Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
The two we've got in feel like "housekeeping" at the moment. I mean by that, Forino, as you suggest, might be a better Santos back-up than last seasons alternative, he might be better than Santos for all I know, but unless he's going to replace Geth (maybe?) I still don't have it as a game-changer. Same with Southwood (albeit, I thought Coleman was pretty poor when he first came in for Baxter and certainly IMO cost us points.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 2:08 pmYes, I hope it is. Particularly the latter. I didn't mind Ashworth, looked technically sound and seemed of good character, but I don't think his permanent signing would have revived the HMS PTL memes.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 1:38 pmCould the Ashworth thing be a combination of us getting cold feet and/or we have someone better on the radar?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 11:39 amThe timing of Ashworth's announcement is odd, as if he's only just discovered we're not fulfilling the deal discussed last summer.
We need different types of signings for different positions – on the pitch and in the squad. Southwood should be a lot better Baxter backup than Coleman; Forino sounds fine as a Santos backup or perhaps a more physical alternative when required. But for wingback, on both flanks, I would like us to sign a first-teamer, a gamechanger. I don't want a backup to Cogz, who's a good lad but has only really excelled in home games against poorer teams. Randell is great on his day - man we missed him at Wembley - but he's only ever a sprint or a block tackle from six weeks out; if we could sign a title-winner of a left-sider, Randell would be a superb sub (on either side) and backup option.
I agree we need WB's, if we're persisting with them, as a priority. I'd still like to see the gap left by Paris, filled with "something" - I'm not entirely held to seasoned pro - Paris wasn't and did pretty well for us, but that still feels a larger gamble, when you consider folks like Shortire and Beck.

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
Yeah I'm not saying we ONLY need WBs.
Indeed, I think I said a month ago that just to get to two XIs, we need a quartet of new faces across the entire 4 of the (current) 3-1-4-2. And that's assuming we don't consider it a priority to upgrade on Morley as the backup "1". You could call Moz an 8 but right now we have four central midfielders for three positions.
So I would expect at least one "first-choice" face - a new Paris, if you like, and more importantly if one's available - plus maybe one more adding depth.

Couple of potential 8s seem to be leaving Lincoln. We might have higher sights, though.

Ashworth signs for Blackpool. Can’t say I’m too fussed about us not signing him permanently. We’re going to need better than him if we want to get promoted and I’m confident the recruitment bods have better targets lined up.

Ashworth and Ramsay, interesting to see how both got on. Neither got much chance here.

He's got a goal every 2.6 games last season in league two. Seems like a decent strike rate. Would've initially had this as a B-team signing like Matheson style, but who knows.TonyDomingos wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 10:12 pmPutting the Lols into the transfer window.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 6:39 pmKlaidi Lolos heavily rumoured to be joining us from Crawley Town.

This guy wouldn't come here to be in the B team, he was one of Crawley's best players who have just got promoted to League 1 - rumour is we have paid a decent fee for him.Mar wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 11:30 pmHe's got a goal every 2.6 games last season in league two. Our B team has been made up of players released from other clubs, youngsters showing occasional promise or who have lost their way after injury (eg Matheson)Mar wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 11:30 pmHe's got a goal every 2.6 games last season in league two. Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
I watched Crawley on the telly a few times I can see the logic because they were a pressing side who worked hard. 23 and a good age and a big physical specimen which Evatt also seems to be highlighting.
Don’t know enough about him and I’m concerned to an extent he’s being described as ‘versatile’ which often means we don’t know where to play someone to get the best out of them. It’s also a step up. If he plays in midfield then it’s a big physical hard working but potentially goalscoring midfield player. Which I think is a type we have needed. I’m less enthused tbh if we see him as a striker as it feels like a lot to invest in someone at this stage. He’s also not played that much league football yet so feels like a risk.

I dunno. Arguably, our best two with back to goal and ball in the air - DadBod and Jerome - have both departed. None of the rest are particularly auspicious, I wouldn't be too unhappy if he was a forward and had some of thst in his locker, but don't recall ever seeing him play...

Could give us an option to play a 433 with mendes gomes / Collins plus Charles. Based on what I’ve just read about him!
Or is he the Paris replacement?

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
Yeah - I think like Insano says, "versatile" covers a whole range of options - I play LB, LWB and LW - versatile. Problem is I'm shit at all of them and master of none...I remember when we were shopping for an entire squad back in the day, after rescue, many of our signings came with the tag "the complete [forward/midfielder/defender*]" *delete as appropriate. I did make me wonder, when I saw some of them play!officer_dibble wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 11:28 amCould give us an option to play a 433 with mendes gomes / Collins plus Charles.

Yeah
For example Jack Iredale - never a LWB at this level. But signed cos he can play it.
