I think the claim that he can play as a wing back might be an error. The BN says he's a centre half who can play as a left back and Eddie Howe described him as those things too. Neither mentioned him being a wing back.

Scrap that - it's Evatt who's said he's also a wing back!
I'd be pretty happy, if we signed some dude and just said "this is where he plays and where he's strongest and it's why we signed him."

I think Iredale had the "anywhere on the left-side" tag too, along with a few others, I'd struggle to say he was a LWB, albeit I thought he tried hard for us.

Thanks for clarifying. And can he play up front or is he a better keeper?
Ha. He's mostly a centre back. I'd assume we've signed him as that, unless we switch to a back four.

If we wanted to play Tutu as a right back then Murphy would be exactly the type of left back you'd want to balance that out.

Tutu pushing up almost as a winger and Murphy allowing them some defensive security with the extra man, whilst still being capable of bombing on.

We had a plan - let's call it plan A, we worried that plan A wasn't working, so we didn't change it, in favour of better plan A, it's still not working, so after spending a couple of windows recruiting for the only Plan A we had, to make it a better plan A, we now float the idea of a possible plan B, after signing two people and letting two go, neither who were playing significant parts.

It's a sure-fire winner!

You were doing really well with "mostly a centre back" for the other bloke and all...

Ask David Moyes to describe how he used Leighton Baines and Tony Hibbert some time.

We don't have David Moyes managing us! We have the defensively clueless.

Moyes' best Everton sides would be a good touchstone for the squad we have if we want to go to a back 4.

High press, narrow front 3/4, technical midfielders.

Moyes’ best Everton sides would out run their opponents and physically impose themselves on most. Allied to being very very solid and organised.

We are several transfer windows off having a side that is close to that.

Running, yes. Moyes left the majority of physicality to his centre backs.

His first task when he came in was to get pace into his back line (which we have) and technical ability into his midfield (which we also have).

Arteta, Pienaar, Osman, etc...those were the players Moyes wanted involved in his midfield.

He usually had a physical out somewhere in the final third and he brought in centre backs who could play a high line and defend one-on-one on the run.

At one stage his most physical midfielder was Phil Neville, who played next to Arteta. A decent tackler, Neville, but hardly a midfield monster. In front of them were Cahill, Pienaar and Osman.

If we put out a League One version of that midfield you'd say it was nowhere near solid enough.

They defended by pressing from the front, which is what Evatt's better sides also did.

When he was able to add a player who was extremely physical AND technical he did it - but Moyes' first request of his midfield, after work rate, was ability with the ball.

I mean their best finish had Carsley in didn’t it? And Kilbane and Cahill. I’d not call Arteta a shrinking violet either.

Cahill, Carsley are two types I think we’ve been crying out for.

When we were at "our best", we did press from the front teams were still bypassing our MF on too many occasions.

I still remember it fondly. We were good under Evatt but we flattered to deceive. When the game plan worked it worked really well. When it didn't we weren't able to change it significantly enough to fix it.

The best teams find a way. Were likely a league two Spurs. Bottle jobs that occasionally play teams off the park.
