Beckham holds the key!

The man has always been good for slating, especially of the field, but if we are going to win this thing then he's the key. I don't know if anyone else agree's but I don't think I have ever seen Beckham in such fantastic form for England. Ok, these last couple of friendlies were not against the World class opposition he will come up against in the WC but he seam's to have the Midus touch at the minute and that could be the deciding factor in our upcoming games.

Not just from set pieces, but from open play, his range of passing of late has been astonishing! I really think though that it is important that Neville is fit enough to play. The two have always had a great partnership down the right and Neville can do something that Hargreaves can't and that's cross the ball. This has allowed Beckham to move more central in the past when needed, though I am hoping he can stick to the flank and whip in those undefendable balls for the likes of Crouch, Terry, Lampard et al.

Love him or hate him, he's a man that can deliver under pressure and deliver well!!

Sorry SOTWA, this is complete tripe.

Beckham is crap. OK he hits in a good corner every now and then, but the last time he scored one himself was 2001 v Greece.

No goals for England from dead balls in 5yrs is not good, granted he makes assists - though how many 'great' performances has he put in in MAJOR games? None, he goes missing in every one.

He cannot tackle, sprint, head the ball, use his left foot, or go past people, he is very easy to defend against (hence you only ever notice his free kicks), gives the ball away too often, and is one of the worst in a midfield full of diving cheaters.

Beckham is part of the reason why I dislike our national side.

Umm that's a load of crap Batman. becks scored in the qualifiers this past year too. I a agree soldier. If Beckham has a good tournament than England could go far, and I am encouraged by his play.

I think we have a lot of hypothetical World Class players. But it's still only Beckham and Owen who have proved they are capable of delivering World Class performances at international level. He is a class act and arguably our most influential player. I also think he's grown into his captain's role and is capable of leading by example.

As Comrade Workethic did in the other thread, it's still worth harking back to the Greece game. It was quite simply the best captain's performance we'll ever see for England. Until Gerrard replicates his Liverpool form, we won't see the likes of it again.

I think far from Beckham going missing Batman, thus far players like Lampard and Gerrard have been the ones prone to disappearing when the midfield battle called for heroics.

Eleven men on the field in England shirts pulling their tripes out is what I want to see. Forget the superstars, let's have a team performance with guts. We have the talent, we need attitude and commitment. And we have to do it from game one. I want to see Ferdinand (who wouldn't even be there if I had my way) with sweat dipping off him and not trying the Mr Cool, "when in doubt give it the goalie" attitude. I want to see him earn that shirt. To save individualising, I want to be proud of ENGLAND.

SOTWA is right about Beckham's form of late, he seems to be doing something right although one criticism I've had of Sven in the past is that he shouldn't be afraid to drop his captain when his play isn't 100% which it clearly hasn't been at certain times. I think that the 'Becks being the first name on the teamsheet' mentality hasn't done Beckham's form any good and that all players should have to fight for their place in the squad.

Oh, and for the record can I just say "COME ON ENGLAND!!"

Have to agree that Golden Balls seems to have the golden touch at minute.
Also agree with Tango Dancer about #Ferdinand - over rated and tends to lose concentration at crucial moments.

Sorry Batman but you are talking nonsense here in my view, beckham is class and how you can say he never turns up in big games is beyond me, He gives his all and has so much quality any team in world football would have him because hes world class, something we dont have at the reebok in any outfield position

I've been one of Beckham's biggest critics over the last few years, however I agree with SOTWA that he is going to be our key player in Germany.

The fact is that the guy is in the form of his life - according to all accounts he has been one of the best midfielders in Spain this year and his form in the friendlies has been terrfic. I feel that the main reason for this is his fitness. In the last two major competitions he has been at 65% max - and such a key part of Beckham's games is his work-rate. In the last two competitions he couldn't match his work rate as he was unfit and as a result he looked poor.

This is Beckham's tournament - with the emmergance of Lennon and SWP likely to move, the chances are he's not going to be around at the next one. He HAS to deliver.

I 1st thought that Rooney's injury would kill us, but we might just be better than ever anyways.

Whats surprising me more than anything else is that we have pretty much all our first XI England players ready for action in this world cup, whereas in the past we've had Neville, Ferdinand and Gerrard missing.

Beckham's form lately has been impressive but it still remains to be seen whether he can do it in the upcoming competitive games.

Well, it looks like my opinion is holding water at the minute (sorry batty) Two of the three goals we have scored so far have come from undefendable balls from Beckham, and he still looks like he has yet to reach top gear.

This in my opinion is what makes a World class player, the ability to pull off the incredible from out of nowere and with no warning (as Gerrard showed today)

It really doesn't matter if you are having a crap game, if you have that ability in your locker it makes you a very dangerous player. How many assists is that for Beckham in his last four matches?

If we end up qualifying top of the group by the end of tonight I would like to see him along with Gerrard rested. I think Sven should play Lampard in the hope that he can bulge the net, it would do him a world of good.

As for Batman's point about Beckham not being able to go round players. He doesn't have to, he let's the ball go around players for him! Look at Lennon today, he was great at running at players and going round them, but he had nothing at the end of it. If there is nothing at the end of a great run, what's the point of it?
