Mate, we were horrendous just weeks ago. Clearly the introduction of an actual goalkeeper has helped, plus the organization Gilkes has brought to the defence. I’m also convinced we are fitter - I’ll have Baptiste, Doyle and Tutte are ten times fitter than they were at the start. When we went 2-0 down at Barrow I had IE sacked - a failed experiment. But that’s football - an equaliser by his captain in the 93rd minute...and we’ve been jumped by Leyton Orient since...

Early days though - we dominated but they had a couple of good chances. Could have drawn or even been beaten. Need to get more clinical.

Fantastic & well deserved 3 points and a decent performance, Fonz needed to improve after a poor 1st half and he did just that - Tutte was outstanding along with Santos & Baptiste and most if not all played well.

Gilks has made a big difference.

Andrew Tutte, remain as underrated as you can. Magnificent all round the park today. Some of the cross field passes to Gethin Jones, who is showing Gordon how it's done, were excellent.
Alex Baptiste! Well done. Another solid performance.
Gilks, great save, great concentration, breeding confidence in the defence, who all deserve a big pat on the back.

However,

Delaney, you're on the thinnest of thin ice sunshine. If I have to defend you against BWFC_Insane, I expect better!

Overall so pleased we are able to control the game without the ball and switch it on when we need to. Now where have I heard that before?

Really good performance, it's nice to see us piling forward even after we scored rather than the usual retreat/panic of the last decade? Really good with the ball, so much movement, superb without it, we look really solid. Could have been 4-0 tonight, that wouldn't have flattered us at all. Still lots of concerns but just enjoying these results, it's been a long time.

This intrigued me so I looked back and it was arguably more like, er Grimsby.

Santos and Delaney had already started the previous league game together, at Harrogate; they’ve played every league minute since. In the 66th minute against the Mariners, Evatt hooked Hickman, pushed Brockbank forward to RWB and brought on Baptiste, and although Brocky stayed at the back against Oldham (with Bap benched), the youngster was then shunted to LWB and the three amigos started at the back together for the first time at Barrow.

Anyway back to Grimsby - when Baptiste came on for Hickman that made our XI: Crellin; Baptiste, Santos, Delaney; Brocky, Tutte, Sarce, Crawford, Mascoll; Delf, Doyle. Wingbacks and keeper have changed but that was a brief glimpse of the settled side.

What’s really striking now compared to then is the patterns of play. Then we were occasionally good but generally staid. Now we look full of running, and the nous to know when to do it. Kioso helps as an outball and there does seem a willingness to knock over the top now and again, to ask different questions, to not be predictable.

But at heart this is a passing team, happy in possession (first goal Saturday was something like a ten-pass move) but also to counter with pace (second goal Saturday) and I do think we might show that soon by stylishly ripping someone a new hole. Be nice if it were Saturday.

Was just thinking this. Some of the football we play is brilliant for League Two, someone is due a pasting soon and Southend look strong contenders for it (he says, trying not to get too carried away)

What a transformation these boys have gone through. The pressing out of possession to win it back and then the link up play with the ball, really really impressive. Enjoying watching football again. Long may it continue

I was just thinking along the lines of: 1. The back three being Baptiste, Santos, Delaney 2. Our left wing-back being neither of our specialist left wing-backs but a more trusted, out-of-position stop gap, and 3. Our midfield three being Tutte, Sarce, and Crawford.

We've since further solidified our best team by replacing Crellin with Gilks, but I think the point at which Evatt realised he had a capable starting eleven within his squad and what it might look like was after the late equaliser against Barrow. It was only then that he seemed to accept we were definitely better off with Tutte ahead of Comley, and recognised that neither Mascoll nor Gordon could be relied on, currently at least, to hold down a starting spot.

(I know Doyler was injured and thus didn't play for a few matches but he picks himself when fit)
