Would City want to send us Mbete knowing he's not going to start many games, or would they rather send him somewhere further down L1 or in L2 in the hope he gets more opportunities?

5 perfectly fine players for 3 positions. And we want to break the bank to bring in another one, resulting in us consigning Johnston to the free transfer bin?

It's illogical to think we can just replace any injured player with equivalent quality without severely impacting the budget for areas of more pressing needBWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:27 pmSee I just don't understand the logic. We use resources to sign a player not really good enough to start games to act as cover, hoping we don't really need to use them in big games. And not a youngster we own and can develop over time....Mar wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:06 pmThat might be avoided by being able to alleviate nerves. When we signed Mbete, the remit was for him to cover, not become first choice due to injuries, same for MJ covering CB duties.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 3:56 pmIt wasn't just that. If Mbete was to come back, I'd suspect that it'd be on the original scope, cover and support where needed, with starts in the cups.
Its just illogical to me.

Not necessarily. We may be able to bring a signing forward if we'd planned to do it in the next 12 months anyway.boltonboris wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:34 pmIt's illogical to think we can just replace any injured player with equivalent quality without severely impacting the budget for areas of more pressing need
We're not budgeting window to window.
The issue at centre half is it's probably the worst place for this, as it's not obvious there was a succession plan for any of the 6 unless we sold one. Everywhere else we have obvious phased renewal.
Johnston was the only one not contracted before next summer and we clearly hoped he would be.
If we did have a plan to kick on after promotion the question is whether it's too much of a gamble to greenlight that now and whether any of the names on that list are available.

Iles on Kane Wilson: “Wanderers felt a) it wasn't worth it financially, or b) there were concerns about fitness. Both arguments were presented at the time.‘

Sure we could sign a slightly more established player on loan.boltonboris wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:34 pmIt's illogical to think we can just replace any injured player with equivalent quality without severely impacting the budget for areas of more pressing needBWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:27 pmSee I just don't understand the logic. So in conclusion bolton don’t want to say why a player who passed his medical and reportedly had agreed terms wasn’t signed.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:51 pmIles on Kane Wilson: “Wanderers felt a) it wasn't worth it financially, or b) there were concerns about fitness. Leahy mentioned by ghost on here appears to be Wycombe bound.
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Probably wouldn't be a classy move to come out slagging off Wilson or Derby for last minute contractual changes. It's not confirmed till its signed and sealed. There may have been delays by his agents to push for more money and we've not matched.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:54 pmSo in conclusion bolton don’t want to say why a player who passed his medical and reportedly had agreed terms wasn’t signed.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:51 pmIles on Kane Wilson: “Wanderers felt a) it wasn't worth it financially, or b) there were concerns about fitness. Either way, silence doesn't necessarily mean a bad approach being taken by Bolton. It might just mean financial prudence.
Much better that we're trying to sign players that other teams want as opposed to chucking silly money at the likes of N'Gog style players.

^^ We've chucked a few quid (comparatively) at Vic and Dan, I might not be too quick to roll out the N'gog...
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
I'll roll it out alright. Vic had at least showed competence elsewhere. N'gog looked crap prior to us signing him and proceeded to continue to be crap. If Vic doesn't make it, it's partially on us.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 10:05 pm^^ We've chucked a few quid (comparatively) at Vic and Dan, I might not be too quick to roll out the N'gog...

Victor came from Burton having scored 10.
I’m not convinced that you can say Victor had a significantly more convincing record considering pre Burton he had been a massive flop.

Have only just seen he’s signed for derby! Evatt on MJ>MK:
https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/2 ... ons-links/
“ It is a possibility, but there is nothing finalised yet. What we will do is always discuss it openly with the player.
“MJ has been brilliant for this football club over the past two-and-a-half-years. I have a lot of respect for him and he has respect for us.
“If someone offers him the chance of a longer contract and some more minutes, then we will wish them well and hope he will produce the goods for them.
“But as I said, nothing is finalised or completed yet. It is still very much MJ’s decision and we will wait to see what happens.”

If you're going to start adding goal records to the mix then at least get them reported properly lest we end up sugarcoating history.
Adeboyejo had a 13 in 34 record for Burton, with 2 assists. Overall a goal contribution every 173 mins when taking into account time playing.
N'Gog had a 19 in 94 record for Liverpool with 6 assists. Overall a goal contribution every 170 mins when taking into account time playing.
For the record, it was 11 goals for Burton in the League One from 26 games, and 9 goals in the league for N'Gog (63 appearances, 6 assists from 2377 mins).
I think your point about Vic's history is valid, he's not been a massive success at Barnsley (from a scoring perspective at least), so I think its probably a calculated gamble based upon his playing ability. Arguably N'Gog could've been seen as a prospect given his age.
Time will tell whether Vic will come good at Bolton. He had come good at Burton. It took N'Gog till he played in the Hungarian first division till he got double figures in a season.
£4m was terrible money for N'Gog. No prior proof he would deliver, just a gamble by Coyle, who, judging by his ability to not cover tactical coaching sessions probably didnt do his homework.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
On the evidence of last night Vic will be absolutely fine.
Dragging in 3-4 players when he received the ball and still managing to lay it off to a runner. Pinning 2 centre backs at a time in the box and then just shrugging them off to get half a yard of space, before dummying it to create chances.
You don't build attacking patterns around a player the manager doesn't rate, so I'd suggest Evatt is happy with what he's seeing from Adeboyejo.

Ermmm so Vic and Ngog have virtually identical records pre our signing except Ngog had his at the highest level vs league one Burton.Mar wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 11:50 pmBWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 10:18 pmNgog had played 60 odd times for liverpool and scored 10 goals.Mar wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 10:13 pmI'll roll it out alright. I mean I think you just exploded your own argument.
Coyle didn’t have a clue what he was doing and I said so at the time (and was pilloried for it) but come on. Your argument just dissolved.
