I’ve never watched a Bolton side win promotion without a clear identity around how they’d score a goal. And Evatt has an identity it’s just that the identity requires a quality of player we can’t and won’t possess to work week in week out.
We scored about 125 goals last season

"No I'm talking about the games we didn't score in"

Get the most out of what we have available instead of constantly thinking the answer lies in the market. Obviously we need signings.
You've pointed out for months/years that what we have simply isn't good enough, and at some point every position in the team needs upgrading.

Now you're saying we just need to get the most out of them though, instead of buying new ones?

But then we "obviously need signings"?

Me no understand...........

I suppose getting the most out of what we have could mean selling for a profit as well - we lose a few for nowt next summer as it stands. Maybe selling Sheehan for a decent amount will fund a new signing- sure we will miss Sheehan but if the new midfielder makes the team work better get it done.

I’ve seen some internet bods talking about Sheehan going to Derby. I wasn’t paying attention for a few months, so would be interested to know whether that rumour came from a credible source?

No credible source, pure speculation.

If I were to rank our players in order of Paul Warneness, Sheehan would not be top.

seem to remember some Derby fan-site saying someone like Sheehan would be ideal for them - that was about a month ago - not sure whether there's been more recent noises?

We are going to be starting the season with what we’ve got. We have to win game after game with it. It’s enough to do that but clearly over the season we will need key additions. But the job of Evatt is to maximise what he’s got and get results with it. He has money to spend, a lot of it as he already has. I don’t think he’s maximised a squad and the results it can get yet. If he’s a decent manager he finds ways to win games and add the quality as we can.

Under good managers we’ve started seasons without everyone we’d like in the door. In 2000 we were patching odds and ends together but found ways to do the job. That’s what is required now. We clearly are not going to have the best team in this league or the best squad this season. That’s the price of failure. Now it’s down to management finding ways to overperform. Rioch did, Allardyce did and Parky did. That will be the requirement. We have to be fitter, more organised, more disciplined and more hungry than every other side. Thats the basic minimum. Cos we aren’t going to match the squads of the top two or three.

I note that our B team is working so well again that we plan once again to loan out the top three talents.

Paying money for players who will never be good enough for the first team and never get a chance. If Matheson isn’t considered able to play first team football now what is the point?

May just be a case of the B team loaning out the players to drive up their value for a future sale.

Can't imagine we'd overly care whether we won a B-team league.

I get your point though, would be nice to see these players have a chance at success at Bolton. Khumbeni for instance has stood out in a midfield that needed a more physical sort.

The B Team is way too new to expect it to return first team regulars yet!!

Bring in players on a free, give them good coaching and loan them out with a view to selling - Good model for now, as we look to incrementally improve it. We can't have everything right now.

That model is fine if we actually get players to the point of being able to sell them. It certainly doesn’t seem as though we’ve arrived at that point yet.

Matheson has not far off senior 50 league appearances to his name. We signed him last season and said he was intended to break through to the first team. Ok he had a year in the B team for rehabilitation after the shock of being released by a premiership club.

Now we are saying he’s not good enough to play for us and we have to loan him out.

These are the sort of players that Allardyce would take in work with them and in many cases be first team regulars within a few months.

Either we aren’t getting the right players or Evatt has no intention of promoting through that route. Either way it’s a royal waste of time imho. Far better an academy if we truly want to see a return. I suspect the B team will lose money.

I'm struggling for Sam's conveyor belt of Matheson alikes that became first team regulars in a few months...

Like Mario Jardel, Blessong Kaku, Akin Bulent, David Thompson, Andy Campbell, Oscar Perez, Fabrice Fernandes, Chris Armstrong rather than world class players Djorkaeff, Okocha, Speed and Hierro?

Ha! They weren't knocked back kids on £500 a week. Genuine lol at the idea Sam would have had any time whatsoever for testing out random kids.

Which is a criticism of the process itself but it's cheap and will take time.
