If your plan need you to win over the support of 75 MPs, absolutely hammering them in a speech and pitting the people against them is a novel approach.

James O'Brien described it as borderline fascist...trying to turn the people against their elected representatives in favour of a singular authoritative voice - its impossible to argue in my view.

I think the term fascist is overused by people who don't really understand the meaning. As I recall in October 1917 Lenin tried to turn the people against their elected representatives and I don't think anyone ever called him fascist. One can certainly question May's competence but suggesting she is borderline fascist is over the top.

I'm not saying we should revoke it. I don't think James O'Brien is either but then I don't know for sure....

But let us not remember, Fascism in 1930's Germany was as a result of a public vote....

Not of Lenin but in 1962 Mao said, “The Soviet Union is today a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, a dictatorship of the big bourgeoisie, a dictatorship of the German fascist type, a dictatorship of the Hitler type.”

Well, there is a point no doubt where right-wing and left-wing totalitarian states meet and blur on the opposite end of the political philosophy universe.

Yes, but he said "let us not remember..." so it's okay for him to forget. McDarthyism is surely American democracy at work, but it is an odd democracry. Hilary had some 3 million more votes than the Donald (more than Brexit over remain?), but their system of the electoral college allows the popular will to be subverted. Still unquestionably democracy. The Nazis did not get a majority in the election - they got 44% of the vote in a PR system. They gained the necessary two-thirds majority necessary for their constitutional change by burning the Reichstag, then blaming and outlawing the communists who had 30% of the seats.

Over 3M signatures in under 48 hours. A rate of signature that has never been seen before. It does not in any way overturn the result of the referendum but what it does show is that there is a huge volume of people out there who do not want to leave. And I would argue that May's comments that sparked this petition off, have only served to strengthen that remain view and create further divisions in an already deeply divided country.

 I can only tell you that just this afternoon sitting in a very sunny square in Bellagio, quite a few young Italians were having fun adding their signatures to said petition. European solidarity or youth having a laugh, :pissed:

No vote on May's Deal. No No Deal ever. No vote on other deals. No anything.
