Re: Deal or no deal? - Summer 2022 Transfer gossip!
I think that's all true and if we got him I wouldn't complain. My issue is tactical. He lacks the pace to play wide in a three. So you're looking at him either next to Santos in a 4 (fine) or replacing Santos in the middle of the three. If he's pushing Santos wide right that's crazy, because why move the best sweeper in the league? If he's replacing a departing Santos then he's nowhere near that level and would force us to completely change our approach (no more high line).Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:16 pmA Dale supporting friend sent me a clip of his goal against Hartlepool, so apropos a bit of curiosity I did a little digging (as had Brommers, it transpired).
He just about ticks every box for me - big strong lad who can defend, but who's also comfortable with the ball and combines his eye for a pass with a very high completion rate. He's the perfect age (26/27) and is out of contract at the end of the season. Coming from Dale I doubt he'll burst our bank, and I'd have thought that he'll see us as being a very decent step up.
I think he's a better player than Aimson generally and he made my "bargain 11" list, but I don't think he kicks us on.
Again, I genuinely wouldn't complain if we got him. I really like him as a player, I'm just not sure he's a perfect fit.

In Feb 97 I was at Wembley to see the 30 year old Paolo Maldini give an absolute Left Back masterclass.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:27 pmInteresting, this. That would seem old for a striker but yeah, gives a defender experience. (Some Italians don't think defenders are born till they hit 30.)
It's not often that the performance of the other side's Left Back was so good that it lives 25 years in the memory

Indeed. It's not often you see a person in any position or role with such mastery of his craft. This is the guy who preferred not to have to tackle, reasoning that if it got to that point he'd not his job properly.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:35 pmIn Feb 97 I was at Wembley to see the 30 year old Paolo Maldini give an absolute Left Back masterclass.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:27 pmInteresting, this. He had a point. He basically played this big 'L' shape from LB which supported both winger and LCB as and when appropriate, yet was never caught out of position once. Anyway, we digressDave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:54 pmIndeed. It's not often you see a person in any position or role with such mastery of his craft. This is true. Few and far between. I can remember Gerald Cid’s debut like it was yesterday….Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:54 pmIndeed. Well done Arthur to earn a new contract. Greg Leigh is a good attacking LB if Iredale falls through. Looked decent when playing for Jamaica.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 9:19 pmMorecambe's Derek Adams certainly not prevaricating.

Arthur Gnahoua, Adam Smith and Aaron Wildig have all been offered new contracts whilst Dylan Connolly, Ousmane Fane, Liam Gibson and Cole Stockton remain under contract for the 2022/23 campaign.
Goalkeeper Andre Da Silva Mendes has had the 12-month option triggered from his contract.
Jonah Ayunga, Ryan Cooney, Ryan Delaney, Courtney Duffus, Wes McDonald, Ryan McLaughlin, Shane McLoughlin, Anthony O’Connor, Jon Obika and Connor Pye remain under contract but have been made available for transfer.
Players that are out of contract and will be leaving the football club are Rhys Bennett, Toumani Diagouraga, Greg Leigh, Jacob Mensah and Freddie Price whilst Jacob Bedeau, Trevor Carson, Alfie McCalmont and Adam Phillips have all returned to their parent clubs following the expiry of their loan deals.

Charlton have sacked Johnnie Jackson. Wonder if that will unsettle the dozen or so lads they have out of contract – including Adam Matthews, Ben Purrington, Conor Washington and Corey Blackett-Taylor - and thus make them more susceptible to any advances we might make.

Interesting approach that, telling those under contract that they can be transferred. Hardly something that will bring the squad together. Seems like a clearing house and trying to make a profit to spend elsewhere.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 9:19 pmMorecambe's Derek Adams certainly not prevaricating.

Gnahoua was probably on cheap wages so looks like thats not a big issue for them given he's playing second fiddle to Cole Stockton.

Cambridge have offered Iredale a contract, even though the gaffer said a while back he didn't expect him to sign it. Guess they have to just in case.
Greg Taylor, Liam O’Neil, Harrison Dunk, Adam May and Will Mannion have also been offered extensions.

This is my "needs to happen" transfer of the window.
I can't see another player close to him that we can get and offers his versatility.

How good is Iredale at centre-back? I like his versatility and I would now be disappointed if he isn’t confirmed - but does he drop straight into the XI, presumably replacing Johnston?

Yeah would be a great start to the summer and set the stage for a really productive window. Will be very disappointing if it doesn’t happen as I’m very invested in it now, as I’m sure many other fans are.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 10:49 pm

With the caveat that he's improved dramatically this season and there's always the chance this period is form and not class....excellent.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 10:54 pmHow good is Iredale at centre-back? I'd recommend people go and watch the first half of the Cambridge game at the Reebok from February.
He was an absolute rock in that game. Reading the play in front of him, winning every 50/50 and generally looking like BTEC Maldini.
In Evatt's system I think he's a better centre back than left back. I've watched all his games for Cambridge as a centre back this season, I think. He's obviously not perfect and we're talking about a League One player, but I don't think there was a better left-sided defender in the division this season.
I think Brommers has a similar view of him, but he can speak for himself.
As ever "most transfers fail" and all that stuff; but I'll be delighted to have him here. I think he can play a division up.
