Yeah, I imagine the Baggies are thinking more "you may know this man from the Premier League" than "you may not really have heard of this man but he has a promotion from the Third".boltonboris wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:25 pmWest Brom will want a bigger name with more of a track record. They're in with a serious chance of the play offs. That will attract some available talent, I'm sure - Suppose they also don't need somebody in the dole queue. They could cherry pick. Do they have the finances to do that? I dunno..Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:15 pm...whereas Alex Neil, who left Stoke 14 months ago, is at the opposite end of that break.boltonboris wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 2:49 pmCan see Mark Robins biding his time waiting for a decent opportunity in the summer. Wonder what Schumacher's waiting for? 5 of the Champo's bottom 7 have already pressed the panic button, the exceptions being the bottom two - Pompey and his old club Plymouth. We don't know how many of those sits-vac he went for - Cardiff, Cov, Hull, Millwall and Oxford all came up while he was available and went to other men. So unless he's thrown his hat in the ring for West Brom, or he's waiting for Preston to tire of Heckingbottom, mahybe he's waiting for a third-tier project with room to grow?
'Schuey' may not be as in-demand as people believe. Amazing how quickly your stock can drop these days, when you weren't a big time player (as spectacularly good as he was as a teen). Maybe he fancies seeing what happens with Rooney if he's still got the keys to a house down there
Plymouth - I guess Schuey did well there but (1) they're in a right state now and (2) I always got the impression both he and Lowe were after moves back up to their "native north-west". Stoke may have dampened that enthusiasm a little but equally maybe it's made him want to really "take charge" of a club rather than being a hired (and fireable) coach at a dog-eat-dog place.
IDK maybe it's Andranik syndrome but it does strike me that he'd be a good fit. I know he was burned by Johnny Wallets forcing him out at Stoke, but working with Markham might remind him more of Neil Dewsnip at Argyle. Anyways, maybe we'll never know.

Off topic but wonder if Walters in on the thinnest of ice after sacking schumacher unexpectedly and binning his hand-picked replacement at the weekend!

We're not aiming to go up, just to try like the rest. We don't make decisions anyway, we just give views and opinions. Many better men in life have come back from initial failures to triumph. "If at first you don't succeed" etc. Have you thought about applying for a job as Lofty the Lion..?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 9:33 pmI don’t really see the argument of ‘give him another game’….we are aiming to go up. Is Evatt taking us top two this season, yes or no? And go from there. Game by game just means you never make a decision.

Re: The ianevattable sacking
If Evatt gets us promoted then he's had a good season. Woeful up until now, but if we go up it's undeniably a good season overall.
Autos, pay-offs, whatever. Don't care.
The issue right now is I don't believe he will do it and haven't for some time. Nor have I believed for some time that he's the man most likely to do it. However, I can't name a manager I think would get us into the autos from here.
It's almost certain it's the play-offs or nowt. If we go up through the play-offs then Evatt has had a good season. Same as last season was amazing for a bit, but was ultimately a bad season because we lost at Wembley.
It can't only work one way.

Not so much a good season as a saved season. He and his boss aimed for automatics. At the halfway point, more or less, we're closer to relegation. (Admittedly only by one goal, but still.)GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:18 pmIt's almost certain it's the play-offs or nowt. He would also be very lucky to have survived after being humiliated at home by Huddersfield, shellacked at Stockport and then, having built up the Wigan home game and noted how confident he was in his players, watched them balls that up as well. I get that in this theoretical universe in which we get promotion, we might actually beat a top-eight team or someone north of Walsall; but it's still not the sort of season to make the Championship tremble in fear.
Worth noting as well that playoff winners often have a harder task adjusting, due to later promotion, quicker transfer turnaround and, often, lower base level of squad. Last season's four promotees to our division - Stockport (1st) are currently 5th, Wrexham (2nd) are 2nd, Mansfield (3rd) are 11th, Crawley (7th) are 21st. It's not always the case - Pompey are 23rd, Oxford 20th, Derby 16th - but look how Southampton are practically falling off the bottom of the Premier League table.
Anyways. That'd be a worry for a different day...

All this is true and I'd have sacked him a while ago, but a manager that gets you promoted out of this division has ultimately done a good job.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:36 pmNot so much a good season as a saved season. That's not to say it was a perfect job or it couldn't have been done better, but this division is a quagmire and if you go up then you celebrate, you don't moan.

It'd be more "worrying" than "moaning". And if he and his boss hadn't shot their mouths off pre-season, then we could all focus on semi losers >> final losers >>>> final winners as a lovely progress/success story.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:39 pmAll this is true and I'd have sacked him a while ago, but a manager that gets you promoted out of this division has ultimately done a good job.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:36 pmNot so much a good season as a saved season. It should be more likely than not that we get into the play-offs. If we do then we have a chance. I'll be focusing on that.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:41 pmIt'd be more "worrying" than "moaning". Evatt's made the rod for his own back and I've no sympathy, but if he gets us up I'll shake his hand.
You don't then sack him, or fret too much. Staying up will be difficult, but getting the chance to try would be a great thing.
Re: The ianevattable sacking
There's a nagging worry in my mind that we seem to be banking on "at least we'll have the play offs" when a) we aren't in them currently and b) have been horrible for big chunks of this season.
I still think we're more likely than not to get in them but there's a chunky double digit chance we don't even make that. Big window this in terms of "even having a chance of being here next year".

Absolutely right that we are far from guaranteed a top 6 spot.Prufrock wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 6:21 pmThere's a nagging worry in my mind that we seem to be banking on "at least we'll have the play offs" when a) we aren't in them currently and b) have been horrible for big chunks of this season.

That's the "path of hope", but if we don't improve we won't make it. Dead simple.
Dramatic improvement needed just to finish in the mix.

Re: The ianevattable sacking
To be fair the bottom two slots are wide open, given the contenders' erratic form; right now I wouldn't rule out Richie Wellens' Orient, the only team outside the top four not to be regularly standing on rakes.
Worth considering though that any team finished 5th or 6th will probably, amid the huge stress of the playoffs, have to overcome two of the following:
• Phil Parkinson's Wrexham
• Mike Duff's Huddersfield (quite possibly bolstered by Joe Taylor up front)
• a Wycombe side that have shown time and again they can blow sides away (and seem to particularly like playing away, too).

Re: The ianevattable sacking
This is true. And we could. We're probably not troubling the top 2 places.
We need to part ways. Sharon needs better advice. We need better system or better players for the system we want to play. We need tackling and defending to be a thing.
We need to fcuk off spinning the narrative of system/possession crap unexciting football.
Spare us, more of this bollocks.
Oh. Happy New Year, Wanderers.

Nope: he’s been appointed Stoke manager. So we can cross him off the list.boltonboris wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 2:49 pmCan see Mark Robins biding his time waiting for a decent opportunity in the summer. Been at it a long time without a break now
Re: The ianevattable sacking
When does Sharon sack him? Do you think they’ve defined how far we need to be off the playoffs? It’s maddening. We’re now 5 points from the playoffs with a 0 GD, and in a melee with fecking Stockport, Orient and Mansfield.

When do the Swiss sack Sharon Brittan - hopefully very soon.
We are run by two clowns, Evatt on the pitch - SB off the pitch.

It won't be a matter of Sharon keeping Evatt in post against the wishes of the rest of the board.
She doesn't have that amount of authority, for one.
