Re: The athletics/running thread
Give over! I did a shocking 15k today: slow and felt dreadful but at least wanted to come on here and be smug. F*cking cnut !!

It's not a proper fell race! Even I did it.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2017 9:12 pmDone a couple of fell races this week. Harrock hill on Wednesday which is more of a trail race, and is 6 miles of constant running. Yesterday was Turnslack over Littleborough way. 2 miles longer with 3 or 4 absolutely brutal climbs. A chance to rest the lungs a bit but murder on the knees.
My hill climbing is pretty weak and I kept losing places on the ups but gaining them back on the descents. Finished in the top half of the field on both days (just ) but still a few minutes off my best yet. Must be all those post park run breakfasts!
I fancied it again but have managed to bollox up my calf again and won't be running for a bit now. Off on holiday on Weds so will just rest for another 2 weeks and start again.
PR breakfasts are fine ........... as long as you don't eat for the rest of the weekend.

Haha, the furthest I've ever run by some distance, I think partly because I couldn't do a park run yesterday so the legs were a bit fresher.

Re: The athletics/running thread
As I'm at the cricket tomorrow I'll have to miss parkrun. However, being as Thursday's run was the first one post back-bother during which I had no reaction whatsoever, I'll be up early to continue the progress on my own around the streets. #bury10k #toaman

Re: The athletics/running thread
The Nike+ Thief has nicked 5K off me already this month through stopping mapping me halfway through runs. Anyway, logged out and back in again and it worked ok on tonight's rain-soaked trudge.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Sunday set out to do 9 miles including mega hill. Started deliberately slow at 8:30 miles, 3 miles in mega stich, dying, cut it short and walked back a 10k in 56 mins.
Monday, thought screw it I'm going for it, did the same 10k in a pb 47:34.
Don't understand.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Ran Bolton PR last Saturday, the same PR course on Tuesday, 6K through the mud and puddles of my local park on Thursday, 18 holes of golf this evening. Legs are a bit stiff but I'll be at LHP tomorrow. Anyone else?

Not around this week. Doing the newest Leeds one in Rothwell and taking it very steadily. Barely run for 6 weeks now, but calf seems better.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2017 10:14 pmRan Bolton PR last Saturday, the same PR course on Tuesday, 6K through the mud and puddles of my local park on Thursday, 18 holes of golf this evening. Back in the game! I got caught short at the start trying to chat up some hottie by feigning interest in her dog, but once I weaved my way through felt ok. Lost a lot of fitness in the last month and a bit though.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:43 pmYeay. Best time of the year. Re: The athletics/running thread
Have any of you had your gut biome improved. It's the very latest 'thing'. There are more bacteria in our guts than the total number of our own cells in our body and the composition of your gut bacteria can alter all kinds of biochemical pathways. In the latter stages of my recent recuperation I was given some poo transfusions to see if it would help. I was very sceptical that it would do anything at all, but the transformation of my general well being was quite staggering. I'm a convert. I've since taken a wilding diet on where you eat stuff out of the wild with as little processing as possible (mushrooms, berries, seeds, all just lightly washed) to increase the diversity of my gut biome. It's doing me good.

I've read about both this and DNA testing. As I don't have any major health concerns I thought it wouldn't really tell me much but it's interesting stuff.
A friend of mine works for DNAfit, they give you detailed nutritional and training advice from a cheek swab. Seems a bit fanciful to me, he admits there are lots of environmental factors that it obviously can't take into account, but I think it can flag up stuff in certain people that is useful.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Yes, I had a DNA analysis last year but it didn't show anything worthwhile that could be altered or which might have affected my metabolism/well-being. I wasn't sceptical about the DNA analysis - I was kind of hoping that it would show something significant so that the doctors could hone straight in with specialist treatments, but that wasn't to be. The gut biome thing came as a complete surprise to me - I just never imagined it could be transformative: I thought it was just dabbling, maybe I was even as cynical as to think it was just quackery.LeverEnd wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2017 9:05 amI've read about both this and DNA testing. Re: The athletics/running thread
Did the PR course last night and struggled with my breathing all the way round. Completed the 5K but could've walked off at any point. It was as humid as 4uck but I'm really struggling to understand why I struggled. Any pointers?LeverEnd wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2017 1:27 amBack in the game! Re: The athletics/running thread
Happens to me too sometimes, never figured out why.
Theories include:
-Concentrating too much on breathing thus making it non automatic and unnatural.
-Too hot/humid
-Too much pollution
-Setting off too slowly

Re: The athletics/running thread
Sometimes you just have a shitty day. Happens to me regularly. Especially if I've upped the training a bit and the body is adapting to that. You've been running more in the last few weeks I think so that's possible. Usually precedes a boost in fitness if that makes you feel better!

Re: The athletics/running thread
Cheers Pru
Was definitely concentrating on it constantly after realising I was struggling
Ridiculously humid night
If anything I set off too fast though.
I'll go again tomorrow and see how I am.
