it's not like they all eat at the 76oz steakhouse! We are fat, but the bigger problem is lack of excercise and riding around in cars at all times.

No, it's not burning off the calories you intake

Obviously both.

But you get the feeling larger Americans eat soooo many caleries they would have to run a marathon a day to burn the calories? Not that they could.

p.s. do you want fries with that?

which is eating too much, not the other way around. You can be sedentary and slim, you can be active and fat. If you eat too much, by definition you will get fat.

Eat too much and don't excersise at all and you'll get "very" fat. No need to go to America, just walk down Brackley Street in Farnworth on Saturday lunch time and you'llsee what I mean. All the Hamburger Queens on parade

It might be semantics, but suppose someone could be on a particularly high calorie diet, but doing tonnes and tonnes of exercise (boxers in training, for example). Now you wouldn't say that they are eating 'too much', because they are burning it off and training, etc.

If they continued in their calorific intake but ratcheted down their exercise, the amount they eat wouldn't have changed but their lifestyle would, so what was acceptable before is suddenly 'too much' despite being the same diet? It's the balance, and my personal reason why all these 'diets' in the magazines and newspapers don't work is because peopel simply want to stop eating and get themselves thin, whereas if their weight is fairly constant and they just did a bit more exercise it's a better way to lose weight/tone up. This is where I'm coming from when I say that 'eating too much' doesn't make you fat. If people got off their arses and walked a couple of miles a day then they could eat what they wanted to.

so you've proved my point- it's eating too much. If you don't exercise as much and eat the same you are "eating too much", it's quite straightforward.

Eating too much makes you fat - eating lots to supply your body with sufficient calories to carry out the work it does doesn't.

Eating more than you need (known technically as "too much") causes you to put on weight, specifically as fat

People who go on diets don't lose weight because of the following reasons..

1. lack of will power
2. badly thought out diet (the diet industry is full of cranks and people who just don't know what they are talking about. DR?? Gillian McKeith - Doctorate came with vouchers on Coco-pops)
3. physiological plateau in weight loss
4. insufficient exercise
5. psychological problems

people put on weight because....
1. they eat too much

All this - they should exercise more - now that they're fat yes that's part of the solution. But you get fat not because you aren't exercising but because you keep eating.

doesn't matter. Fatness comes through what you put in your gob. You'll notice people in comas don't get fat.

okay....they are fed enought to survive. I bet it's not fat-filled either. Nothing goes in their gob's.

but they still have an intake of calories and they don't exercise.

Your body will burn calories without you exercising - it's your Basal Metabolic Rate, in men it's around 2,000 calories. So you can sit on your ass all day and eat 2,000 calories and not gain a pound. Eat 2,000cal and do 500 calories of work, you'll lose weight. Eat 2,500 cal and do no work, you'll gain weight.

I'll say it one more time - you gain weight by eating more than you need. If you don't want to get fat, stop eating so much.
