Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
In other news, Wigan have announced they are cutting their wage bill by 65% and basing their squad around the academy next season.
That may put them somewhere around AFC Wimbledon in terms of budgets. That's if they avoid admin.
So when people mentioned making silly offers for their better players, that's no longer just a daft idea.
Surely someone will end up with Callum Lang this summer, for a start.

If N'lundulu came back, we'd have 4 (and Jerome whether you're counting him ir not)....BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:36 pmThe trouble is this season alone is doing some very heavy lifting for Vic and mainly the first half of it.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 1:08 pmSuspect you might be right there.
However, as Worthy showed with his screen grab, Vik has one of the best conversion rates in English football; so it's about figuring out how to get him the ball.
We've bet 600k we can do that. Hopefully Markham et al have done their jobs well.
We are comparing that to someone who has a LOT of goals across multiple seasons, different teams and hit double figures in the championship.
If it was a question of who is more likely to hit 20 goals next season we’d have to say JCH because he has a track record.
I see the argument that clearly Vic here has not had close to enough created for him but his record doesn’t just span here.
I don’t think it’s an either or anyway. We need 4 strikers, and I’m not really counting Jerome. JCH would be a real addition especially as he’s left footed.
Probably too expensive and one thing he doesn’t fill is that sort of drop in and make play happen striker which I do think would be a good get. JDB can do that but it’s probably not his best aspect.

I reckon prospective buyers of Wigan's players might continue to wait, on the suspicion that things are only going to continue to go downhill for them.
The bullshit their Chairman is spouting about international transfers taking a long time is surely washing with no one. It's 2023 - these things take a matter of seconds.

Yes and personally I'd hang on. If the EFL greenlight them (as in funds are firmly in accounts under the club's control) then that's when you look at bidding.The_Gun wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 3:27 pmI reckon prospective buyers of Wigan's players might continue to wait, on the suspicion that things are only going to continue to go downhill for them.

For as long as they're at risk of admin you probably hold fire.

Couple of things to add on JCH (& £)GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:43 pmIf you offered JCH to Evatt he's snap your hand off. But, like you say, it's about money. Posh paid £1m plus add ons for JCH and then improved him. So even before they got hold of him he was twice as expensive as Vik (when you factor in the add ons).
Maybe with this new cash influx we can afford a couple of finished articles, but as things stand I've no idea.
Firstly, whatever Posh are asking of Champo teams, they'd be sensible to ask more from potential L1 promotion rivals
Secondly, personal terms – it's the last big contract he'll get, anbd clearly he hasn't been able to agree terms with Posh, what with being a Champo-level striker.
So you'd be trying to buy a Champo-level striker, for a decidedly non-free fee probably inflated by league-position rivalry, who knows he's on his last big payday and might also be wondering about waiting a year to maximise his wage potential.
Sounds dear.

Even with the cash influx we are more like Posh than the clubs who buy from Posh.
We may need to look for the "JCH at Bristol" more than the current one. Which is what we've done with Charles and Adeboyejo.

On a related note, and not to be vultures - d'you think Fleetwood might be in trouble?GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 3:38 pmYes and personally I'd hang on. Andy Pilley has resigned as Fleetwood Town chairman and club director following his recent conviction for fraud and money laundering.
The 52-year-old was this week found guilty on two counts of fraud and one of money laundering.
Pilley was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next month for the offences, none of which relate to the running of the club.
He will be replaced on an interim basis by chief executive Steve Curwood.
Vice-chairman Phil Brown will also step up to join the board as a director.
Fleetwood confirmed in a statement that the club, which went from non-league to League One status under Pilley's ownership, is now up for sale.

From memory only, so don't quote me, but I think Fleetwood were losing a considerable amount per year (relative to turnover) and they probably owe Pilley in excess of £30m at this point.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 5:38 pmOn a related note, and not to be vultures - d'you think Fleetwood might be in trouble?

It was the case (it may no longer be) that a lot of their ad revenue came from businesses associated with Pilley; though as they were not directly owned by him they didn't fall foul of regs.
If Pilley is now essentially completely out of a picture I'd say they're in pretty major trouble. Even if he writes off their debts they're losing in excess of £6m a year, despite being propped up with slightly dodgy sponsorships. I'm not sure how long your can continue to add to £30m in debt when you average 3.5k crowds.
They might not be at immediate risk, but I don't see how they continue with anything like their current spending.
I haven't looked in detail at the legal judgement, but if Pilley's group was forced to call in debts then Fleetwood would be cooked. Every accounts they have produced for the past decade has basically said, "We need Pilley financing us and he said he will. If the debts are ever called in we're doomed, but they won't be."

I hope they're OK. Sounds like another case of "living the dream" turning into a nightmare and possibly the death of a club.

If Pilley doesn't write their debt off I'm not sure who is buying a club that size with that level of exposure.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 6:30 pmI hope they're OK. Sounds like another case of "living the dream" turning into a nightmare and possibly the death of a club.

After speaking to someone who knows more about the situation at Fleetwood than me, I rescind all previous comments.
They're fecked.
We were interested in Shaun Rooney and Promise Omochere before Fleetwood got them. Anyone else for anyone else?

Like the look of Omochere when I’ve seen him play. But he’s a winger in a front three….GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 8:50 pmAfter speaking to someone who knows more about the situation at Fleetwood than me, I rescind all previous comments.

He's just one that Evatt specifically mentioned missing out on. No idea what role the manager intended him for had we got him.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 9:31 pmLike the look of Omochere when I’ve seen him play. But he’s a winger in a front three….

I'm watching the Ayr vs Thistle play off game and some League One club is bound to have a go at Dipo this summer. Wouldn't be at all shocked were it Posh. Sent off in the game, but clearly far too good for that level.

Ghosty, know you're a bir out in the sticks. But Ayr v Partick Thistle? Fair play mate.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 10:16 pmI'm watching the Ayr vs Thistle play off game and some League One club is bound to have a go at Dipo this summer. I see Tyler Smith has been released by Hull. Might be misremembering but isn’t he one we once had an interest in?

You're not misremembering, he was linked as recently as January - worked with Evatt at Barrow and the two got on really well.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 10:02 amI see Tyler Smith has been released by Hull. Might be misremembering but isn’t he one we once had an interest in?

In fairness to Smith he was signed by a championship club and featured at that level. That was never happening to Dixon.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 11:00 amNever seem him play, but his stats suggest the striking equivalent of Joel...sorta fond memories of a bygone age at Barrow...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 10:09 amYou're not misremembering, he was linked as recently as January - worked with Evatt at Barrow and the two got on really well.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 10:02 amI see Tyler Smith has been released by Hull. Not that I’d sign smith at all. But just the name triggered our previous link.
