I want players for the first team first. Madine is the target man top striker and Parky isn’t changing his formation. Forward will only therefore be cover. And yeah you would need to write off Wilbraham.

CYL is a no brainer if he wants to come and we can afford him. With his quality he would improve our ball retention and creativity immensely, something we are really missing at the moment. Hope we can it it done.

Wilbraham is 38 and can't run and jump. Fully grown...aye I'd say. Him covering for 10 minutes at the end of a game is a stretch. Try playing him 5 or 6 games in a row if Madine is out and see what happens. It wouldn't be pretty.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 1:05 pmWe don't have "no cover whatsoever", we have a fully-grown professional target man in Aaron Wilbraham. I too would like us to hire another striker, and plainly so too would Parkinson. The latest is that they're waiting for Madine to sign in order to discover what kind of striker to find. Interestingly, Iles suggests that had he gone to Cardiff or wherever we'd have gone for Darren Bent, whom Parky knows from Charlton (he didn't manage him, but he was Pardew's assistant there; by the time Pards left, so had Bent).

I quite agree. Still doesn't mean we have no cover whatsoever. The simple fact is we have a professional centre-forward on the pay-roll who was hired by the current management team to play football. To say we have "no cover whatosever" is factually incorrect – and that's without mentioning Adam Le Fondre, who's scored 43 in 116 games at this level. I know you don't like him either but I wouldn't want any apparent confusion between opinion and fact to give you a reputation for hysterical hyperbole – it might lessen the impact of your finer points.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 1:45 pmWilbraham is 38 and can't run and jump. If Madine is out we have nobody to play there. We can name "cover". But in effect the cover cannot and will not do the job.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 1:57 pmI quite agree. If you take virtually every other place on the field we have someone who could do a job that wouldn't be entirely detrimental. But Madine for us is completely essential as it stands. Find someone else who can do that role OR do the role in a different but still effective way or take a massive, massive risk.
I'm comfortably that is where we are.
We're light in other areas too, but not as starkly as that.

Who could we possibly get as cover for Madine? A decent target man who'd come to us, knowing he'll be sat on the bench all season barring injury to Gaz, and the odd 5 minute cameo.
Bent, & players of that ilk wouldn't leave reserve footy for more of the same. If Madine does get injured we either mix it up to play to Alfs strengths or we chuck Wilbraham in.

Someone with some pace who we can hit balls into channels for? Thats most likely IMHO.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 4:04 pmWho could we possibly get as cover for Madine? Someone who could play in other roles but cover up top too.
I agree that an out and out target man is not likely for those reasons. But I think a striker with some strength and pace would be a crucial addition.
Bit like a Welbeck (someone who can play outwide or up top, has pace a bit of presence but can offer an outlet). No idea who like, but we need to come up with something.
Also, ALF's strengths are playing off a striker in the box. So I'm not sure how we'd accomodate that anyway. ALF isn't going to be the answer because however we play we'll need an outlet of some form and he simply isn't one.

Re: The Promotion Commotion Transfer Thread 2017
Just wondering; with all this striker topic, are we talking as if we're a free-scoring team instead of one that's scored very few goals and are hanging on by our eye-lashes at the bottom of the league? No matter who we get (or don't get) will the performances be drastically different to what we're currently churning out? Ball in net = win and points ( we're not doing much of either of those right now, are we?) . All else is a bit irrelevant. The point's already been made by H.G, that no striker worth his salt is going to come in and sit on the bench waiting for Gary Madine to be injured or knackered. With Wilbraham and Alfie available and Noone a possible goal scorer, we should be looking a bit further forward than "what if" situations. Somebody constructive in midfield is, to me a t least, far more of a necessity for a team that is hardly prolific net buster of the universe..............Just saying like...

Looks a good option to me, can play wide or central, a good replacement for Armstrong, and could possibly cover Madine, though it would mean balls over the top rather than floated towards his head. This seems quite close to getting over the line judging from the way it is being reported, with Nottingham sources also reporting it..

I don’t think it’s an either or. Get someone with pace who can run and add in Chungy for some more creativity and ball retention ability. That would in theory at least make us stronger.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Mon Jan 29, 2018 5:09 pmJust wondering; with all this striker topic, are we talking as if we're a free-scoring team instead of one that's scored very few goals and are hanging on by our eye-lashes at the bottom of the league? With Walker and possibly Chungy coming in, we now have about 8 players who can play on the flanks....who's leaving?

