Can someone clear this up for me please? How many days are left in this test after today?

I'm thinking we were hoping for more than a 40 lead..but a lead nonetheless...let's hope bowlers can retain dominance of ball over bat...

Frustrating in the extreme that we threw such a commanding position away yesterday with some really silly shots. Should have been 150 ahead at least.

Something at which Stokes led by example. It was like he couldn't be arsed.

Good response with the ball, but it's still tough batting. They'll quite rightly kick themselves if they lose this...150 doesn't look plain sailing

169 all out so we're 129 behind. I'm not sure I fancy our batting chances in this.

What an utterly incomprehensible law...stupidity unbounded. I don't blame the Umpires because they have to do what the rulebook says

A prime example of why test cricket is eating itself. England need 30 odd. Full house. They’ve won. Game is not in any doubt. South Africa want to fly tomorrow rather than Tuesday. England want to finish it. Off for light.

Yes it’s the rules. Yes the umpires can’t offer discretion. But change the bloody rules. It’s a nonsense. A complete nonsense. Also not allowed early starts when time is lost. Another nonsense. 10 am starts when you’ve lost time.

It needs to wake up from itself and remember it’s there to serve the fans.

Edit: Think worthy and I think exactly the same. Can’t blame umps.

Three test series against South Africa; lost first one, won second and got it level, all set to win the third and series against tough opposition. I'd say well done and be happy. Easy pleased me. If we were just going to win everything, why play? Well done the lads.. :oyea:

Players play,( it's a job, and a decently paid one at that) fans watch (and some moan and complain about everything.) It's entertainment and usually good value for money (I've supported and spent enough in my time to be allowed a view). I also played enough at one time to get the sheer kick out of it all. It's a heads or tails world innit? :D

I'm not sure of the point you're making TD? There were floodlights on and a reasonable amount of daylight. The batsmen were happy to stay out, there were unbowled overs in the day and play could've gone on another hour in terms of time, yet they had to stop for the day based on yesterday's light reading when they went off..

I think if both Captains agreed to play on, then they should've done so.

Simply that, rightly or wrongly, rules are rules. As you have said, umpires don't make them so complaining is pretty pointless as is breaking set rules. Not saying the decisions are necessarily right, but if the rules need re defining, do it. but don't break the existing ones.

I think we are all saying the rules need changing. Nobody is blaming the players or umpires. Just those who run the game and make the rules.

Exactly, and thereby hangs the tale. Change them, define them but stick to them for a set situation. All fine, but once the tapes go up, you can't ignore your own rules till the race ends. The rules here were clear enough and though made based on yesterday's light levels, it matters not, they were made for this test. Power to the umpires for their decision.

On with it.

Dear Cricket grounds,

When installing floodlights, can you get them so they're fit for test cricket please?

Cheers.

That's part of the idiocy. If it was a day/night test (there haven't actually been a lot of day / night tests and only one in England), they'd play until 9pm or whatever, albeit with a pink ball...But you'd think the floodlights they do have would help...

They changed the rules to this farcical ‘once you’ve gone off for light sets the level for automatically going off’. But the rule before was offering the light to the batting team. Which makes more sense. They changed the rule unnecessarily.
