Interesting to watch for a young sprog like myself, maybe some of you will remember it?

Aye, at the time I was made up their ground had burned down

Their supporters had tried to destroy ours 5 days before, so it seemed fair enough

By the time we got back from Cambridge - we'd won 3-2 - more detail came through

Tragic.

I'm uneasy about this. I remember watching it at a mates house and his dad saying 'bloody hooligans again' and me telling him he didn't know what he was talking about.

Turns out I was right.

A horrible spectacle to watch unfold.

That is absolutely horrific.

Less than two minutes from a small fire to the whole stand going up. I've never seen that footage before - I just remember the photgraphic stills on the news when it happened.

Dickhead away fans too.

Well, let's hope that whover started the fire can live with killing 54 people. The idiots who do such things are sick in the head.

Wasn't the fire caused by rubbish falling through cracks accumulating underneath the terraces, then being lit by something, probably a cigarette. I thought it was an accident that the fire went up as opposed to arson, though of course the stand was inherently unsafe (and due to be closed).

yes - build up of rubbish and and errant fag or match was what I recall as being the cause.

On that day I was working about a mile or so from the ground. I got a 'phone call from my (ex) wife, who said "Have you seen the news?" Then went on to tell me what was happening. I walked outside and looked over towards Valley Parade and my jaw dropped. The column of smoke must have been thousands of feet into the air. Only later did I learn how many people had died. It stunned the city for months afterwards.

On another note, I stopped going out boozing in the city for a few months. Why? Well every 10-15 minutes a bloke or two would come around with a bucket....for the Bradford fire appeal. I didn't mind the first couple of times but you felt under so much pressure to donate......

For some reason i'd never heard of that before, bloody hell that went up fast!

where did people die, were they working in the stand or something?

It looked like most people in the stand got out.

IIRC quite a few people ran to the exits at the back of the stand only to find the doors locked and chained up. They didn't make it. I just watched the video and I gotta say I'm sat here now with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. Strange how memories dim traumatic events from your mind.

I didn't know any of the victims. A lot of my friends did.

If it's the middle-aged guy you are talking about, no he died. You see that's what happens when people are in total shock.

T'was indeed a discarded cigarette in a plastic cup that fell onto piles of rubbish that had accumulated over the years under the stand.

50+ people died WB, mainly kids and the elderly for Christ's sake. I certainly don't think that that is quality, do you?

A lot of people spontaneously combusted, that's what happens when the human body gets to its combustion point. They literally exploded and died.

I remember talking to a guy who was there. He said the heat was that intense it melted the soles of his shoes, he was stood on the centre circle at the time. The fans were chanting because no one knew, or suspected that there had been any fatalities. It was very, very quick. As you can see from the video.

Zulu is correct he did die. I have no idea how old you are, so I shall assume you're a kid and don't know any better.

i dont know how old he was, and if he died then thats too bad. but why do you get so touchy? shit happens. Hurricane katrina was tradgic, but jokes along the lines of sky multiroom are doing a booming trade in new orleans, every house has sky in the bedroom, is still funny. chill out man.

ed. im sorry for the elderly and children who perished, my quality remark was at the fact that the fans were still singing as it went up. apologies for any offence caused. i am not a kid either btw.
