The fact is that they're both top players at this level and losing either of them lowers the quality of our squad. So from a playing point of view Santos and Dapo going could be really problematic.

On the flip, they are both top players at this level and so they would command decent fees. So from a financial point of view Santos and Dapo going could be fantastic for the club as a whole.

Two years ago we aspired to be a selling club. If Dapo goes for big money in the summer I'll be delighted. Not because I want him to go, but because it'll represent a massive step forward for the club.

Are there any comparable recent transfers from league 1 to get an idea of fee?

Not saying it’s equivalent but back in the day Curcic was clearly our best player. By a mile. Talent you don’t see often. Sold him but ended up with a better, a far better, team that stomped through the division.

I remember Port Vale first game of that season and the odd moan about selling him under the stands. But it was a good move.

Now obviously Sasa was also a destabilising mentalist so the upside was there but unknown perhaps to most fans at the time. And I don’t think Santos or Dapo are like that at all.

But I think hand on heart I’d say if we sell one for big money it would probably be a huge step as you say because it would make me feel less like we are on a precipice. The business plan would be working and we’d have some run way, we’d also potentially be able to build a stronger squad. If not a better first 11. And the balance between squad and team quality is something we have to address and maybe need some funding to do adequately.

I'll say. Curcic was a weird sale. He'd been our only player worth watching the previous season. I was editing the fanzine at the time and we were going to press on the Friday, ready to sell at the two home games the following Tuesday (City) and Saturday (Norwich). Todd sold him on the Thursday I think and we had to dash off a quick cover saying "End of an 'ero" and a two-page farewell piece. We drew at Vale on the Saturday, and suddenly the tale got told that we'd be a better team without him and everybody just agreed with it. On the Tuesday we had some querying comments about the cover, the team beat City, and by the Saturday people were hollering at us that we didn't need him. Turned out to be right but I'm not sure I've ever seen history altered quite so quickly.

How much did Posh get for Toney? £5m? But then he'd scored 40 in 76 third-tier games over two seasons. Easy to forget that this time last year, Dapo hadn't scored a league goal.

Sure you’ve heard them but some of the tales from that pre season are pretty wild.

Obviously as fans you don’t know half of what’s happening at the time. But I doubt any fan would have said to sell him at the time. But it was the right call. It’s entirely different now but I do think sometimes selling your best players is the right thing to do and we won’t know for a while either way.

According to Wikipedia it was £5m, rising to a potential £10m with add-ons, which given Brentford subsequently got promoted to the PL and he's continued scoring goals, I imagine they will be getting the bulk of.

As ever, it's going to be market driven, and you might get a daft club come in and offer too much, but I definitely don't think we'd be turning down £3m+.

Cheers. He's still plenty to prove really. Can't see us getting an offer worth losing him for to be honest. And hope we don't.

I suspect the *waves arms around* different economic times were as much of a factor in madines transfer value at the time to be fair.

Would be very interested in some more curcic stories btw! I remember singing Sasa is a wanker at port vale so my memory and yours may not tally up DSB? The city game on the Tuesday was class, per frandsen what a man!

Quite surprised at how few games he played for us. Felt like more than 28...

My main memory of Curcic was a fantastic goal he scored at Hillsborough... in a heavy defeat. Cracking business in the end.

I was at Stamford Bridge when he scored this beauty https://youtu.be/51MqPG1VT6c

Never understood why it wasn't goal of the season.

It didn't even get shortlisted for goal of the month iirc. Outrageous!

I expect both Dapo and Santos to leave over the summer. Dapo for crazy money given his longer contract. Santos for not so much but still a decent amount to invest in a couple Center Backs.

I believe Dapo is harder to replace. Hard to find a 14 Goal 6 Assist dribbler who is available without having to pay a good fee for. Santos is good, but we were leaking goals even when he was in the team. We need to tighten up, and I believe its easier to find tough as nail defenders in the lower divisions without breaking the bank.

You're arguing different things here, I think.

You're saying Dapo is harder to find a like-for-like replacement for, but that Santos can be replaced with a different kind of player.

How easy is it to find a like-for-like for Santos and can Dapo not be replaced with a player who more suits the current needs of our squad, given the fact we often play a system he's not fitted into well?
