A website is linking us with Sam Dalby - striker released by Wrexham.
One to really set the pulse racing, eh?
15 goals for Dundee United last season. It’s Scotland I know….
Yeah, that’s actually not too bad. Again, kind of following the mould of a peak aged player unproven outside of the lower leagues, but at least there would be no fee involved this time.
Yep agreed. It’s the no fee thing I think. Clearly a player who at one point was rated much higher than this league but it hasn’t quite happened for him at Leeds or Watford. But I guess this would be a Harkin example of a player who ‘hasn’t done it yet but might’. And a free is different I think to spending considerable money. Though I would understand the reservations.

If we're being uncharitable, Dalby has had one good season - two if you count scoring 9 in 36 at fifth-tier level. But, and it's a big but, we're back in the freebie bargain bins. That is, as BWFCi says, very different to spending six- or even seven-figure fees (at which IMO we've recently had far more misses than hits anyway). The other teams reported to be interested suggest we're (1) not alone and (2) about right. Oh and he's 6ft 3.

I should say a few twitterers have got very excited about the idea of us loaning Nathan Lowe from Stoke, grabbing the idea that he'll be loaned to L1 (after 15G + 5A in 22 league-two games for Walsall last autumn/winter) and adding in the Schumacher-Stoke connection. To be clear, I think he would be a fine loanee target for us, but as I say I'm really unsure how many favours Schuey will get from the DoF who ousted him, reportedly after a dressing-room bust-up. Hopefully Jonny Walters (for it is he) would be grown-up enough to think we're a good club for the kid's development, and Schuey would be realistic enough not to regard it as a non-starter.

Bolton have missed out on Ryan Ledson, the defensive midfielder from Preston we have been linked with recently. He has signed a three year contract with Huddersfield.

I don’t think this is one to shed any tears over. He’s likely going to be on big wages, and doesn’t really seem the profile of player we need in that position.

I maintain that we should be going either for a big athletic type, or an experienced and classy type, like Ollie Norwood, to help us manage games better.

Do we know if SS was even interested in him ?, if not then we haven't really missed out as we were probably never in for him.

Unless someone knows, we'll never know! The fact that BN is saying was linked by "national media," I'm not sure lends any credence to us actually being interested...

The thing about strikers for me is that 1) we probably aren’t going to have the money to get a proven goalscorer at this level and 2) the right type is more important than anything else.

I think we’ve basically done very very poor work with strikers and we’ve spent a lot of money on them.

1) Adeboyejo ploughed a lone man front role at Burton and got into the box for deliveries. We spent £750K or thereabouts on him to run the channel like Dion was. Didn’t work. Unsurprisingly:

2) Collins played a wide of a front three at Bristol Rovers. We spent money to play him up front and you can’t say it’s not worked given the goals he scores. But he needed a particular setup and type of partner he’s never had and one feels that he scores goals at a cost of the broader team shape.

3) McAtee we spent a lot on where he’d played off a front man or from a wide area for Barnsley expecting him to be a 10 in a diamond midfield - not unlike the efforts to try and make Dapo do that (and Dapo is a much better player) they failed miserably as it’s a difficult role to play for anyone and McAtee was in no way suited to it. He sort of like Collins feels like a striker who isn’t one and needs a certain setup and partner.

Forget how good or bad they were but that’s a contrast to Dion, Bod, Baka and Eoin Doyle even Miller. All strikers. And you knew what they were and what they’d do and that was it.

There is a spectrum of ‘well we’d sign him if he was available to I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the club’.

And I suspect he’s one we’d have taken but probably not for what sort of wages he would want.

Agree on most of that. I could quibble on the odd thing (Vic often played on the right of a three at Burton) but overall you're correct that our strikeforce recruitment has been an almost unrelenting failure – I'd say since summer 2022:
Etete 0/10
McAtee 4/10
Collins 7/10
Nlundulu 0/10
Adeboyejo 4/10
Jerome 2/10

Add in our "attacking midfield" recruits and it doesn't get any better - Randall, Lolos, Arfield, Mendes Gomes, Shoretire...

In January 2022 we signed Dion, Fossey, Morley, Trafford, Bod, Sadlier and Dempsey. Now that's a window.

Some websites linking us to Notts County's Alassana Jatta. Plymouth - with Dickinson - said to have bid £750k for him in January, Entering last year of his contract.

A claim that we're in "advanced talks" with Teddy Sharman-Lowe: https://www.footballinsider247.com/excl ... rman-lowe/

How's Brett Ormerod shaping up? He gonna be fit and ready to go for the start of next season?

Etete was for the here and now and Ormerod was for the future... right? right?

Named in the U21s squad for this summer’s Euros, so must be decent. Not sure he’s likely to play much, mind.

There are clearly not enough Jim's (Traff gets a close miss, McDonagh takes the accolade), Franks's, Bert's and Sam's. A Kev can go either way bit like Daves and a JJ is fine. But fcuking Teddy?

If ye olde names is what you like, the final XI of last season wasn't bad, including a Luke, George, Samuel, George again, Alex, Joel, John and Aaron. Later supplemented by a Joshua and a David, among others.

Not old names, proper ones! Brian Smith would've tackled like a fanny if he'd had the misfortune to have been called "Josh." Can you imagine watching Frank and Kev and thinking "they'd be better as Aaron's?" Inconcievable.
