Taking a punt up the Abbey. V Cambridge away, 28-08-21
We seem to be talking universities quite a lot lately, Cambridge in the recent promotion stakes, beating Oxford at our own University ground, playing The Dons ( pun)and now back to the land of punts and bicycles Cambridge again. Not losing here will be a useful point, but of course, we'll win..to battle then...punt poles at the ready..

Looking forward to this. Little wander around the city, then in the pub for the early game, watch the Whites, then pub again for the late game. Oosh.

It's a half-hour walk from the city centre. Can be a pleasant walk - option of a slightly longer one up the Cam - but factor in your timings. Enjoy!

You mean I can't just nip round the back of Trinity, left at Corpus Christi and then it's there ??

I'll be honest, I've never made the walk. I've been to the city, which is pretty, and the ground, which is not, but not on the same day.

My first visit to both the city and the ground. I missed the cup game in 2000 and the previous occasions i can recall us playing here, were night matches.
They were pivotal games against these men last season. A good performance away, spoilt by Crellin's 'Man up' blunder and probably our best home performance of the season.
More of the same please Ian. 2-1 win.

I went to the one in <checks calendar> - jesus, 30 years ago. Apr 2 1991, we were third but having played more than second-placed Southend; Cambridge were seventh but coming up fast on the rails, 10pts behind us with five games in hand. This was John Beck time, perhaps the purest longball football I've ever had the horror of watching - the dude grew the grass long in the final 20 yards so their forward hoofs would hold up.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 1:37 pmMy first visit to both the city and the ground. Anyway we went down on the coach and it took days, we parked up after KO time, everyone giving the driver dogs' abuse, jumped out and ran to the open-terrace away end, turns out we were actually the first coach there. Tony Cunningham's second game, I think early on he absolutely thudded a volley against the goal frame. Tony Philliskirk scored, as Tony Philliskirk did, but they scored two and something in us suggested it was doomed to be play-off time again - we'd snuck in the bottom the previous year, now we were falling in the top.
The away game was also spoiled by an incorrectly disallowed goal when Brocky(!) was deemed offside and plainly wasn't. I'm not sure they'd conceded at home before that but they were lucky not to be beat 2-0 by us. And as you say, the home game - well, I'm not a man given to hyperbole but I'd put that down as one of the best performances (not results) I've seen us put up in decades. Evattball in excelsis. They couldn't live with us.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 1:37 pmThey were pivotal games against these men last season. I'd like another clean sheet. We've only conceded one goal in the last three games, and that was a laughably illegal handball (laughable now, but not then). We may face old man Hoolahan for the first time but you have to think that by losing Mullin they've gone backwards over summer while we've gone forwards. By 3pm tomorrow I'd accept any win but right now I'd like a nice clear 2-0 to end this busy schedule of first-team games - rest some legs and try some kids on Tuesday in the Sherpa Van, whose "previous game" rules we could have in mind when using late subs tomorrow.

Think I'll run with the old maxim that an away point's a good point today. 1-1.

Dunno on paper it’s a win. Just have a funny feeling we will get beat today. Not sure why. Probably just because we are due to lose and I guess we have to give the Wigan fans another thing to celebrate.

I'm going for make up for last season's draw. We're much better now. Not convinced they are. 2-1 Whites.

In theory these should be the weakest team we’ve played, but they’ve started the season alright so who knows. Unchanged team from last weekend I suppose.
1-2

Back to the same XI as v Oxford, which is for now clearly the first XI.

Beautiful city, warm day and happy with that team. Kachunga and Delf the game changers on the bench.
I dont generally have a beer at the Reebok and i hear a lot of criticism of the slow service. Clearly, those people have never queued up at the Abbey stadium!

For the record, while the XI is the same as v Oxford, the bench isn't. Tutte replaces Lee and Gordon replaces Brocky.
