Does the kit man role involve some specialised skills and experience I'm unaware of? Presumably he's just responsible for the kit being present and correct when it is needed? :conf:

That's old school thinking, Twiny. In the modern game, titles are won or lost depending on who you appoint as kit man. Look what's happened at City since they got rid of Moulden's predecessor.
I have no idea what goes on in the Premier League

Bit more to it than that. The players bounce off the kit man and he's normally the one who can dish a bit of stick out and be on the end of it in the dressing room and around the training ground.

They're highly thought of by the players

I'm a long way from lighting my pitchfork and accompanying Insane to the club offices but looking around SM, the Ormerod appointment does come across as pretty grubby and unseemly.

Kit men were usually locals, club stalwarts, who knew their way around a washing machine and had to put up with all the joshing from those upstart players. I wasn't aware of former pros moving into that field of expertise, even less so as assistant to the Kit person.

Win the next half a dozen, including handing Wigan their arse to em, and I'll not give a stuff.

Not trying to denigrate kit men, but I probably couldn't name the one, who's named further up this thread! As for the tea lady, we know she's Doris.

Ted Moulden was a player in our U18s (so not professional as such) before he had to retire through injury in 2018. He wanted to leave football altogether - took a course in barbering, of all things - but we needed an assistant to the then kitman Michael Hawke when Paul Huddy left to join Preston. Huddy then hired Hawke and Evatt gave Ted the top job. Which I guess goes to show you don 't need a PhD in sock-ironing.

I'm actually quite impressed that Ormerod wants to do the job - can't be many assistant kitmen wioth 99 Premier League appearances. That should be the story, but the prevailing weather dictates it's another reason to question Evatt. That wouldn't be nearly so much of a thing if the team was in the top two.

Ormerod wanted the job? Maybe Evatt was just asking for him to help out for a few quid in Ormerod's pocket?

I suspect maybe the fan backlash over the optics probably made a decision on who has what role. Little more palatable to the fans if we're giving him the assistant job rather than 'mates rates'.

I assume he's not doing it against his will. More seriously, Evatt said "if he applied for the job then we have to take it seriously."

For me, there's a big difference between wanting to help and wanting the job. Ormerod may just be looking to help out a friend and get his foot in the door, rather than wanting to clean kits for the enjoyment of it.

While it's fair to assume we're not holding him hostage, it's also fair to assume assistant kitman is not his dream job.

I suspect we can safely move on.

Twitter rumours were Ormerod is on his uppers and keen and Evatt thought he'd be a good fit and also the chance to help out a mate.

Not sure the latter is a particularly great reason or optics, but again, it's the kit man. Not like he's got a contract to supply the kits.

Apparently, we're getting Reebrett shirts next season.

I would really like the club to lean into the humorous side of the Brett Ormerod signing.

Imagine this...

The usual pitch, shirt, grin, but instead we've got Brett Ormerod stood holding up a mud stained shirt next to a Washing Machine.

Was told last night that Ormerod's been doing shifts driving for Evri and wants to get back into footy at any capacity. Fair play to him.

Getting a job off your mate is the complete opposite of fair play!

He's filled a vacancy and is probably absolutely buzzing to be here. I honestly don't see an issue

He knew where the net was, that bloke, so I’m sure he can chip in with helping our strikers as well.

Fcuking Evri? He'll be delivering the bastard kits to Wiggin, if he doesn't just chuck 'em out!
