Reminds me of a post on Rochdale Town Council's Facebook page about their Diwali celebrations. Some dick whining about "if we tried to do that for St George's Day..." RCC replied with a photo of their St George's Day party and asked what the knob had done himself to celebrate (it's always "nothing")

Presumably the reason noone ever does a straight pride march is because noone has ever suggested being straight is something to be ashamed of. But presumably the gays had equality when you were younger too? Sure, it was illegal, and you wouldn't let your kids near them or give them a job, but they were hardly ever actually murdered or anything.

A very reasoned reply. It's all this angry young man (well, not too young now) red-faced stuff that dilutes any points you make. Nothing new there. My mother, aunts, nieces etc were all very equal thank you. You might be tempted to consider all Spaniards not wearing flat-hats and dancing flamenco with a rose in their teeth is a truth being a little relevant as a point.

Well, as a point of order, my aunt went to university, and emigrated to America, and was a 'big knob' in Boeing in the 50s and 60s, and had two children whilst still holding down a high fallutin job. She was my aunt... and I'm 63. So she was certainly as old, if no doubt older than Tango.

I wouldn't bother arguing mate; waste of breath and typing time. I could have pointed out that they were too busy wondering if their menfolk were coming home from World War II to worry about much else, that and feeding the kids off ration books and stuff. ( I was six when the war ended, my brother four-and-a half and we lived in a house with an air-raid shelter in the back yard) ) Most men saw women as more than equal I can assure you, at least in our neighbourhood.

At the risk of being accused of taking sides (I don't normally go in for name calling, but there are rare exceptions) I think I may agree with this Spots. What exactly defines a "plonker"? Is it a description relating to age, sex/gender, colour, education or political views or can anybody be one? Is a uni educated plonker superior in some way to a Bash Street product plonker? See, I know/ have known, a lot of very decent folk of all persuasions, live amongst a lot of them, worked with them, made friends with them. ; and also a whole load of the opposite kind who could be described as "plonkers". They don't seem to carry placards around their necks.

Having made the point a couple of times in the thread ( I started by saying "There are women and there are women somewhat jokingly) that all folk aren't exactly the same in either their views or behaviour, I think Pru is trying to prove they are, should be or maybe that anyone who doesn't agree with him is wrong anyway. Against that, I have no argument to offer, if one is actually needed. ? Quite where "twee platitudes and mock offence" entered I'm not quite sure. I usualy just laugh ?

Because to me it seems like your definition of equal is not what an average person would use. Anecdotal stuff isn't very helpful.

There is a balance and I'd broadly agree with a distaste for man haters - but you cannot use that to say that there aren't legitimate concerns and that still women are not treated equally in society in many cases.

Do you really want an obvious answer? You know as well as I do that (in the past, you know that anecdotal stuff you're always on about) women were paid less than men in monetary terms, and suppressed in areas like job selection and position. Do you think I can be a fan of Jane Austen and the Brontes' without knowing the struggles they had as women to get their works published? Do you think I never heard of suffragettes and their reasons for being such? I was talking equality in respect terms (as you bloody well know).

Why not ask the question by who(whom) were these "atrocities" carried out? Who made such decisions? It wasn't by the likes of me, even by you, but by a series of committees, dignitaries, folk in authority and all emanating from that seat of extreme power we call our government equally backed by our laws. Who or what is going to change anything that doesn't take its authority from up the pyramid (where the chief Pharaohess incidentally is actually a woman) ?

But hey, it's 2018, and guess what? I have three daughters (A carer, one in law and one self employed in real estate), three female granddaughters and actually live in working class land having spent a long time working with intelligent women, most of whom were getting paid more than me. We live in a country with a Queen, a female prime minister and our local councillor is a woman and the only folk you'll see howling about it aren't looking for that good old "equality" chestnut, but because most of them complain when it rains or Bolton lose or here comes another band waggon to jump on..

But you said "amongst normal folk when I grew up they had equality". Which suggests there is a measure that can be applied to that. But seemingly what you meant is that you didn't personally oppress women. Which is fair enough but nobody accused you of that. But across society they were generally disadvantaged. Even amongst "normal folk".

But still there is a gender pay gap, there are a shortage of women in senior positions in 2018. And there are many other areas whereby women are treated differently to me.

There's me thinking she was some sort of a modern well-paid person in charge of some "Women and Gender studies" group. How wrong can one be and how easy to jump from one era to another.

Just as a matter of interest, how far "back in the day" can you personally go? I thought you were a child of the revolution when they were singing along to Depeche Mode and all that stuff, or am I mixing you up with Insaney?
