Re: The Politics Thread
I think this is probably right. However, there is a huge difference between suggesting the second group is not a tiny minority and that it may be a majority. Leaving aside racist thoughts which cannot be measured I would still guess it is a relatively small percentage of the population that would be prepared to condemn people on the basis of colour. I would also guess there may be a direct co-relation with level of education (but that's my prejudice speaking).BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2019 2:12 pmWhat I mean here is this:Montreal Wanderer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2019 1:54 pmI'm not clear on what you mean here. Also - it is in my view a mistake to think that there is simply a racist minority in this country - racism is more than just hatred and violence against people from other races. UNESCO definition of racism.....
Racism is a theory of races hierachy which argues that the superior race should be preserved and should dominate the others. Racism can also be an unfair attitude towards another ethnic group. Finally racism can also be defined as a violent hostility against a social group.
Tango and others will define racism purely as people who practise race hate and violence. You know the tiny groups of extremists who are if you like "practicing racists".
In TD's reply he said to paraphrase "there are sabre rattlers.....but they'll buy stuff from Asian stores..." And we know there are a lot of people who might not be part of an extreme race hate group or prepared to be violent but who do still say racist things, have racist thoughts and sometimes behave in a racist manner. My view is that this group is not a tiny minority any more. There are lots of people prepared to condemn people purely based on their religion/colour/ethnicity right now - or are prepared to use language that said people would find unacceptable.
Its hard to explain but - see reports of people who don't look "white British" following Brexit being told openly in the street they'd be "sent home now". That is what I'm referring to. That sort of behaviour IMO is far more widespread than overt race hate. But it is still racism.

And can you publish these reports of people who don't look "white British" following Brexit being told openly in the street...?
And did they stop looking white British following Brexit almost instantly or did it take a while for them not to look white British?

I see what you mean. An obvious racist, I mean how very fxcking dare you condemn ISIS! They're called Daesh to start with...Jugs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2019 12:05 pmI got reported on Twitter for saying we should keep ISIS members out of the UK.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 2:50 pmI will add that racism is a thing. But, a lot of people cry 'racist' when what they really mean is 'you don't believe what I believe'.
Apparently I said that because I dislike brown people. What is the world coming to when you can't say you want to keep terrorists out of your country without getting reported by a fellow Brit who decides to interpret your 'I hate ISIS' line as racism ...

"Tango and others" will do nothing of the sort. See, here is a classic example of why arguing with you is an absolute waste of time and energy. You credit no one but yourself as having any intelligence; You put words in people's mouths and make wild, sweeping statements that supposedly make your points but totally ignore what everyone else says.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2019 2:12 pm

In short, however you describe racism, its current level has to do with Brexit only in the minds of the Remainers, whether you accept that or not. You may as well claim that if the Referendum had never taken place, racism would not be in existence then?

Brexit isn't even a good fantasy.
It's not middle-aged man wants to divorce his wife so he can spend weekends in upmarket hotels with 20-year-olds.
It's middle-aged man wants to divorce his wife so he can live in a shack in the woods and do his own dentistry.

May delivers bombshell speech on steps of no 10.
Italians around me are laughing their socks off. Unfortunately her actual speech was inaudible, all I could hear was the Italian translation. But it was short, I know that. What has she done... Declared war?

Just that she's sick and fed up of all the to-ing and fro-ing without anybody getting anywhere (hear fecking hear), and that she wants it sorted by the 30th June. Otherwise we get dragged into elections in a club from which we voted to leave nearly three years ago. There'll be no second referendum either.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:47 pmMay delivers bombshell speech on steps of no 10.

Re: The Politics Thread
She essentially put a stern face on, laid a lot of blame on Parliament, tried to come across as on the side of the Nation fighting against MPs. Then stated her clear plan moving forward of asking MPs to vote a third time on a deal that was resoundingly rejected twice, while discounting a second referendum as undemocratic and not respecting the will of the electorate in the initial vote.
Re: The Politics Thread
Oh, and before that Corbyn argued for cross party talks, then wouldn’t participate when Chukka Umuna turned up as apparently he’s not a proper leader. Whatever side you’re on in this whole thing, it’s utterly deplorable that party politics is still the number one concern of both of the major leaders.

I have six meetings in the Netherlands next week. Google informs that 'Voordat je begint, heb ik geen enkele aanwijzing' translates to 'Before you start, I haven't a fecking clue'.
