That was rather the point I was making.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 4:48 pmThe problem I have with the "never have the ball" philosophy, is it is always incorrect. 100% of the time. And they only need it once to beat you 1-0. It's a fallacy.
It absolutely does help, but we have to solidify at the back. If you give the opposition easy chances then they just have to turn the ball over in dodgy areas and they will get goals.
With us it's often where we give it away that hurts us. As with Thommo losing it centrally for it to be hooked through the middle to let Mansfield get right at the defence.
That "straight at them" ball tends to come from us losing it in those central areas and Randall should help with that.
It won't help us defend set pieces. We've conceded nearly as many goals from set pieces in 23 games as we did in the whole of last season.

We're saying broadly the same thing. My understanding of Randall is he's probably good at the keep it off them when he's got it, part and the comments in the Posh Telegraph were broadly "never going to get it back off any fcuker when they have it"...He and the improved (but injured) Josh, would fcking terrify me. I don't have stats but I've seen the straight at them ball come from both central and wide with far too much regularity.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 5:10 pmThat was rather the point I was making.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 4:48 pmThe problem I have with the "never have the ball" philosophy, is it is always incorrect. 100% of the time. The trouble is that our defending is designed to push the ball wide to let us get bodies back, which means it will always give away corners even when it's working properly.
So if you can't defend corners you're a bit buggered.
As has been said on here many times...basics.
Rotherham will happily test us on set-pieces all afternoon.

And goals when they don't bother with the corner route but just cross it from open play because we backed off from the half way to the corner-flag! It's leaky like a colander.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 5:35 pmWe have got to be better at the back.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 5:25 pmWe're saying broadly the same thing. Feet back on the ground for a second...Etete and Collins both missed out through injury. We're in bother if they are out for an extended period.

But not on it. Pulled up in the warm up and was replaced by Sharples.

Ah injured in the warm up. It’s hardly a shock, looking at his record. But there is now no point in saying Markham has done a good job. He clearly has not. The recruitment has not done what it should and we need to change our ways.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 5:44 pmBut not on it. Pulled up in the warm up and was replaced by Sharples.

Carlos Mendes Gomes joins Chris Forino in the Bs this afternoon.
EDIT they both played 60 minutes, which seems very pre-planned.

If he can get and stay fit CMG to me seems very much a Schuey player. Very much.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 2:01 pmCarlos Mendes Gomes joins Chris Forino in the Bs this afternoon.

Agreed, I'm very excited to see him in this system and think he'll finally be able to show us his attacking quality. Hoping he can get back to match fitness quickly. I guess he's got a chance of being in the matchday squad on Saturday if he got through 60 minutes unscathed today.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 3:35 pmIf he can get and stay fit CMG to me seems very much a Schuey player. Re: Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Bare Bones....
Agreed, but it's not exactly easy to get on our bench at the moment, let alone get off it... Lolos was excluded from the matchday 18 at Shrewsbury – then against Orient, Joel Randall was benched without being beckoned, even when we were chasing the game.
The Orient game was the first in which Schumacher didn't have any players suspended and/or cuptied, but his options were still temporarily restricted by Toal and Gethin having minor knocks. If they're back, it's even harder to get a spot in the 18.
None of this is bad news - it's just competition for places, and Schumacher has been so focused on picking the right players (based on opposition and training) that he's even been happy to drop Collins to the bench. I'm just saying that we don't necessarily need to rush players in.
I do agree though that CMG may be a very good "hybrid 10" for Schuey - not a winger or a centre-forward trying to fit in, but a good player in something like his best position.

I think CMG is more likely to play in Schumachers system than Schon to be honest. I'm a big fan of Schon. I like his endavour, his directness and he looks a threat, but he's got very little end product for the positions he finds himself in.
That's something he needs to improve on

Again, agreed. My quibble with CMG is when rather than whether he'll get a chance.boltonboris wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 4:33 pmI think CMG is more likely to play in Schumachers system than Schon to be honest. Szabi seems a really good lad, I like him a lot. Is he a 10? I'm not sure, particularly on the right of the two: two or three times in Saturday's first half he let himself down with a right-footed touch. As you say, it's end product, and that's even more vital in the 10 role than at wingback....

I just think Szabi is a plain old fashioned left winger. Whether that's in a 4-4-2, or 4-3-3 or Whatever. I wouldn't have him in the middle and don't think he's effective on the right, as he's not a good striker of the ball. Pointless him coming inside.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 5:04 pmAgain, agreed. What he is good at, is underlapping. He does it sharply, quickly and incisively and seems to get on with Collins and McAtee, so 1 of them can pull out to the left and double up... But then there's 1 less player in the box. Which obvs will not help his end product optic..

I would have CMG down as a winger? Play him where Schon or Tutu are? That for me is his role. To a tee. And I think he might possess greater end product than the others mentioned. But I think he will only be introduced slowly anyway.

I certainly don't see CMG as an effective 10. Evatt experimented a bit with him there in a couple games before injury but he never was a fit for his system. He is a winger. Not a wing back... a winger who is skillful, and should thrive under Schuey. In fact, I believe he will be our x factor in our drive to playoffs and promotion once he stays fit.

I agree, which is why I think Schumacher will see him ahead of Schon if we're going to play wingers - He might come back into the fold and be absolutely shite - He didn't really impress me before his injuries, but SS has been vocal about how he rates himBWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 6:35 pmI would have CMG down as a winger? Yeah but he could play instead of either…tutu needs protecting and frankly I think is a different option to Schon but brings his own issues. So it might be a mix and match. Schon offers much more inside and workrate tutu offers the pace. It’s about which role CMG might fill and what we need I think.boltonboris wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 4:07 pmI agree, which is why I think Schumacher will see him ahead of Schon if we're going to play wingers - He might come back into the fold and be absolutely shite - He didn't really impress me before his injuries, but SS has been vocal about how he rates himBWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 6:35 pmI would have CMG down as a winger? Schon I suspect might end up in the centre of midfield. In a few years.
