Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
It’s clear Evatt wants to shift John and Sadlier. Which is fine but again leaves us massively short at wing back. I think we are absolutely needing a specialist right and left wing back in the squad now. It’s no good relying on converting centre backs. I’m sure Evatt knows the need I just feel wing backs are the hardest positions to recruit for.

Evatt might not see it that way. He may go for Randy and JDC as first choice LWB and RWB respectively with Iredale and Gethin as back ups should those first choice two get injured. Iredale and Gethin will have Toal and Forrester as cover as well as Ashworth and possibly Matheson (if we sign him). So Evatt may feel that he has enough horses for courses for barring all the worst injuriy crisis.

Matheson as backup to JDC may be an option. I'd still want an "oven-ready" RWB as proper competition though - one who isn't Geth, as I think he'll be at CB more often than not.
On the left, it looks like Ashworth is the back-up to Williams. I'm content with that.
I don't think the mooted exits of Sadlier and John actually make that much of a difference. They're only getting used if everyone elss in the squad comes down with a severe case of leg amputations anyway...

One of the reasons I asked how many "grown up" slots we had free (which Ghost thinks is 2) was to try and get my noggin round what may happen. If 2 is the number, then you can't have three new grown ups (and that would now be right at the top end of Evatt's 4/5 in before window shuts as we've signed 2 since). So if you want a LWB and RWB, then you're probably not getting the Guv'nor in midfield too as an over 24 signing, which I thought most had as "essential"BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 7:56 amIt’s clear Evatt wants to shift John and Sadlier. Sads isn't even a WB, albeit he's played there. He's generally a left wing, so I wouldn't count losing him as a detriment to WB role. because he's not great at it anyhow. Personally, I'd view John as a larger loss (mainly in an attacking rather than "work ethic/defending" sense, but I suspect quite a few wouldn't think losing him would be much detriment at this stage either!
If we were to assume for a moment we don't lose either - where are you targeting your over 24's? Both WB's and no new MF?

If we want to go up you can’t play centre halves at wing back. Our attempt to sign Wilson shows Evatt also knows that.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 8:48 amEvatt might not see it that way. John and Sadlier are better options than a centre half playing there currently even if not the best options. We still lack what I’d call a premier wing back. Randy is good if he gets to his best but I still think that we lack that one who is going to create double figures and score a few too. And that’s what we really need.

Yeah - agree with the last bit. I mean whilst you could make a tenuous case for Sads to be RWB cover, it's about as flimsy as it gets for a left winger, about who Evatt said when he signed, he's been playing WB and he doesn't like it, so we're going to offer him something different (paraphrasing)....truewhite15 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:05 amMatheson as backup to JDC may be an option. Well my point I guess was that selling makes sense but we need to bring in suitable specialists wing backs in their place. Not just sell and not bring that option in.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:14 amOne of the reasons I asked how many "grown up" slots we had free (which Ghost thinks is 2) was to try and get my noggin round what may happen. I haven’t crunched the numbers but does the squad calculation include GJ - cos I think we can comfortably exclude him.

Dunno on the last part mate - was struggling to keep up - might do some digging. The bit I'm not sure about is when Evatt said 4 or 5 before the window shuts - so 2 or 3 in today's money, he must have known what his ideal plan(s) for Sadlier and John were, so I'd have thought he'd have mentally factored that in...BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:17 amWell my point I guess was that selling makes sense but we need to bring in suitable specialists wing backs in their place. I'll update Contract Expiry and do the maths.
I suspect when Evatt said "4 or 5" he was part spitballing and part saying "it's more than a couple". he might have also added an asterisk to say "and if we lose any, obvz we'll need more to replace them".

I make it 20 overage outfielders including Johnston, John and Sadlier. Ashworth's underage this season. In vague clumps of five for counting purposes:
Johnston
Jones
Toal
Santos
Iredale
Forrester (first overage season)
John
Sadlier
Dacres-Cogley
Williams (there's only one now)
Thomason (first overage season)
Sheehan
Morley
Dempsey
Charles
Mendes Gomes
Adeboyejo
Nlundulu
Bodvarsson
Jerome
Johnston
Jones
Toal
Santos
Iredale
Forrester (first overage season)
John
Sadlier
Dacres-Cogley

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
I'm not worried about squad numbers. Any WB we sign would just replace one of them. You don't want "dead" wages sitting there but I think we'll see them go if we get replacements, even if it's just on loan until the end of their deals. It's a limit on registrations not players on the books. So if we signed a RWB then you just wouldn't register Sads if it came to it.
So we've two spots, plus Dec and Sads and likely Johnstone. That's space for 5 even if they were all over age.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Thanks DSB - I think the overage was 22 excluding GK's? So if we didn't register GJ for the first half, we'd have 3 slots available for over-agers?
Ideally, I'd like (as Insano says) a WB both sides and the MF general...I suspect the latter is somewhere on the radar, but less sure about the WB's...I don't mentally "count" Sadlier as a WB when I'm running through them, and if pressed, I'd respond that we have only three WB's currently - JDC, John & Williams...so if we only have 2, to go, I'd want RWB cover, first...
We still look light in MF if a couple of injuries crop up...

Think there's 2 registration windows, one now and another in Jan (because you could end up theoretically with an entirely different squad in Jan) - so probably safe to deregister until Jan, you would have thought...truewhite15 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 10:42 amCould we "deregister" Johnston? John and Sadlier both being left out last night does smell of imminent moves being afoot. I hope so anyway.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Hi! Fact-checker here.
Correct. It's 22 players excluding goalkeepers (of any age) and "Under-21 players" (definition: a Player under the age of 21 as at the 1 January in the year in which the Season concerned commences - ie for 2023/24, born on or after 01/01/2002.)
Also factually correct re windows, and certainly IMO the right decision for this window; would have to be a hell of an expedited recovery to be considered in January, but we could keep that option open.
Correct that it's a limit on registrations not players on the wageroll (hence not including Andy Tutte – overage outfielder we pay but won't play).
Also, for what it's worth, my opinion concurs with you on all those points. If we get another LWB John will be off somewhere, on loan at least. If we get another RWB it pushes Sadlier toward the door. They'll get an offer from someone (Wrexham and Orient again?), even if we're still subbing some of their wages – suboptimal for us but better than paying a full wage to an unplayable player.
Put it this way - if the right player comes available to us at the right wage, I don't think we'll pass it up Because Sadlier And John.

Also being given higher squad numbers suggests their exits are either expected or hoped-for.
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Yeah the numbers thing would be an unusual move to make unless we’re pretty sure they’re heading out the door. You can’t imagine they’d be happy campers if they do stick around.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 11:32 amAlso being given higher squad numbers suggests their exits are either expected or hoped-for.

Jordan Kadiri posted pictures from last night's game on Instagram, apparently.
Not an odd name to crop up, if it's more than just a visit.
We have previous with his agent and he's a Man City player looking for a route into English football. Got off to a flier in Sweden, but his career has since stalled a bit and he has one year left on his deal in Belgium. He's young, athletic and can carry the ball.
The sort of striker Evatt has been looking to add.
