Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
Worthy - big club, immediate job, below where we should be, talented players
DSB - style of football/fans off seats, back three or four, Wembley, promotion soon as possible. impressed with Sharon/Chris, Ian did a great job
Domingos - sleeping giant/huge potential, take club to where it should be, fantastic fans, Toughsheet a fortress
JSF - facilities great/higher division, fantastic ground, tough place to come, fans off their seats, tough but expansive football
Bijou - 18,000 ST holders, JJ Okocha
Insano - massive club
Think we had most of it covered! Not sure he got round to JJ though!

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
I still think this is a free hit half season for Schuey. He won’t see it like that and praise the lord he doesn’t. But promotion from here even though Jules has worked a miracle and got us looking upwards and firmly in the mix - is still a relative long shot. Not impossible or unlikely just I’d say less likely we don’t than we do in terms of probability.
I don’t think next season is the same though. The bottom line for me is we’ve got to be looking to be out of league one after next season. If we go up this time it’s a bonus.
What I like is that he’s come in and literally said all the right things. He’s nailed everything. Almost like maybe he’s done his homework and knows what to say or someone has done it for him. I also like that he’s likable and I don’t think I’ve heard a single fan who is unhappy with him. It’s brought the club and fanbase right back together and I think that’s big. I’ve felt increasingly distanced from the club in the last few years it simply grew and Jules ironically did the most to fix that with his approach but I think Schuey takes that on now.
He seems very grounded. What we don’t need imo is fans going round doing the whole HMS piss the league nonsense. We are not there. And frankly we need to maintain the plucky underdog approach Jules instilled because that’s where I think Bolton succeed. He seems plucky and confident rather than arrogant and I hope that rubs off generally. His focus on sides that work hard is also important. As Iles has said Bolton fans probably don’t care that much about style of football in terms of long ball vs passing but they want and demand a team who will put their bodies on the line and run harder, further and faster than their opponents. This is something that for two or three years I think we’ve overcomplicated. And Schumacher is clearly aware. We want fighters - and Jules showed this squad is capable of that.

Kyle's an interesting one, as he doesn't seem to have worked with Schuey before. Hughes has usually been his sidekick, but the job titles are a little confusing...KeyserSoze wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:17 amMark Hughes and Richie Kyle join the backroom staff.

He’s another boyhood Everton fan who’s the same age as Schuey, so I wonder whether maybe they know each other from school days?

Yeah that's certainly how I read it, which is interesting in itself that Hughes has been surpassed. Or maybe he prefers being on the grass.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:37 amI think if we convert to normal titles…

Yep. It might also simply be that someone with more experience and better qualified in Kyle was available. Certainly seems a pretty interesting choice. I’m sure Schuey must know him in some way to have done it so quickly but equally feels encouraging it’s not just the ‘usual suspects’.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:40 amCheers - will read over lunch al deskoThe_Gun wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:36 amKyle has an interesting back story, as detailed in the below Athletic article, and seems like he might be a very good addition.

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
Think it's easy to say most fans are happy at this end, but how many of the 18,000 ST's will have seen more than a dozen games v teams managed by him? I suspect it's pretty small. I've probably only seen the ones v us and maybe the odd highlights. My hope is that he's pragmatic, I'm not against possession, but use it rather than be a slave to it, be entertaining, know when to attack and how to defend and deffo hard work, lots of it. "Possession" should be some old dusty book from the 1700's before you hang the witch as they found out in the early 1980's in Italy and ended up needing to import talent from world-wide as most of the home-grown crew could only fanny around with it which was pretty endemic, but not pretty to watch. Late Evatt reminded me a lot about it.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 9:52 amI still think this is a free hit half season for Schuey. He won’t see it like that and praise the lord he doesn’t. Yeah don’t disagree. Fans can be happy for appointments that work out to be terrible. My grand thesis is we can never know - there are too many variables in managerial appointments. Managers can work well in some places and not others. They might have been lucky in their past jobs. They may not recreate the same conditions. But it’s probably better to start with fans happy than fans queuing up with burning pitchforks - generally.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:48 amThink it's easy to say most fans are happy at this end, but how many of the 18,000 ST's will have seen more than a dozen games v teams managed by him? Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
I'm not sure we'll see much in the way of change for a good few matches yet. Free kicks that go into the box and attempting to win second balls on set pieces would be a great start. It'll be interesting to see how and if Toal and Santos fit into his ideas. Would anyone want Santos back in at this stage? Toal was one of the biggest drags on our possession being turned into transition, so it'll be fascinating to see if that changes with different coaching ideas and different game plans.
If we could get 3 points tomorrow, that would be a huge boost to the squad's psychology at the right time. Wycombe and Stockport have thin squads and will start to fall away a little now IMO, particularly if Kone does leave (£6 million for a league one striker with one decent season makes Charles look like a bargain) and Huddersfield are as fragile as we have been. The play offs are there for the taking. With 27 games left, the autos are not impossible, but that would take an amazing last 72 hours of the transfer window and personally, I just can't see us making up that ground now.
The future's bright........possibly........

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
Rico depends I guess on any interest, both signing a new deal Vs money in. But if he stays I'd expect both him and Toal to play a big part. Any manager has to back themselves to get the most out of a 6'5" monster who is also quick and comfortable on the ball. Back themself to get a similar jump to what we've seen from the others. And Toal will be fundamental I'd think. He'd have been made for the last two games, and hopefully Schumacher isn't going to ask any of them to do things they can't.

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
As others have said, sometimes the obvious decision isn't the right one. But it was the obvious decision and fair play to them all for getting it done. Hopefully it works out but I'm sure the buzz will continue for a little while yet.

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
It's great they've got his key staff sorted immediately. When he did the interview saying "WE are taking Andy, Andrew and Jules with us to Reading" I started to wonder if that'd got done behind the scenes, despite the local chatter in Accy.
Management, like the rest of footy, is a team game.
Kyle is very highly rated, so I'm pleased to have him in.

Re: Who's the Rioch to Evatt's Neal?
Here's the thing. If all Santos could do was put his foot on the ball annd pass it sideways, he'd be a very limited player. But he's also (at his best) very fast, good at heading clear (as long as he's not man-marking) and strong enough to hold off most strikers.Prufrock wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 12:07 pmRico depends I guess on any interest, both signing a new deal Vs money in. I think Rico has suffered from being Evatt's Play Out From the Back Poster-boy, perhaps the key memory being Wembley; but it's not his fault Oxford had closed off his lanes, nor is it his fault that Evatt didn't have another idea. Hopefully those days have gone, and if we shear off that layer of tactical expectatipn, there's still a worrthwhile player there - maybe one who can play even better without those worries.
Toal's similar, but less so. He's built for the battle, he's tall, not terrible on the ball – not good enough for Evattball's underlapping outside centre-backs, but again that's likely gone.
I'm not sure there's many games (in this division) where we would thrive creatively by having three KickItHeadItClearIt centre-backs. But it's good to have the options.
