Cheers Tango. Good to be backTANGODANCER wrote: ↑Thu Apr 12, 2018 8:12 pmWelcome back A.T. Glad you made it safely. That's a pretty spectacular vista you have there. Going to be a bit different climate wise to what you just left, but the view is sensational so that should help make up.
Weather more Dubai than Scotland today, absolutely roasting in the house! Looking forward to cooler weather for sure...

Nah, I'll leave the farming to the neighbours. Does feel like being on a farm though with the neighbours chickens roaming my garden, sheep in the field next to the house and Farmer Dave from up the road up and down on his quad bike (doing what I don't know).Montreal Wanderer wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 2:47 amGentleman farmer, eh? The very best thing so far is the silence. Aside from a very occasional vehicle all I can hear is the birds and the rustle of branches. Beats a gob full of sand and the constant drone of the highway

Hah!, they might not be crushed, but I bet the sell by date was somewhere in the 1980's. Also, you won't be able to buy a pack on Raasay (Land of The Wee Free) tomorrow.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: ↑Sat Apr 14, 2018 2:50 pmThe simple things in life... Local shop shuts at 5.30pm today until 9am Monday. Having to get used to planning ahead as I used to get the shop to deliver within an hour.

But, by the way, you'll be in for a treat come August. Chanterelles (Girolles), the best on the planet are very very close to you.
Get the Sconser ferry to Raasay. Head north (by car or foot), passing Dun Caan on your right. Head towards Eilean Fladday, and when you've passed the Old Schoolhouse ruins you come to some extensive Silver Birch woods. Keep going north, then head up from the shoreline to about 30 meters uphill and be amazed. Be very amazed.

God bless the cave rescuers who have saved those kids in the flooded tunnels undeground. Just four and the coach left to bring out today. "Heroes" doesn't come close to describing the bravery and dedication of these folk.

If the money/pension is right, retirement is great. I've been retired 8 years now though it seems but yesterday. A woman I used to work with carried on past her due retirement age, until one dark February morning when she was stuck in traffic during rush hour. She hadn't moved for about an hour, was watching the rain hammer it down and suddenly thought "What the feck am I doing?!"

In line with your situation Spots:
I retired as Site Services Manager at 70, the first person in the company ever to work beyond 65. I took voluntary redundancy and was still asked if I wanted to carry on for a while. It was pretty obvious the company was winding up so I called it finito at that. I have to say I have never missed rising at 6-30 and travelling by train to Manchester every day in all weathers ( a nightmare in itself) . I was in the position for 17 years in total, rarely took my full holiday entitlements and left without a presentation as the finance director thought it would be inappropriate to have one with redundancies happening. Most long-term leavers got watches, and my own predecessor received a bicycle. The C.E.O took me for lunch across the road instead.
This was in December of that year and we were even asked to pay for our own meal at the office Christmas party. The long-serving company secretary and personnel officer were made redundant and a young girl brought in under the title of Human Resources Officer, effectively to facilitate the chop for staff. Due to the security aspects, staff were notified "with immediate effect" and left after clearing their desks. The firm, once a proud world leader in its field, no longer exists. Despite all, I enjoyed my time there, how foolish of me.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
Last day will be Wednesday 28th November. Notice period ends 29th January, so that is all paid to me in lieu without lifting a finger or rolling a mouse. Plus they have to pay me fifteen thousand pounds in statutory redundancy payment to do precisely what I want to do - no more work...Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 11:18 amNice. Re: Today I'm happy about......
Plenty of people enjoy work. My own wife loves being a still teaching head teacher. When retirement age was first raised to 66 for her generation she moaned loud and clear about it. But, despite the fact that she could have retired on a teacher's pension at 55 (eight years ago now), and despite her potential pension being worth more than my about to disappear salary, I still haven't managed to persuade her to join me in 'retirement'. And all because she can't identify as somebody who hasn't got a job, she doesn't know who she'll be, or what she'll do, without the embrace of the social mould that her job gives her.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 11:56 amIn line with your situation Spots:

Ha, at the end of the day we're all nobody Spots. The secret is not to worry about it. All you really need in life is a sense of humour and a vivid imagination. This is especially true of Bolton Wanderers supporters....
