Ugh, can't believe I wasted a vacation day on that ****. The first goal was an absolute disaster. I mean we had packed the midfield, obviously looking to contain the Czechs, and what happens? Eddie Lewis goes AWOL within 5 minutes and gives Rosicky a year to set up the cross. Hell, I could have put in a cross like that with as much time as he had. And when you've got Koller in the box, forget it. Hard to believe that in a country with 280 million people, and a team with a ****load of left footed players we can't produce a left back. It's like Bolton all over again. The second goal was just a great shot, and the third goal was the somewhat inevitable result of pushing up to try and get one back.

Arena needs to make some serious line-up changes. I don't know why he included Beasley to begin with, he looked poor in the last few friendlies and he can't play on the right. Go with Bocanegra, he's inconsitant but better defensively than Lewis. Drop Mastroeni, too late for defensive tactics now. Give Dempsey and Johnson a chance. I would even think about dropping Keller for Hahnemann, Keller looked off the pace. Americans, what would you think of a 4-3-3?

-------------------- Keller -------------------
Cherundolo - Onyewu - Pope - Bocanegra
---- Dempsey --- Reyna --- Convey ------
----- Donovan - McBride - Johnson -------

Does Beasley still play well on the left? I'd put him there. The main problem besides the several mistakes that lead to the opening goal is Donovan. He couldnt do anything up front without service. I'd say we need a 4-5-1 from Sam's book. (Just more emphasis on attack)

just another example at how the US media hypes Donovan as the "next big thing" without understanding the sport.

How does a keeper look "off the pace"?

Now that is some BS. Donovan has earned the hype (if that's possible) due to his previous performance. I dont judge players on one bad game, he's scored before in the World Cup. He was played out of position/denied service.

I thought he looked slow to react, umm.............off the pace? I always thought Friedel was the best GK the US had. Howard would be my second choice.

Fools.

Their situation mirrors ours in a way; unfashionable side, fighting above their weight, always fighting against preconceptions from those without the sense to see how well they are actually doing. Personally I hope the USA do very well.

I dont think you can say that yet. They lost ONE game. They made it to the Quarterfinals last time, is that not competing at the top level? They arent a top 10 side. I have said that many times. they are however a top 15 side. How many teams are better than the Czech Republic? Their draw does them no favors. However if England had such a draw we would all be whinging.

i agree..top 10 NOT, but at least in the top 15. the US "socker" is improving and against many teams they fare pretty well. i for one was expecting a draw or close loss, a mere hiccup, we'll see how they do against Italy.

I think it will serve us well to know we have to go out for a win against Italy. The problem with the bunker mentality formation Arena put out against the Czechs is that once that early goal went in, it was entirely unsuitable to pull one back. It's like they said after the Trinidad game, losing a man often makes teams play better. I think that is because their mission has become a lot more clear. When you go down a man at 0-0, there's no more balance between attack and defense, you need to defend. Sort of the same thing for the U.S. Keeping a clean sheet is irrelevant. We must win, and we can field that team accordingly. Start some more attack minded players (Dempsey, Johnson) and throw everything at them.

Completely agreed. I am looking forward to a Johnson start.

I am also looking forward to an Eddie Johnson start . . . in a Bolton shirt . . .

I know we'd like it, but I am not sure everyone else would agree. Hopefully though he'll at least get a goal v Italy.

I was very disappointed with the US showing to be honest (it's a bit of a dark secret of mine, but I'd like to see them do well). From the MLS I have watched, I really thought that the US would build on the success of 2002 and would prove to be a very fit and strong team who are difficult to beat. I suppose part of the problem is that this team is quite a bit less experienced at this level than the team four years ago.

On the other hand, the Czechs look like a very tidy outfit - arguably the world's best 'keeper, some solid defenders, a Peter Crouch with some muscle, and some skilful attackers.

I'll be out in San Francisco this weekend. I doubt I'll see any Wanderers supporters though.
