa, Wolves, Bristol City, QPR, Birmingham, Blackburn, Wigan or the six sides in the promo slots.

Re: Retained list
Scunthorpe have released centre-back David Mirfin, who scored their winner against us. Sheffield-born and 6ft 1in, so that's two Parky ticks, but he's just turned 32.
Also leaving Glanford Park is Scott Wiseman; beaten by Ben Alnwick to the PFA Fans' Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award for November, Hull-born Gibraltar international Wiseman is predominantly a right-back but has played across the back four. And, yes, he's six foot tall. Again, though, he's 32 in October (and I still suspect Stephen Darby's above him on Parky's shopping list).
Keeper Joe Anyon (30, Lytham St Annes, 6ft1in, played against us at Glanford) is also released, as is Jamie Ness. As can be guessed because his forename is the same as Ms Lee Curtis and his surname is a loch, Ness is Scottish. He's a 6ft+, central midfielder, just turned 26 and started at Rangers (so I daresay our mate will be along soon to say he's either a world-beater or pish). Left in 2012 when the arse fell out of the club, going to Stoke on a four-year deal from which the Potters cut him loose a year early after successive loans at third-tier Orient and Crewe. He joined Scunny and played 30 times last term but only half that many this time due to injuries.

Re: Retained list
True. Bolton's Eddie Hopkinson was five feet ten tall (I'd have gone for five nine having played golf with hm a couple of times) He holds the club record for appearances (578 matches). He was a brilliant keeper, earned 14 caps for the England national football team from 1957 to 1959, and was England's reserve goalkeeper at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He also won 6 Under-23 caps for England.throwawayboltonian wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2017 1:32 pmre keeper height whilst tall keepers are preferred for obvious reasons, there have still been good top level "short" ~6ft keepers: Shay Given, Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes, David Ospina (prior to Arsenal good keeper), Claudio Bravo (again prior to playing in England seen as good), and Kaspar Schmeichel (THAT surprised me given his dad's height).
Height doesn't limit a goalie so much as ability and athleticism.

I'd imagine it would have been less of a handicap then TD. Fewer giants around for set pieces.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2017 3:49 pmTrue. Re: Retained list
You've also got to factor in that until the mid-90s almost all goalkeepers everywhere were universally dreadful. With about 3 exceptions.

Re: Retained list
Course it does. You're listing keepers around 6ft. Kaspar S is 6ft 1 in. Not huge for a keeper. But still.throwawayboltonian wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2017 1:32 pmre keeper height whilst tall keepers are preferred for obvious reasons, there have still been good top level "short" ~6ft keepers: Shay Given, Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes, David Ospina (prior to Arsenal good keeper), Claudio Bravo (again prior to playing in England seen as good), and Kaspar Schmeichel (THAT surprised me given his dad's height).

How many sub 6ft keeper will you see in the modern game at a high level? Very few. Height doesn't make you good. But a lack of height is very hard to compensate for now.