Re: The Promotion Commotion Transfer Thread 2017
Chris Taylor hopefully!
Reckon he’ll be sneaked out the back door tomorrow night on a freebie to Carlisle or similiar. Between him and Proctor for Parkys poorest signing isn’t it.
Chung-Yong and Des’ lad, great signings if we can get them over the line. Walker in particular has looked talented at this level in the brief snippets I have seen of him - they must have an embarrassment of riches in that spot i am guessing.
Burke and Cullen aren’t coming. Cant say I am too fussed about Cullen - he isn’t anything special. Burke offered pace at the back which none of the others do. Plenty to work on (he seemed to be at fault for most things on the highlights I saw of West Ham’s game on Saturday) but looked quick and composed and I think would have got games for us, so we need to replace him. And a centre mid who can tackle...(or bring Karacan in from the cold...)

If we could get CYL, Walker and perhaps Jamie Hanson from Derby who we have been linked with, as a defensive midfielder, could possibly cover some defensive positions also, and get Burke back (I don't think we would need Cullen), and keep our key players, then it would've been a fantastic window. Even without Burke still very good. Come on Ken!!

Is CYL going to be sharp enough?
I'm not convinced that would be a fantastic window. A decent one in the circumstances, but still a lot to prove.
Chungy supposedly can't come until after Palace's game tonight and if they pick up injuries probably not at all.

Yeah Walker has played a decent amount for Forest this season, in a central striker role when I have seen him. He would be an upgrade on Armstrong, as a goalscoring option in the three behind Madine, and would provide cover for Madine. He is obviously inexperienced, but I can't imagine anyone any better in our circumstances. Hanson played pretty much every game for Wigan last season from January onwards, and they want him back there in this window too. At the very least some cover for Henry and Pratley, probably better than Derik. CYL would add quality. He is a good pro, has probably kept himself in decent shape. We've got Charsley also.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 9:59 amHave you seen Walker, Hanson etc play?bristol_Wanderer3 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 9:56 amIf we could get CYL, Walker and perhaps Jamie Hanson from Derby who we have been linked with, as a defensive midfielder, could possibly cover some defensive positions also, and get Burke back (I don't think we would need Cullen), and keep our key players, then it would've been a fantastic window. That to me is way above my expectations going into the window. Can we keep Madine though? Rumours of Cardiff coming in with another bid...

Walker was on loan at Port Value last year...and didn't do much by all accounts.bristol_Wanderer3 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 10:43 amYeah Walker has played a decent amount for Forest this season, in a central striker role when I have seen him. He's made 16 appearances this season for Forest and got 4 goals.
His career is over 50 appearances and 10 goals.
I mean, I can't say I've seen him play much or noticed him so I don't know. And in the position we're in it sounds like a reasonable deal if we do it.
Chungy I think makes some sense, he's probably as good as we can add, again if it comes off.
After that I think Charsley is an odd one...I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him play again, and I know nowt about Hanson, and see Iles is predicting only 2 more in (conservatively). So Chungy and Walker...we'd still be light.

Walker: Struggles with injuries, fitness and by all accounts Hunger. He's currently playing in Forests reserves, where he's scored 5-6
In the same league, we have a striker who is fit, hungry, not had any injuries and has 17 goals to his name.
What is it with managers, agents and "whatever you haven't got, is better than what you have"

Re: The Promotion Commotion Transfer Thread 2017
Pretty similar to Madine's hit-rate before this season: 61 in 282 league appearances. His previous seasons at this level had totalled 11 goals in 104 appearances, up to the age of 25 or so (Walker is 21). Walker has averaged a goal every 349 minutes at this level; Madine has averaged one every 352 minutes (before this season it was one every 447 minutes).
Obviously I'm not saying he's better than Madine but considering how much emphasis has been placed on The Other Elements Of Gaz's Game I'm surprised to see you roll out a developing kid's strike rate as a stick to beat him with.
Like you say, you haven't seen him much so you don't know, and neither do I, but you never know, chuck, he might actually be good.
(Anyway I thought we were back under embargo, definitely, heard it from a bloke who knows a bloke at the club?)

I know people, fans, who've watched Hall a fair few times and they say he isn't ready for this league, by a long shot.boltonboris wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 11:35 amWalker: Struggles with injuries, fitness and by all accounts Hunger. He's currently playing in Forests reserves, where he's scored 5-6

I've not seen him so I don't know. I do know however, that if Ken was advised that Hall was good enough that he'd be saving his pennies. And I think Parky and his coaching team are reasonable judges of a player.
I don't know much about Walker, but suspect he is more "ready" than owt we've got.
