Reconstruction time again: the summer 2018 transfer thread

The Championship isn't a league where you make "marquee" signings anyway. Who'd heard of Bobby Reid, Diogo Jota or Callum Paterson before this season? Just being able to make signings of promising players for modest fees would be a huge step forward and give us a chance of unearthing some gems. At least we are then fishing in a similar pond to the Preston's and the Millwall's. During the second half of last summer's window, due to the embargo, and all the other financial troubles the club had such as ownership disputes and winding up orders, we had to sign the proper cast offs who would accept a L1 salary and whatever loanees we could without paying a loan fee. It was a miracle we survived.

Investment or not, change of owners or not, I can only see another season of hard fought consolidation, with the spectre of relegation hopefully out of the way a little earlier. A mixture of journeymen, young loanees and whoever else we can cobble together at relatively low cost will form the squad for now, with a possible cash injection come January if we're struggling.

I predict no marquee signings, a number of "Who"?? signings from lower leagues and the only ray of sunshine being a decent goal scoring spree from a young Premier loanee.

I'll take that. Slow progression. Safe with a couple to go, lower mid table would do me just fine.

As long as it gets the job done of keeping us in the league and making it less and less precarious each season then that should be good for most bolton fans i'd imagine

Seems Parky has offered a trial to left-back/left-winger Nathan Ralph, 25, formerly of Woking. He's asked the fella to rock up when the squad (whatever it is) reports for pre-season training at the arse-end of June.

This sort of thing happens in summer. Last year the names included Charlie Telfer, Alex Bruce, Yannick Djalo, Chieck Diabate, Hector Otin, Joey O'Brien, Luke Donnelly, Zach Hadji, Julio Baptista, Anthony Wright, and twins Rob and Michael Atkinson. During the season we tried Obi Ogo, Chris Allan, Jordan Allan, Victor Adeboyejo, Jay Beckford, Matty Elsdon, Jorge Akers, Mylo Hall, Liam Morrison and Chris Regis. You have to kiss a few frogs to find a prince.

Lion of Vienna Suite are saying - via Nottingham Post - we're one of a bunch after 29-year-old Forrest fullback Eric Lichaj. Can play either side. Scored 3 goals in 28 games last year for them. American international so MLS is beckoning too.
Scored two goals in a game against Arsenal and got a dog and called it Gunner.

Some money to spend (we know severely limited but still we might pay for a player for the first time in over 3 years) and stability in the manager and ownership, with a prospect of more substantial investment to come over the next 6 months or so.

I really do hope it isn't a false dawn, that Ken's words are true. But if they are and we can consolidate somehow...happy days.

We're still clutching the purse strings tightly, as a club, for lots of reasons other than just the players' wages although the constant flag of hope called investment is still a possibility. At least we start the new season knowing where we're at instead of the uncertainty that's dogged us for a couple of years and players coming in will also know.

Money is tight. But it seems we have some to spend. And are out of embargo. We aren't competing with the top half of the championship sure, but financially we might compete with the bottom 8 or so of the championship this time. It is small steps but things seem to be getting better, slowly. All ultimately reliant on further investment but it seems that we have some wiggle room in the meantime.

If your expectations are we should be in the premiership then you're going to be disappointed. But if we can slowly improve on last year in real terms that will be excellent.
