As we played it last season, yeah. There are lots of ways to play football and how a team is written down on paper doesn't tell you much these days.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 10:48 pmIn the system you need that threat out wide. That electricity. Otherwise you become narrow and suffer from a lack of penetration.
John offers lots but isn’t going to stretch teams on the outside from a standing start. So we need that on the other side. Or the system becomes too predictable and dull, in my opinion. We have great forwards so can win games with that but still I think we looked a much more static and less dynamic side without Fossey and we must find those qualities in a player or switch systems. In my opinion.
If you watch the Traf interview he seems to let slip that we're making changes. He said we didn't go all in on Evatt's style of player when he was here, because of the dodgy start and having to make serious changes in January. We'll try more Evatty stuff next season.
Teams play 3s with far less explosive players in the wing back slots.
In an ideal world, I'd want pace, power and guile out wide and I hope we get that. It's not necessarily a disaster if we don't get Fossey MKII out wide, though.
Lets see what tools we have in the toolbelt for the start of preseason.

Latest B Team link is Matty Grivosti, who I know nothing about. Young lad from Warrington Town. Internet-based info says quick, tricky and can score goals.

And that’s what worries me. We don’t want to waste half a season again. The aim is promotion. We need to get it right to start with. We need pace and power. We aren’t going to magically break teams down through the middle because we’d need a number of players who are adept at changing gears in midfield ala David Silva and we don’t have those sorts of players at the quality required.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 11:08 pmAs we played it last season, yeah. We can’t be Man City of league one. We aren’t right for that. We can be Liverpool. But we need that pace, power and quality out wide to do so.

The BBC, MEN and BN journos all singing off the same hymn sheet on that one. Bolton got sick of being messed about and have a new target. We'll see if it's true.TonyDomingos wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 8:39 amIles speculating that a replacement for Fossey may have been identified.

Part of my confusion here, is that everything seems to hinge on Fossey at the moment. We got Iredale done really early. Great. After that we've effectively extended/re-signed two we already had last season (albeit looks like we turned down a bid from Sheff U for Santos) - so that's good too, all positive.
But after that surely there's other work we're doing outside of Fossey? It's not like we're getting linked with another CD every other day...

It all comes down to whether we get our targets or not. If we don't hear about signings until they are announced that'd actually be a good thing. If we hear nothing and see nothing then it's obviously going to be a worry.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 9:10 amIt's not like we're getting linked with another CD every other day...

We are trying for Conor Bradley from Liverpool. I had heard we were after one of their youngsters and now being reported by Nixon it’s Bradley. Obviously a good player. I’m not sure he’s a wing back.

Connor Bradley is a very good young player. Obviously not as physically developed as Fossey at 18, but a proper talent. If he shows up we've done well.

Of course it comes down to getting our targets. Evatt said not a month ago that he wanted the squad fundamentally in place by the time we start pre-season (which is tomorrow). I'm just noting that unless he announces the "two through the door" that he mentioned around a week ago, that we still feel like we have some gaps yet to fill, if we're really going to be promotion contenders. Albeit, I'm not unhappy with the players we do have, currently...GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 9:25 amIt all comes down to whether we get our targets or not. My point was mostly about links. No links doesn't mean no work being done, it just means no leaks.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 10:21 amOf course it comes down to getting our targets. We either get good players or we don't. Lack of links doesn't seem like a criticism.

Obviously? It never ceases to amazed me how wonderfully up-to-snuff folk on here are when it comes to another club's kids.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 9:44 amWe are trying for Conor Bradley from Liverpool. He's 18, but has started games for Liverpool and got international caps. Probably fair for people to assume he's useful, even if they don't follow the youth system stuff.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 10:56 amObviously? Apart from Sala, Henderson and Milner, if we were after Liverpool first teamers I'd have to look them up.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 10:56 amObviously? I watched Liverpool in the EFL cup against Norwich and he played. He’s 18 and has played a few first team cup games for Liverpool and indeed featured for about 5 minutes in a champions league win at AC Milan.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 10:56 amObviously? So I’d say an 18 year old who has started to feature at that level is obviously a good player.
I’ve only seen him once and I can’t say I remember much other than he drew praise from the commentary team.

Well, you guys crack on with those assumptions all you like. Obviously a good player? How many others have met, or even surpassed this lad's to-date 'record', yet have gone on to do shit all? Plenty.
I'm not saying he isn't a good player - but then I don't know the first thing about him.
