Re: January 2023 Transfer Window
Stoke look like selling another centre back (this time a main one), which won't help that Johnston speculation.
If his injury isn't too bad it may have done us a favour. No way he can complete a medical, you'd think - unless there's a liberal amount of manure being spread as cover.

Well if Stoke are selling Soutter for £15M then they can have Johnston for £10M.

You'd think any club that sells to them now will squeeze a little harder, certainly.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:21 amWell if Stoke are selling Soutter for £15M then they can have Johnston for £10M.

You don’t have to be ‘fit’ today to pass a medical. Depends what the injury is.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:18 amStoke look like selling another centre back (this time a main one), which won't help that Johnston speculation.

You have to be able to perform basic functions for certain sections. A bad sprain of that kind would rule a number out. They could fudge it, but that's a risk most clubs wouldn't take. They seem to be in for Steve Cook now, anyway.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:27 amYou don’t have to be ‘fit’ today to pass a medical. Depends what the injury is.

Yeah it’s down to risk level. I guess we could worry about Stoke going elsewhere. On same level I’m not sure Johnston is a direct Souttar replacement anyway.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:31 amYou have to be able to perform basic functions for certain sections. Re: January 2023 Transfer Window
Tea-leaf reading, perhaps, but I find this an interesting thing for Iles to say on the severity of the injuries to Johnston and Shoretire:
FWIW Ilesy has been strongly concentrating all morning on centre-back(s). I'm not as certain as he is that nobody else is going out, but he's closer to the story, and it's possible we're really focusing on the back if Johnston is out for a while.
Funnily enough I was thinking this morning that normally we may have heard by the Tuesday how bad a Saturday injury is. And Marc says something that had then occurred to me as a potential reason to keep schtum.I don't expect they will be made public until tomorrow or Thursday*. Surely, if you were to say one/both were injured, it would stack the deck against you in the transfer market? But I do think we'll get an idea of whether Johnston or Shoretire will be out for any great length of time by the type of business Bolton do today.
* The question has been asked, BTW!

You'd think a clean bill of health wouldn't be an issue to announce, yeah. If Shoretire's was too bad he'd have gone back to Utd today, though, you'd think.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:29 amTea-leaf reading, perhaps, but I find this an interesting thing for Iles to say on the severity of the injuries to Johnston and Shoretire:

That did occur to me. Might be dependent on Devine. But a difficult choice if say he's out for 6 weeks.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:32 amIf Shoretire's was too bad he'd have gone back to Utd today, though, you'd think.

If he has swelling or whatever he might not even have had a scan yet. And might not have had a proper consultation yet. These things take time. And aren’t always cut and dried.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:29 amTea-leaf reading, perhaps, but I find this an interesting thing for Iles to say on the severity of the injuries to Johnston and Shoretire:

Bod had his scan on the Monday and knew by that afternoon but club kept quiet about it so he had time to deal with his mental state and own emotions.
The fact is that if Johnston is fit would you want to shout that on transfer deadline day? Clubs wouldn’t make an announcement of such a thing other than through an interview with the manager and that interview would be Thursday ahead of the game.

You might want to shout it on transfer deadline day, if, you need him to go, to make way for a couple of new incomings...JSL.

Re: January 2023 Transfer Window
We used to fairly regularly leak information that we wanted known. Local journos saying "I'm told that" is pretty par for the course. "Sources close to the club" in any BEN story used to mean Sam/Phil had told them directly. Wouldn't be unusual, but until we find out what the state of play is and have seen what business gets done we won't even be able to guess what the craic is.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:35 am.The fact is that if Johnston is fit would you want to shout that on transfer deadline day? Nice to see Marc breaking out the phrase 'dead money' in the thread.
He'll be talking about Santos' contribution to the restdefence next.

Not exactly a lot of rumours to go on. Pretty much dead. I suspect we are looking at a late one. If anything.

Re: January 2023 Transfer Window
Anyone else idly flicking around centre-backs?
I'm really not seeing any realistic candidates among those whose contracts are lapsing, in divisions 2, 3 or even 4.
Romony Crichlow, a left-footer comfortable on the ball, is excelling on loan from Huddersfield at Bradford and seems to be out of contract at the end of the season. Turns 24 in June, can also play left-back.
But yeah, when that's your best idea after an hour of searching, there's not much about. But hopefully Markham's folks have more of a clue...
