Think this is probably true. I don't think he'll sign a new deal, but hope to be wrong.irie Cee Bee wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:49 pmI would be surprised if Baxter stays. He will want to play higher up the pyramid. He reset his carreer with us, well below where he really want to be, but would have expected to be in the Championship next season. That hasn't happened so if a good offer comes in for him, he will be gone.

I can do you a half-eaten tube of Sour Cream and Onion Pringles. Take it or leave it.

Quick thought.
If we went back-4 and signed Ashworth, are people then happy with that one?

I'm happy with Ashworth generally. He's mostly done well when he's played.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:59 pmQuick thought.

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
I'm in agreement. When I mentioned us getting the Ogbeta deal done there were a few comments about how bad he is, etc. For me it's not signing a player to be first choice. It's signing a player who is likely to be backup and making him into a genuine contender for that first team berth. Ogbeta's attack has been decent on occasion so there's possibility there, its just sorting out the defensive side of his game and making him more consistent up top.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:42 pmI'm generally happy with Randall, but he looks like he's missing chunks of seasons. If that leaves us with Ogbeta then we're in trouble. If he's being used as a sub to give us forward momentum and fill in the odd game then I would be less concerned. I'm not seeing enough to hope his defensive side improves sufficiently for it to not be a problem. If we're signing him as a backup winger with some potential then I'd not have a problem.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:35 pmOn Ogbeta, if you tell me he's effectively number 2, he's young and I assume they think coachable, I'm sorta ok (albeit he seems much more LW than WB). Undoubtedly games where the defensive side might be less paramount where he can get game time...
Is he as good as Declan John?
I suppose that's fair. He had been praising what he's learnt here and how happy he has been so I don't think he's unhappy here, I think its more just wanting to play at a higher level, as with all players.irie Cee Bee wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:49 pmI would be surprised if Baxter stays. I like Ogbeta personally, but I would like to see us sign a next-level WB on both sides. We knew last summer we needed one on the right - hence K*ne W*lson - and I think we need a Randell rival on the left. Whether Oggy's that, I dunno.
Of course, if we're switching to a back four....

If we'd signed Undertaker Spalding then things may have been different, but doesn't matter now. He's a Championship player and cult hero at Derby, which is what you'd expect for a player of his quality.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:10 pmI like Ogbeta personally, but I would like to see us sign a next-level WB on both sides. We have two wingbacks in place who can help us beat the middling clubs. We need two who can make a difference against the best.
Dead simple now. 4 windows of not getting that issue properly sorted. If they think Oggy is the answer on the left they have to be right about it. I have my doubts. I'm definitely not having it that the solution on the right is Cogley and Mathseon.

I'm not sure, simply because I've never seen him there. TBH I've not seen a vast amount of him at LWB either. In what I did see, he didn't scream "title-winning left-back stranded in the wrong system".nicholaldo wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:18 pmI think I would be, yes.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:59 pmQuick thought.

Iredale, Johnston, Ashworth and Williams.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:30 pmI'm not sure, simply because I've never seen him there. TBH I've not seen a vast amount of him at LWB either. In what I did see, he didn't scream "title-winning left-back stranded in the wrong system".
We weren't good enough down that flank this season and it could already be pretty crowded.

Aye, which is why (even with your commendable parsing of "ones for the future and ones for the now") I'm not sure we should be signing Ashworth or Ogbeta. Strong argument for saying we need better than Ogbeta, more worth than Ashworth.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:48 pmIredale, Johnston, Ashworth and Williams.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:30 pmI'm not sure, simply because I've never seen him there. Wouldn't argue with that for a second.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 4:52 pmAye, which is why (even with your commendable parsing of "ones for the future and ones for the now") I'm not sure we should be signing Ashworth or Ogbeta. The coaching staff have to get it right.
Saturday shows they've got something significantly wrong this season. The fact you can fit it into a pattern means they've let something go for a while.
That doesn't change financial realities, though. We don't have a functioning academy and the money at this level is in players 24 and under. We need to sign lads, improve them and flip them. Balancing that with getting enough quality in the 11 to storm the league is a challenge, to say the least.
I'm not here trying to sell easy answers. This is a summer where everyone will have to earn their corn.
Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
I'd be happy with Ashworth in a back 4. If we're looking to sign him to play in a 5 I'm officially worried. Good player, lots of headroom but never a wing back.
In fact I'm convincing myself we are have to him as part of the third great formational re-set.
Is Iredale under contract? You'd think he'd be the other LB if so.
