Re: General Chit Chat
Quite frankly, since K.K doesn't know me from Adam (whoops) and is decidedly unlikely to be interested in me, or ask how I'm doing up in Farnworth, I'll happily return the compliment and even wish her well in the bargain. I couldn't really care less what she does or how she raises her kids; not in the very slightest. Not my business.
My objection is based on her using her "name and fame" to make personal statements knowing full well that a whole army of "me-too"'s and the ever ready media sensationalists will publicise it to death and pound its drum across the nation (world?) making it appear as some sort of divine new commandment when it's nothing more that one "person's" (note that, it isn't new, Jane Austen repeatedly used "creature" as a term two hundred years ago) opinion. "Folk" are funny and some, decidedly strange and easily led; look at the multi-thousands who travel and turn out to wave flags at any wedding associated with Bucks Fizz and stand for hours in the rain to find what sort of new little "person" our tax bills will have to contribute to next, then cheer wildly about it and take a million selfies whilst doing it... . Keep views on family personal, it's your own business till somebody makes it theirs.
ps: I just came back from a hospital pre-surgery appointment to have a hernia sliced up soon, so I may be a little less humanitarian than normal this morning...

See - I broadly agree. I absolutely want celebrities to voice their opinions on subjects IF they wish to. I think it actually is important they do use their voice to have a say and when they influence young people its important to do so. You don't have to agree with them, but its better they have a view and say to their fans that its a good thing to be informed and take a view. So I don't buy into the idea they should "keep quiet on their personal views". At all.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 11:17 amQuite frankly, since K.K doesn't know me from Adam (whoops) and is decidedly unlikely to be interested in me, or ask how I'm doing up in Farnworth, I'll happily return the compliment and even wish her well in the bargain. However, I do think they should not use their kids as vehicles to pass on their views and opinions. Its a distasteful aspect of modern life. You see the weirdos on twitter posing pictures of their 5 year old kid at an anti-brexit rally or something telling us how little Johnny was "heartbroken when we told him we'd voted to leave". Bollocks. Little Johnny was about 3 when that happened and probably his major thought that day was whether he'd finally be allowed to eat a proper breakfast rather than be fed mung beans and lentil soup for the rest of his childhood!

Re: General Chit Chat
But surely it all depends what the subjects are and what opinions and personal views they have and if, Lord forbid, they happen to be totally wrong What price being a celebrity then? ? Oh, I agree they have to be entitled to their views just like the rest of us, it would be ridiculous and hypocritical to think otherwise, but just the fact that they are "celebrities" (what exactly constitutes one anyway?) doesn't give their opinions any more weight than your next door neighbour. In fact, a lot of "celebrities" talk a load of borax and do it on inflammatory issues. In that case, who they are ceases to matter a damn except when they use their position as a personal soapbox . That's hardly encouraging free speech, rather "here's what I think you should all do!" That's the real issue, not their views.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 11:47 am

It's about context. And clearly how they go about it. Everyone hates Jamie Oliver because the bloke is an irritant and has always been an irritant. But on top of that he now seems to exist solely for the purpose of telling people what they should eat/cook and let their kids eat. As much as he's right - he's still a loudmouthed idiot who has shit restaurants and spent years pretending to be a cockernee...TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Thu Nov 01, 2018 2:36 pmBut surely it all depends what the subjects are and what opinions and personal views they have and if, Lord forbid, they happen to be totally wrong What price being a celebrity then? ? On the other hand you have celebrities who have opinions and support charities or campaigners or whatever and talk about their views without becoming a completely tiresome individual. Or famous folk who (say Martin Lewis) use their knowledge and position to try and ensure people know facts and will correct political misinformation without being political.
End of the day the way I see it is they are free to lecture and pontificate, if we don't like it or think they have no basis or relevance then we don't need to listen. I don't buy the argument that just because they are famous they shouldn't use their platform to talk about things. But you have to assess it on an individual basis I guess.

She's in the nutcracker. So yes. She's not opposed to fairy tale princesses you know? Just particular aspects of some stories. Has absolutely nothing to do with money vs morals.

He didn't get it. The Russians are pissed off. Andrei Klimov, head of Russian senate state sovereignity committee has threatened that Moscow will "torment with lawsuits" those who circulate information damaging Prokopchuk's reputation.
He added, "Russia should also take other serious measures, not necessarily public ones".

Re: General Chit Chat
As was pointed out by a letter in the Times. When baptising infants the godparents are asked "Dost thou, in the name of this child, renounce the Devil and all HIS works".
Can I possibly suggest that that is changed to all his white ageist brexiteer works.

Re: General Chit Chat
Ah, where would we be without a bit of controversy? Dame Freda Evans, a Church of England Vicar for 20 years, now wants the "Three Wise Men" dropping from childrens Nativity plays in favour of Three Wise Persons" (I wonder if she means Wise Women? otherwise, why bother?) They can apparently choose to be Angels, sheep (presumably female, shepherds, or Wise Persons..
I mean, are we gradually obliterating the term "men" from our language? Since the time of the Old Testament the teachings from back then have been the "Bible" to all believers in God. Jesus Where the new Testament began 2018 years back (or so) was the "son" of God, not his daughter. He had an earthly mother, without whom he couldn't have been created in his present form, isn't that enough? Heavans above, Mrs Evans,...... oh, how ironic? If it weren't so, you'd be out of a job..
p.s. This morning I saw two men I know. I've known them a long time and they're definitely men, just like me. We might be persons in the sense of living humans, but we're "men" whether it suits anybody or doesn't. .A few thousand years versus Mrs fifty something attention seeker? A no-brainer I'd say....

Re: General Chit Chat
Anybody in Paris over the weekend? My uncle (who lives in Manchester) goes to visit his granddaughter in France, just before Christmas, every year. This year, due to various reasons, he visited earlier than usual. He takes a taxi across from Folkestone, he has done for years now - same taxi, same driver.
Anyway, its all gone pear shaped apparently. The taxi was attacked by a mob who set about them. The taxi is a burnt out wreck. He's in pain with what he suspects is a broken wrist. He's lost contact with the driver, and he's called me for help!
I haven't got a clue what to do next!!! I've passed the buck and called another family member...

Hope he's okay Spots. Been reading about that only this morning. What can be achieved anywhere by riots, ransacking and arson is totally beyond me. General update. He's found his taxi driver. They are being put up in a hotel tonight on taxi company insurance. He can't be arsed to find s hospital until he's back in UK. Apparently riots are Really out of control where he is - Rue de Lobau.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Sun Dec 02, 2018 2:49 pmHope he's okay Spots. Been reading about that only this morning. Are the forty one days of Christmas over yet?
I'm thinking of going into business (now I've been made redundant). I'm thinking of producing Advent Calendars: the 2019 one will count down from December 1st. The 2020 one from October 31st, and the 2021 one will count down from January 1st.
