Re: Reconstruction time again: the summer 2018 transfer thread
SAmeobi moves the needle. He has pace, height and makes things happen (has the 2nd most dribbles per game at 3.6 after Adama Traore in the league). Hopefully we now surround him with players that can take advantage of a back pedalling defence ie. Oztumer. For me he was the best player we already had so I hope he re-signs.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 2:16 pmOne thing about Ameobi being inconsistent is that we are the first club to really give him regular football. He's 26, but his development isn't where it would have been had he left Toon earlier than he did. The chances are that Ameobi will continue to improve over the next couple of seasons, providing he continues to play every week. It's also something he should consider when looking at the offers on the table. He has improved since he joined us.

Re: Reconstruction time again: the summer 2018 transfer thread
I am happy with the Donaldson signing. The main reason is that I can't see very many strikers around that fit within our small budget. There doesn't seem to be a lot of free transfer strikers around that won't cost a lot in wages. We need at least two stikers, so for me Donaldson was an obvious choice for one of them. Hopefully our budget will stretch to Wyke and then we will have three strikers with decent goalscoring records, plus a kid in Hall who seems to know how to finish at junior levels.

Why are you so hung up on his age, PT? When exactly is the tipping point, age wise, at which a proven goalscorer can't score goals anymore?Peter Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:06 pmThat impresses me, but as I said earlier he was quality 2 years ago, but he's 34 now, 35 in February.....DJBlu wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:03 pm49 goals in 3 years is the bit that's impressing PP.Peter Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 7:37 pmClayton Donaldson signed on a 1 year deal.
Uninspiring signing IMO - 34 years old....come on KA you can do better than this

More to the point were he 29 with his goalscoring record at this level, we'd not be able to sign him.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:36 amWhy are you so hung up on his age, PT? One from the Bruce Rioja scouting books IIRC!

Wherever I've seen him he's looked like a lump, but you can be successful with lumps.
As others have said, if he's the main man, we're going to have a loooong season. If he's backup, big improvement on Wilbrahimovic.

So did SAmeobi, Ireland, Cotterill or anyone else interesting turn up for training?

Nixon morsel:
In response to whether one of them's Ireland: "No. That's gone quiet".
In response to how good: "ok at the wages".Bolton. Talking to two midfielders. Probably only take one. Both cheap enough for current budget.

Exactly, and yes he is - amazing memory there, Fella . Always thought he fits the profile.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:40 amMore to the point were he 29 with his goalscoring record at this level, we'd not be able to sign him.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:36 amWhy are you so hung up on his age, PT? Rumours:
Nottingham Post journo says we're after Forest midfielder Ryan Yates (20).

Murmur in Ipswich says we're after free agent Jordan Roberts (winger, 24).

Jack Wilshire is available and because of his soft spot for BWFC it's probably only a matter of time before he settles for a very generous £6k per week.

Yates sounds a fairly interesting prospect. Wonder if that would be a loan?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 5:17 pmRumours:

Not sure at all about Roberts. L2 at the age of 24 and appears he wasn't actually offered a new deal by Crawley???

Because players tend to lose a lot of pace once they hit 33 / 34....and pace and power were one of his major attributes earlier in his career....he was a very good player and who knows if his legs haven't gone he'll be a real asset, but it just reminds me of the Heskey signingBruce Rioja wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 8:36 amWhy are you so hung up on his age, PT? If it's the same lad who used to play for Aldershot then I'd give Roberts a go. He was too good at that level and had the kinds of qualities you want in a modern wide forward. Pace, ariel ability and a decent trick. Not seen him since then, but he was head and shoulders above the rest of that side at the time.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 5:17 pmRumours:

Re: Reconstruction time again: the summer 2018 transfer thread
In other news, 20 year old Sheffield United midfielder David Brooks going to Bournemouth for £12m!! After 3 goals in 9 starts and 21 sub appearances. Just shows what being seen to have ability and being young can get you. £12m would sort all our problems. Perhaps this shows why there has been more emphasis on us signing youngsters this summer.

If they wait a year to sign him and he does okay then he could be 25mil or more.

Yeah Roberts sounds decent. FREE with size, speed and at the right age. Also a left winger who has played left back that has goals in him. Worth a punt. The position is wide open. Prefer him to some kid off a youf team.

Re: Reconstruction time again: the summer 2018 transfer thread
Sure, and he has been linked with Tottenham and has made his full debut for Wales so they probably wouldn't have got him if he did enhance his reputation further. But nevertheless. it still seems a big fee for someone who has only shown promise, and hasn't actually delivered week in, week out yet. It just shows what is possible. If any of the likes of Hall, Turner, Earing show promise and have a couple of decent games that are televised very significant fees can result.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 10:06 pmIf they wait a year to sign him and he does okay then he could be 25mil or more.
I have wondered for a few weeks now if our youngsters will be closer to the first team squad this season. Maybe Edwards and Brockbank will start the season as 3rd/4th or 4th/5th choice centre halves? Maybe Earing and Pritchard will be 4th/5th choice centre midfielders? Chiori Johnson reserve right back? Hall certainly looks like being at least 4th choice striker. Maybe we won't sign too many more senior players? It certainly could be a policy that achieves some savings on the wage bill, and has the potential to bring in big fees. Obviously the risk is they won't be good enough....
