It's a red with VAR, yeah.
Lolos and McAtee are both 6'2", technical, strong and pretty quick.
They're good additions. McAtee is ahead of Lolos, but has two years on him. Both can improve a lot.

Prior to Lolos' potential injury I'd have said the front three for Tuesday was certain to be him Vic and McAtee, but it may give Dan a chance to impress.
You'd imagine Morley and Matete will get a go in the middle.
It's the back line that's tricky - or possible dead simple, but in a bad way. If anyone except Tutu fit to rotate in?

Evatt said pre match that Forino would ‘get some minutes on Tuesday’. I imagine Johnston too. If you aren’t playing them in these games they won’t get fit.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 9:30 pmPrior to Lolos' potential injury I'd have said the front three for Tuesday was certain to be him Vic and McAtee, but it may give Dan a chance to impress.

Schon absolutely must be rested so I guess Tutu rwb and shift JDC over? Or other way round?

Last season squad would have lost this. We clearly are better this season.
Surprising team-sheet without keeper (Evert continues to play Russian roulette) and no centre back. It suggests that Johnson and Forino are further away from fitness than I thought. We may have to keep Forrester from going on loan as a couple injuries in that position may leave us short. We started well but then fell back to last seasons when they started to press us. We could not cope. Thomasson was once again playing alone in midfield and we struggled. I would have started Ade as I see him as the natural 9 in this system but happy Charles rolled in one which I thought on watching Wanderers TV has trickled past the post.
The changes as others have said changed the game for us. Baxter was superb. Iredale struggled. Schon was impressive going forward and will tackle, but has to work on defensive positioning as a few times, he lost his man in behind him, exposing Iredale to more difficulties.
We now have a strong battling team with good players due to our acquisitions. Have to play them. The difference is clear compared with last season. Now we have what a top team should possess.. strength, aggression, skills, pace. I really hope Lolos was not badly injured as he too seems to have good technical skills and is direct. My fingers are crossed as if he was badly injured, we should have taken him off and play with 10 rather than risking further damage. I hope our medical team made the right call keeping him on.

Anyone know what was with the chicken celebration?
Looking at their threats, they all came down our left. Turning Iredale inside and out. Schon coped well I think. Evatt says Johnston not quite there yet. His return can't come quick enough as Iredale is either, unfit or just not good enough.
Kelman is some player for them btw.

Johnston is fit. Evatt has basically said he’s not playing well enough yet. It will take time from injury to get there.DJBlu wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2024 11:09 amAnyone know what was with the chicken celebration?

I thought Iredale was poor but I also don’t think Toal covered himself in glory either. I do basically think at times we are asking people to do stuff in the wide centre back areas they simply aren’t capable of. Covering huge space in behind - it takes a certain type - and to then also be winning stuff against the strikers and dealing with folk running at you out wide, then winning it in the air on the back stick. It’s a huge set of skills - as Evatt has said we don’t have anyone who had them all.

Re: Full Steam Ahead to Orient (a) 10/08, 17:30
QPR fans seem to hate him, for some reason, but QPR extended his contract 6 months ago. Certainly looks a player.
I don't think that left side will get many tougher tests this season.
Schon improved as the game went on, but struggled to cover at times. Jack is at his best when we have most of the ball, but I don't think anyone we have on the books was going to have fun yesterday. Even a fully fit Johnston would have struggled with the physicality. Forino, maybe...
If Iredale and Schon had played 20+ games together it'd probably have been easier.

Schon is more a winger than a wing back. It’s pretty clear watching him and looking at most of his history.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2024 2:00 pmQPR fans seem to hate him, for some reason, but QPR extended his contract 6 months ago. Certainly looks a player.

However in this system we are asking a wide centre half to defend one on one. The failures from Iredale were mainly in his ability to defend one on one. If it was a full back overlapping and not being tracked constantly I’d look at Schon more. But in the system if you are relying on wing backs to double up with the wide centre back you have a problem. The wide centre halves have to be good enough to defend one on one with space in behind. Or don’t play this system.

Re: Full Steam Ahead to Orient (a) 10/08, 17:30
Sure, but it's a bit reductive. The system massively benefits us in almost every game. In some games teams manage to expose weaknesses.
In this case that weakness wasn't just Jack. That diagonal ball came from a defender who had far too much time on the ball, because Dion and Arfield didn't get the press right.
If you're playing any high line system you have to maintain pressure on the ball. We've changed the press a bit and it will take time for us to get that consistency of pressure.

Just watching Ogbeta have a nightmare for Plymouth. Another one that is stealing a living as a footballer.

I’ve re watched their first goal. It’s just as I initially said dreadful from Iredale. No excuse. He doesn’t misread it he just isn’t switched on. One of my issues with is defensively is we lack that intensity and complete alert anxiety you need to keep clean sheets. Individuals slack off instead of fully being in the game every second. It’s clear Iredale was just day dreaming under the ball.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sun Aug 11, 2024 4:04 pmSure, but it's a bit reductive. The system massively benefits us in almost every game. Behave. It's a hoik into the sun that he massively misreads. He just got under it. It's shite but he's not reading a book. Even manages to trip himself up trying to get back to the ball.
Overall that felt like a really good game to win. There's a change of shape and lots of new players. We were far from great but carried a threat. Had aggression and physicality. The rest you'd hope will come. Some encouraging debuts too. No such thing as a bad away win. Wonder if that will be marked in the "character ledger"...

Our players are Division 3 players. They will make lots of mistakes at this level. Doesnt make them bad players. I see lots of Premier League players make mistakes also. Give them a break. They are human. Its our first game.

Jack has lost some mobility with that knee injury. There's no getting away from it. Johnston will be the same. It takes a long time to adjust and the bigger the player the more challenging it is.
I'm just over 6' and I have done both ACLs. My first game back a player backed into me and turn and I went to go with him. I just fell over. I wanted my leg to turn and my brain just said "no." I'd been so used to protecting it my body wouldn't let itself move that way.
It took me a long time to get totally right. Some people never get back to 100%.
I rate Jack, but he's not as complete as he was. It's much harder for him one-on-one since his injury.
*edit* Having two players on the same side with the same issue isn't ideal.

Should Toal be getting pelters for missing that header that Baxter bailed him out for in the 96th minute?
Re: Full Steam Ahead to Orient (a) 10/08, 17:30
I don't think the pelters are just for the header. Kelman had Iredale on toast all the time he was on the pitch.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 11:26 amShould Toal be getting pelters for missing that header that Baxter bailed him out for in the 96th minute?
