Best and Worst Games.

Post by Bruce Rioja » Mon Jul 10, 2006 3:27 pm

As the Zidane debate rumbles on, I've been looking back on the events of the past month and have come up with what were for me the best and worst games of the tournament. As ever, I'm sure that opinion will be divided. So, for me;

The Best - Argentina 2 Mexico 1

I really felt for the Mexicans at the end of this one. It was one of those games where victory for one side was always going to be cruel on the other. It was however, in many ways fitting that the goal that should decide this fantastic end to end game should be a beauty. The chest and volley by Maxi Rodriguez in the first period of extra time made Joe Cole's look like a hopefull Sunday morning punt. The only downside to this game for me was that The Borg never really got going and furthermore, was at fault for Argentina's opener, allowing Crespo a free header.

The Worst - Switzerland 0 Ukraine 0

Absolutely terrible with neither side making even the slightest fist of it. I will always remember 26th June 2006 for one very special reason, it's the date of the first ever boring penalty shoot-out. As I said at the time, if you're going to play so as to take the game to penalties (As both sides were from early on) shouldn't you have practised them first? The Swiss had three attempts and missed them all, Schevchenko missed his, and eventually we were put out of our misery as the Ukrainians, you'd be forgiven for thinking begrudgingly, put three on target that the Swiss 'keeper couldn't be arsed getting in the way of.

I still say that the most boring game of football that I've ever seen in my entire life was us at home to Blackburn last season, but this dire episode gave it more than a run for it's money.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Best -
The final. Because I had Italy in the sweep at work

Worst-
England - Portugal. There's only so many times you can shout, "We're not going to win plying like this erikson you stupid f*cking c*ck" at the tv before it gets boring.
This is supposed to be a man's game but it's full of namby-pamby, wet yer pants, frilly knicker wearing pansies.

Using the laptop or just big-headed, Bruce? Actually I agree with your assessment. England and Portugal are not too great at penalties either when you look at the final game (even the miss was a good effort).
