On the game….
Sheehan, Morley, CMG, Schon and Toal - plus the other long terms all out.
Tutu may be out - sounds likely he won’t make it as just jogging on grass as it stands.
Lord knows what system we are going to play here.

Things are really bad Gun. You have named 11 including Murphy who they say is touch and Go, and Dempsey who is feeling his way back. Maybe a space for Randall or Santos or Lolos. Thats about it... oh.. forgot about Etete who looks way off it. Not looking very promising.

We've got to play Randall or why sign him. Give the lad a chance. Play Collins and McAtee one each half instead of both together. Nothing to lose.

We don’t have to play anyone. We need to put out whoever gives us the best chance of winning games. If Dempsey isn’t fit enough to start, then play Randall, otherwise I’d say Kyle is the better option.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Wed Apr 16, 2025 10:10 pmWe've got to play Randall or why sign him. We put the strongest possible side out for this one. If we lose then the rest of the season is a dead rubber (probably already is), and then its just about Schuey looking players and options.

We're not jigsaw puzzle pieces, and professional players should be adaptable to play where needed. I'm fed up of technology football and cunning plans and plots. None of it has got us any better than we were and injuries and luck can only be blamed for so much. Tell them to get out and earn their wages as a squad supporting each other with some desire. Dempsey in particular is experienced enough to play anywhere and one good game from Randall can win over our flaky fans. Get in there.

I wonder who takes set pieces with no Sheehan, Morley or Schön?

It's almost ridiculous the question needs to be asked. Sure they might not top bin one, but we don't see too many of them anyhow. We're talking professional footballers needing to get a football, under no pressure, somewhere near where it's intended.Bertie Wooster wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 1:06 pmI don't think that any fans would notice any difference whoever takes them, they are normally shite with those 3 taking them - especially corners.

I've watched a few games back recently from the White Hot Years. It was very noticeable that the likes of McGinlay were able to reliably put the ball in the right area. Sure, there wasn't always someone attacking the right area, but if a 38 goal a season striker can do it, then sure a specialist wide player can. I suspect part of the problem is there is so much emphasis on athleticism these days that football is almost secondary.

The other thing about that era - and I’ve also been reminiscing down the YouTube rabbit hole - is we weren’t the biggest or strongest side. We weren’t the fastest or technically best. What we had was unbelievable spirit in those players - they ran through brick walls for Rioch and understood what playing for Bolton was.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: ↑Thu Apr 17, 2025 3:07 pmI've watched a few games back recently from the White Hot Years. You look at the play offs in 95 - we finished that season on a little bit of a downer. Running out of energy, legs and bodies following the league cup Wembley run and maybe a little momentum. Obviously just one automatic promotion place and we’d run Boro close most of the season and probably were it not for Wembley would have pipped them - with a side that cost a fraction of Robsons mob.
But anyway we went to wolves depleted and got absolutely battered. A brilliant or lucky McAteer strike kept us in the tie but even with that we did well to not be out of it.
Then we faced Wolves at home with again ever depleting resources and clearly some tiredness in the group. It had every single thing pointing to a big uncompromising Graham Taylor side coming and brushing us off. Indeed some of the famous pre match commentary suggested that was what would happen. And the game was horrid. A battle that didn’t really suit us. Yet we found a way to edge ahead and somehow stave off a wolves onslaught. And win. But looking back that wasn’t just against the odds it was against quite significant odds.
Then obviously reading and Wembley even more difficult.
Those games though were tests of character that I think even some of our best sides down the years might struggle to pass. I do think though watching it highlights the massive gulf in even basics between this side and historic ones. Just in basic mentality and acceptance of the task at hand and a refusal a sheer refusal to give up ever.
I don’t think we really even felt or realised at the time - just how much against the odds it was that Bolton would do what they did. Let alone in the circumstances they did against what were let’s be fair much bigger more established clubs than us at the time.

How many kids/B teamers will we need to put on the bench today - 3/4? I think we’ve only got 14 fit outfield players even if Murphy is good to go. If he isn’t then we might have to start one of the kids.

What’s happened to Sharples-Ahmed?

Captains the B team most weeks as far as I can see. He was only really getting a chance in the trophy under Evatt, and I suppose he’s down the pecking order when it comes to more important games. I’m slightly surprised we didn’t send him out on loan in Jan.

Pit in the stomach for this one.
We've got to win, but we've lost most weeks that we've said that. I see today being no different.
It's our old yeller moment.
