Oh, this is wonderful. Cheating , diving, fisticuffs and headbutts. The two biggest diving cheats, Roben Bastard and Robin Van Persil get off scott free. Ref gave so may yellow cards out in the first half that half the teams were living dangerously by half time. Great entertainment though and Deco was immense. Roll on the the next round.

What are you talking about? He was clearly elbowed in the face, he had the welt on his cheek to prove it. Or are you suggesting he elbowed himself in the face? Whether or not it was intentional and worthy of a booking is of course arguable, but I didn't see Figo do anything except get drilled.warthog wrote:Or to put it another way, he cheated.Panda wrote:Figo was very clever with his play to get the Dutch player sent off.
Shocking performance by the referee. The thing is, most of the bookings he handed out were worthy of a card. But he decided to go with FIFA's World Cup 2006 policy of referees ruining games and started to hand out some insane bookings, such as the one for Ricardo, or Deco's booking for getting wrestled to the ground. This has to top the Uruguayan in the U.S. / Italy match as worst performance so far, at least that one didn't turn into a brawl.
By the way, terrible decision by Scolari keeping Costinha on. He could have gotten sent off earlier for that sliding tackle, but apparently the referee just wasn't paying attention (another strike against him). At that point it was obvious to me that he was a ticking time bomb, and sure enough he pulls one of the biggest boners of the tournament with that handball. And speaking of coaches, surely Van Basten is done for, leaving van Nistelrooy on the bench was a career ender.

High drama and great entertainment but at times not much to do with football. Portugal look pretty decent though even with 9 men on the pitch. Miguel was outstanding.
I'm glad it's Portugal next because if England lose it will be a fitting end to Sven's career (particularly as England have had a bit of a leg up tonight with the number of cards flourished and Ronaldo's injury). But if they win...

Paul Robinson was "cute", Ricardo is a "time waster". This is how they were described when receiving treatment after innocuous challenges. I wish pundits and fans would take their blinkers off, I really do.

I thought the Dutch got what they deserved. They began diving in the first minute & carried on till the 96th.
Such skill, but such a shite attitude to the sport.
With 2 Portugese red-carded and the possibility of Figo joining them for the head-but (the ref's yellow to him can't have been for a head-but ... so it CAN be overridden).
Add that to skippy's injury (I see he was in tears ... yet again. Soft git) and 6 or so on a yellow & fearing missing the semi if they get through ... plus, surely, a censure from FIFA for future conduct they will not be at their peak.
Only pity is that it didn't go to extra time ... theere would have been at least 2 more sendings-off.
We could get a draw out of this one !!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Fantastic entertainment. Not in the traditional sense of end to end football, but that game had the lot. The ref spoilt it a bit (well, when I say a bit, I mean completely) but let's not beat about the bush - it benefits England. We owe the Portugese a beating, and we aren't going to get a better chance with a 50% fit Ronaldo, no Deco, etc.
The ref was a superstar though - I was in stitches of laughter for the last 20 minutes as he lost control time, and time, and time again. Typical FIFA - appoint a total incompetent. He made his mark after 60 seconds, and that is where he went wrong. From that moment on there were always going to be some dismissals.

Yes, I didn't realize the ejected could sit together. In hockey that would end up in another war.Crouch > Davies wrote:Best image of last night?
van Bronkhorst and Deco, sat side by side, in their international shirts, pointing at the pitch and shaking their head. Hilarious.

I was under the impression that sent off people weren't allowed anywhere near the pitch and had to go and sit out of sight!!! Like when Lawrie Sanchez got sent from the dugout at that FA cup game and sky showed him going mental watching them score on the TV????Montreal Wanderer wrote:Yes, I didn't realize the ejected could sit together. But then when did that referee ever appear to look like he knew what he was doing!??
